We believe that the dagger is probably from Lou Island or Manus Island. Both of which are part of the Admiralty Islands which in turn is part of the Bismarck Archipelago of Papua New Guinea. The handle is made from a vegetal fibre(possibly coconut) covered with panarium nut paste. Incised with designs and painted with natural ochres. The blade is obsidian glass. The dagger is in rustic"tribal" condition. There are cracks appearing in the panarium paste covering along with some minor loss to the handle base as seen in the photos All photos are a significant part of the item description. Papua New Guinea. Sepik River Ceremonial Cassowary Bone Dagger This is a magnificent vintage mid-century ceremonial bone dagger from the Iatmul Tribe located in the Middle Sepik River area. PNG. The modeled head, with its shell eyes, is made from clay, assorted natural materials such as tree resin and pigments, cowry shells, cassowary bird feathers, and raffia twine. This has been placed upon a polished piece of leg bone from the cassowary bird, which is a sacred totem. It is in very good used condition given it's age and use. The clay head is solid and solidly attached to the bone. There is however some minor chipping around the ears where the raffia is attached. There is also a chip off the middle of the back of the head where a raffia string may have passed through a hole for the owner to wear the dagger like a talisman. A shiny material ... moreis present which may be some type of glue and a few feathers are missing, but all things considered, the piece is in very nice shape. See the photo details. Bone Dagger Clay Head Shaman Kamanabit Papua New Guinea Latmul Ceremonial Vintag
This piece is an estate sale find and I do not know its origin or age. Based on research and the tag it came with. It is likely from Papau New Guinea. Here is what I can tell you about the piece. There was a tag stuck up in the back of the dagger that says"Ceremonial bone-dagger Kamanabit. See last photo) The head appears to be made out of clay and it is painted with colors of gray. Black and pink at the mouth. Some of the pink at the mouth has flaked off and there is other vintage wear to the painted facial features. There are sea shells mounted in it for the eyes. And also along the top and the bottom of the head. There is one missing shell along the side of the head. See photo# 9) There are no chips or cracks in the dagger or the head. There is a small divet at the top of the nose. But it looks like it is a normal part of the piece. ... moreThere are thin feathers that have been plastered into the head and the entire head has been fashioned onto the bone dagger. Some of these thin feathers will have a bend. Possibly there are some missing. From the tip of the dagger to the top of the head. It measures 15-1/4" long. To the top of the feathers it measures 18" long. It is 4-3/4" wide from ear to ear. It is 2" deep from the tip of the nose to the back. It weighs 15 oz. I have not attempted to clean it in any fashion and have no intention of doing so. See photos provided for condition and appeal- feel free to ask questions. Vintage Clay Shaman Head Latmul Bone Dagger Kamanabit Papua New Guinea Primitive
This interesting piece is an estate sale find in good condition overall. The tag(last photo) stuck up in the back of the dagger indicates: Ceremonial bone-dagger Kamanabit. The head appears to be made out of clay and it is painted with colors of gray. Black and pink at the mouth. Some of the pink at the mouth has flaked off and there is other vintage wear to the painted facial features. There are sea shells mounted in it for the eyes. And also along the top and the bottom of the head. There is one missing shell along the side of the head. See photo# 9) There are no chips or cracks in the bone dagger or the head. There is a small divet at the top of the nose. But it looks like it is a normal part of the piece. There are thin feathers that have been plastered into the head. Some of these thin feathers will have a bend. From the tip of the dagger ... moreto the top of the head. It measures 15-1/4" long. To the top of the feathers it measures 18" long. It is 4-3/4" wide from ear to ear. It is 2" deep from the tip of the nose to the back. It weighs 15 oz. See photos provided for condition and appeal and feel free to ask questions.
