The ... morebow is thickest at the midsection and it tapers towards the tips. The tips have a tight cord winding to support the bow string which is not included. The bow is no longer flexible and there are no cracks visible on the surface. The four arrows are made out of cane and they appear to be a matched set. There is no fletching on any of the arrows. The barbed tips are made out of palm wood. The barbs are attached to the cane arrow shafts with a tight binding. The binding is loose on a single arrow. Because of it's length, it would be very difficult to ship this item overseas. You Are Bidding On A Dutch New Guinea Pygmy Bow With 3 Arrows. The bow is 42 5/8" 107 cm) long and is made of wood. Even the drawstring is made of vine or bamboo, the fishing arrow with four tips is 46" long, the tips are 5 1/4" long. The black tipped barbed arrow is 48" long with a 8 1/4" tip. The spear tipped arrow is also 48" long with a 9" tip. I picked this bow and arrow set up at a sale from a retired U.S. Marine Corsair pilot who had received them from a deceased soldiers widow, the gentleman told me that the widow had told him that her husband brought them home with him after World War 2 ended and that they were from a tribe of Pygmy's that were discovered by a patrol searching for the Japanese in Dutch New Guinea during the war. Never being one to shy away from an unusual item or a good story ... moreI purchased them. I did some searching on the web and on October 17, 1942 in an Australian newspaper called"The Canberra Times" there was a short article about a lost Pygmy tribe that was discovered by an Australian Army patrol, they were called the Moikodia or Moikodi and the tallest person in the tribe was 3 feet 2 inches tall. That is the only article or reference to the Moikodia tribe that I could find. I doubt that the old Marine had ever seen the article. On the box that they were stored in, it reads"Dutch New Guinea 1944 Bow& Arrows" and what looks like the name Paul E Glasson Maj C.E. the last name is faded and is not 100% readable it could be Glasgow or something else I am just not sure. I attempted to find some information on the Major but was not able to find any. So don't wait to bid because I hardly ever list anything twice and when this item is gone, it's gone. Up for auction is this very fine set of arrows and bow from mainland New Guinea. There are 10 arrows in all and 1 bow and also 1 spear. They recently came from a deceased estate. All were brought back from New Guinea by a returning Australian expat that worked there in the 1950's-60's. They have remained within the same family since that time. Most would date back to that period or earlier. The arrows are all different. Many have carvings and pigmentation on them. Original bindings. Incredible workmanship. One has a bone top. This collection was brought to the U.S. by a missionary named Harold Chalfant around 1948. And given to my mother. These artifacts are from the Wahgi Valley at an altitude of 5,000 feet. Mr. Chalfant lived with the savages for over a month. The collection consists of 27 bows, arrows and misc tribal artifacts. Chalfant also brought back four pictures of some of the natives who donated the collection and his original written description of the stone age men. Their cannibalism and warrior tendencies. This auction is for lot of 2 old/vintage fighting arrows from Western New Guinea/Irian Jaya. Not sure if they are from lowland or highland regions. Or both. Lot includes one arrow with two barbed prongs(unusual, most have 3 prongs) Prongs are barbed bamboo blades, bound with strips of cane. This arrow would have been used for birds and fruit bats. The other arrow is very long and features a long bamboo blade. The point is attached with a thick mass of woven natural fibers and pitch-covered cane strips. This arrow would have been used for medium-sized game up to wild boar size, probably with dogs(as well as for fighting) Plain shafts made from bamboo or cane. Measure 64"50" long with 7"11" points. This auction is for lot of 3 old/vintage fighting arrows from the Eastern Highlands area of Papua New Guinea. The local name for these barbed arrows is tatai. Shafts made from bamboo or cane with incised lines and other decorative elements. One of the points is made from blackpalm wood. The other two are made from hardwood. Barbs, grooves etc. to cause trauma. The thin hardwood tip is deeply grooved about 6" from tip so it would break off in the target. Bindings are cane, yellow orchid fiber, and plastic material from a feed sack or similar(last is unusual) Measure 47"38" long with 14"13" points. This is a collection of Huli Wigmen's fighting arrows acquired near Tari. Southern Highlands Province, Papua New Guinea. Tribal warfare is the means by which local disputes are settled when other compensation cannot be arranged. Live household pigs are preferred. Failing that large amounts of cash have also been known to change hands. Physical injury to persons, including rape and death are invariably paid back. Twenty years ago a life might have cost a hundred pigs or $20,000. Fighting between clans is the last resort but will continue until such time as both sides feel the scores have been evened.
