There are the commemorative or personal pieces which are always modeled after an ancestor. Made to be placed to protect a person or place. Then there is the ritualistic mask- the ones made in nature that were made before you found them. Finally there are the masks that you use to disguise yourself when stealing food from the neighbor in times of extreme hardship or to frighten the children into polite behavior and these have a handle. There is some superficial checking on the wood that in no way undermines the structural integrity of the piece. The artifact has a deep patina. Especially around the handle area.
