Old Mask - Papua New Guinea - Mei Iatmul - Middle Sepik River Tribal Art Oceanic. Absolutely fantastic Iatmul Mei mask. I’m told the Iatmul tribe lives ... morein the middle Sepik River region. Likely a 60’s or 70’s mask. Made in the dugout style. It had/has heavy cowrie shell decoration with conus shell eyes. All natural dyes and adhesives are used. It’s missing a good deal of its cowrie shells but still looks amazing. This is a large mask at approximately 3 feet long, 7” wide, and 6” deep. Please examine photos carefully. Local Boston pickup only or possible delivery within 15 miles of Boston for a small fee. Thanks

The people of this region wear similar adornments to those along the Ramu River. This example is constructed from a perfect blend of bush and introduced materials. The shells on the example are old and in perfect condition, with a nice layer of encrusted patina. The piece is flanked by one red and blue glass trade bead, and the two feather attachments are suspended on gold chain, which we think is a lovely touch.
