A fine Trobriand Island platter Trobriand Islands. East Papua New Guinea, Milne Bay Province Length: 20.5 inches. A fine Pre-WW2 food tray(almost certainly cleaned and polished later) The bowl shallow with incised patterning. Each end with stylized human faces and zoomorphs. Minor damage to the tip of one finial; could easily be toned in, but has left in that state to maintain its integrity. A rare and exceptional example. On a custom wood base with sleeved peg. Rare Trobriand Island Figurative Betel Nut Bowl Early 20th C Provenance Oceanic
This superb early 20th Century Betel Nut Bowl is supported by two pigmy figures set on a base. The carving originates from the Trobriand Islands located off Mainland New Guinea. It was used to hold betel nuts. A popular chewing(and spitting out) condiment for the islanders. This piece was collected by an Australian missionary Daisy Coultard sometime between 1923 and 1929 during which period she had lived in New Guinea. Ms. Coultard eventually returned home to 24 Patrick St. Launceston, Tasmania in Australia where she lived out the rest of her life. When she eventually died, this bowl passed down to her niece in Victoria. The bowl has a reddish-brown aged patina with some staining from past use as well as faint remnants of lime embedded in the carved designs. There are some age cracks on this piece. Notably one on the base and another on one ... moreside of the bowl itself. There is also a small missing section from the circumference of the base, exposing wood grain which has mellowed into a lovely aged patina. Other than these minor losses, the carving is structurally very stable. This piece offers a real opportunity to own an authentic. Old Oceanic piece with a known provenance. Height is 12 inches or 30 cm. Width of bowl in 6-3/4 inches or 17 cm. Description This vintage circa 1950-70's Oceanic tribal ethnic carved kwila wood bowl by the Massim tribal people of the Trobriand Island Papa New Guinea in Malaysia. Is of elongated ceremonial bowl form, cut from a single piece of hard wood. The rounded oval dished bowl is surrounded by a wide rim carved with typical Massim tribal like design. The conical underside of the bowl has an integral carved stand with birds neck like arms reaching out to support the end of the bowl with birds head shaped cut ends connecting with the rim. This is a beautiful original and old carving from Massim Island. Trobriand Islands in Papua New Guinea. It is 7 1/4" 18.4 cm) tall. There is a lovely patina to the wood- it has been much handled. The larger chipped area on the base looks like it has been intentionally made to fit it on the end of a pole- as there is a hole right above it. There are traces of red and blackish pigment. There are two'burn' marks creating"eyes" This is a heavy solid piece and weighs approx. 1.5 lbs and measures approx. 14" x 6.5" Heavy for it's size! I feel the condition is WONDERFUL considering time. Weather and usage/handling. There are very minor wood chips off the tips of the crab's legs and some minor weather related wood splits but all in all a very fine AND RARE piece of Tribal Art ... morefrom the Trobriand Islands in the Solomon Seas.
