This is item BP1 in our inventory seen up to photo 10. An older collectable betel pounder set with a protective ancestor face carved on each side of the container. The 2 pieces are very old. Unique with a nice patina too, hand carved wood: The lime pounders and containers of the Trobriand Islands are among the most collectable carvings in Oceania. Lime spatulas. Pounder and receptacles are related to the betel nut chewing and are of great importance in the Massim area. Betel chewing is part of working in the gardens. Attending feasts, meeting friends, trade rituals, and making love for the people of East New Guinea and the Trobriands. A traditional part of a man's personal paraphernalia in New Guinea and the Trobriands was his lime container and the spatula for betel chewing. A custom practiced on social and ritual occasions. Three substances ... moreare actually chewed together: the nut of a palm. Which has a hot, acrid taste similar to nutmeg; the leaf, bean, or stem of the betel vine, which is a member of the pepper family; and slaked lime made from burned sea shells or coral or from mountain lime and kept in this container while not in use. Once chewed, the mixture becomes a mild stimulant said to reduce hunger, pain, create a sense of well being, and increase a person's capacity for work. The Massim district from which these lime spatulas originate consists of the southeastern tip of New Guinea. The Louisade Archipelago, the D'Entrecasteaux Islands, and the Trobriand Islands. There is much trade between the islands; both ceremonial trading, called hula in which shell-disc necklaces and shell armbands are exchanged. And utilitarian, in which canoes, clay pots, wooden bowls, pigs, food, betel-nuts, and betel chewing utensils are traded. Betel chewing plays an important role in the hula. Lime spatulas are sometimes offered to get the trade partner to yield the desired hula item and the power of betel chewing is also used to influence trading. Description This vintage circa 1950-70's Oceanic tribal ethnic carved kwila wood bowl by the Massim tribal people of the Trobriand Island Papa New Guinea in Malaysia. Is of elongated ceremonial bowl form, cut from a single piece of hard wood. The rounded oval dished bowl is surrounded by a wide rim carved with typical Massim tribal like design. The conical underside of the bowl has an integral carved stand with birds neck like arms reaching out to support the end of the bowl with birds head shaped cut ends connecting with the rim. This gorgeous and rare form of bowl has good original polished finish, the wood has faded in colour and there are some minor patination marks and slight wear conducive with its age(please see photos) Length 46.8cm. 18& 7/16"width 21.2cm, 8& 11.32" height max approx 12.5cm, 4.29/32" unpacked ... moreweight 892 grams. This is a beautiful original and old carving from Massim Island. Trobriand Islands in Papua New Guinea. It is 7 1/4" 18.4 cm) tall. There is a lovely patina to the wood- it has been much handled. The larger chipped area on the base looks like it has been intentionally made to fit it on the end of a pole- as there is a hole right above it. There are traces of red and blackish pigment.
