The old shallow bowls that are sometimes found in the Boiken area of North East New Guinea where we located this one rarely have motifs and carved designs but this one does. And when motifs are present, the underside alone is carved with abstract curvilinear designs that are clan related in the form of a flying fox for example. Designs. In relief, are always stylized. A nice old large sago bowl from papua new guinea. Sepik region. used to put sago in it with certain ceremonies. The bowl is made of 1 piece of wood and on both sides its decorated with crocodile- dog heads. with the typical sepik mouths and noses. The bowl is quite large. 32 inches, and collected in the late 60,s or early 70,s by a dutch man who worked there. It still has a crusty layer of sago remains inside. Its a nice old and used piece. The spoon has some minor wear throughout, a loss and break to the bowl(I have one of the bowls pieces) and some damage to the end of the handle. Being offered is a nice old antique mortar wood bowl of unknown exact origin but I suspect it is somewhere within the Papua New Guinea sphere. This bowl is 7" high and measures 4 1/2" across the rim of the bowl. The heavy dense wood shows a lot of wear around the base with some chips and abrasions but all happened a long time ago because these areas have developed a patina. The mortar has been carved with an interesting scene all around. You have a large bulbous nose person with some type of earring ornament with robust body and legs. Next to that is an odd animal looking human/creature hybrid but with rear covering skirt. Next to that is a figure with elaborate mask with sharp teeth and extended tail piece to the mask. It's long arm is carrying a paddle. Next to that is another odd creature/human hybrid with erect phallus. ... moreIt finishes with another odd creature/human hybrid with very long arms and some type of club.
