This old spirit board is made from a light weight wood. A carved face with nashing teeth. Raised nose, eyes, and an elongated body are carved in relief, together with the decorative edge designs. Collected by geologist Ed Grewar in the late 1960's from the Papuan Gulf. These ancestral boards were first carved to contain and control the dangerous spirits of certain powerful ancestors. The deeply carved designs and stylised face of this board are highlighted with red and white ochres. The rear has light fire charring. With collection numbers A776 wrote on the top section. Peter was stationed near Rabaul in East New Britain from 1961 onwards and was the Officer in Charge of Wood Utilisation and Marketing at the Papua New Guinea Forest Products Research Centre from 1965-1981. During his time in New Guinea he amassed a substantial collection of Gulf art. The surface of this board has an ancestral face and traditional designs deeply carved. Large New Guinea Warrior Tribal Gope Board
Rare Papua New Guinea warrior tribal Gope Board. Natural pigments. One owner for over 40 years. Acquired in Manhattan. 62" tall x 12" wide. Very special piece of history Gope Boards are wooden ritual objects made in the Papuan Gulf of New Guinea. They represent spirits which can protect clans from sickness. Evil spirits, and death. Small unnamed gope boards are often given to uninitiated boys, and a full size board is made by the uncle of a boy for his initiation ceremony. Also, warriors are awarded gope boards for each act of bravery they perform in battle(often made out of the enemies canoe) These gope boards vary in size, but can be up to six feet long and have a consistent elliptical shape. They are carved in relief and then painted with lime(white) and red ochre and other native paints. Most gope boards have a similar style ... moreand depict the face of an ancestral spirit. Gope boards are also used in raids on other clans and headhunting missions. Check the sample of plates: you will see a large selection of different pre-vailala madness(in 1930 a very large amount of artifacts and men's house were destroyed in a frenzy cargo cult) artifacts, tablets, boards, shields, Marupais(carved dwarf coconuts used in sorcery rituals) combs, ceremonial spoons. Do you know another publication with four full plates dedicated to Marupais, and four others dedicated to bullroarers? As a collector, I think it is pretty important to be able to distinguish between pre and post 1930 papuan gulf art. It is also quite pleasant to recognize at first sight a Purari delta or a Kerema artifact. Here, you have a perfect collection of guaranteed pre-1930 artifacts! Goaribari Island gope board
We know from Newton that Kerewa gope are usually carved from old canoe wood. Making it at times difficult to establish the age of a piece, aside perhaps from its stylistic cues. In this example we see areas of wear and patination along both edges of the board itself, indicating age and use after it was carved into this gope. The pigments are muted but with enough strength to interest, the white pigment washed away, allowing the yellow/ gold of the wood through, complimenting the red. The colors in this gope really work well together. There are biconical suspension holes top and bottom. While Kerewa gope are typically restricted stylistically, please note the interesting marginal motif of interrupted links and an overall balance of line and proportion. It is proposed that this is a second quarter, 20th century gope. Its condition is completely ... morestable with erosion at the open grain spaces at the top and bottom.
