Up for offer is a 19th/early 20th Century Tongan(from Tonga. Formally the Friendly Islands) north-east of New Zealand war(god? club. Intricately carved ... morewith geometric motifs. Just over 43"H. Quite heavy, perhaps made from iron wood, possibly"toa" Not sure if stone chisels were used, along with a shark-tooth tied to a wooden handle OR if iron tools were utilized for the carving. But the carving is rather intricate. I also don't know the exact name of the specific style of club this is as I know there's a heirarcy of designs and status. Good or bad, there's a"better/good" side and a not-so-nice side to the club which may involve some creative restoration altho the"good" side is certainly fine for display. There's also a drip of white paint- as seen in the photos- but I'm not going to dare to clean off. I will leave that to an expert to do. I took photos in different light conditions to try to show the fine carving as well as the'issues' I mentioned. Shipping to the US/Canada will range between $30-60+/ depending on final destination BUT I won't know for sure until end of auction. I only charge exact shipping cost! Low reserve. In the least this is a beautiful display item but I don't profess it to be museum quality BUT it does seem to be an older example for sure. I really have no idea how much this will cost to ship outside of North America. ALSO keep in mind some countries do not allow items of a certain length to be shipped so if you have any shipping questions, please get in touch sooner than later. On Apr-06-13 at 13:21:50 PDT. Seller added the following information: SHIPPING! I looked into international AIR MAIL shipping options and found a few examples. To the winning bidder- please wait for me to create an invoice as I'm only charging exact shipping cost. To the nearest $5 seeing I confirmed shipping costs today. Shipping to East Coat/NYC(USA) is $35 Shipping to West Coast/California(USA) will be $40/50 Shipping to France. Air mail i

A nineteenth century Polynesian stone-carved pole club, Fijian, maybe, or Cook Island, in a form that doesn't closely conform to any other Oceanic examples ... moreI've found. It has a square cross-section, serrated at the corners, 28 5/8 long. Total length is 33". The wood is a very dense open-pored hardwood. ANTIQUE WOODEN MAORI CARVING Polynesian Wakahuia Waka Huia Tribal New Zealand
ANTIQUE WOODEN MAORI CARVING Polynesian Wakahuia Waka Huia Tribal New Zealand Description: ANTIQUE WOODEN MAORI CARVING Polynesian W akahuia Waka Huia T his is a stunning antique carving. I believe it is a piece of Maori art and is perhaps a Waka Huia. Which I believe was a storage vessel for important items which was hung from the ceiling of a dwelling so that the underside could be seen. The vessel displays extremely fine carving and superb craftmanship. It is inset in a few places with shell discs and also has a few whisps of hair or fur. There is also a section of carving on the inside which has been filled with red pigment. A really facinating item. Condition: The item is showing signs of age and use and has a repair to one of the ends. There is also a small section of carving missing from another end. However. Still a lovely rare piece ... morewhich displays beautifully. Size: Approximately 24 inches long(60cm) Overseas buyers please note: this is a relatively large and heavy item so please take a note of the shipping costs. VERY RARE ANTIQUE POLYNESIAN DOLL - HAND MADE with JOINTED LIMBS and SHELL LEI
VERY RARE ANTIQUE POLYNESIAN DOLL- HAND MADE with JOINTED LIMBS and SHELL LEI, VERY RARE ANTIQUE POLYNESIAN DOLL- HAND MADE with JOINTED LIMBS and SHELL LEI This Very Rare Antique Polynesian Hand Painted& Jointed Composition Doll was made sometime around the early 1900s I was told. But there are no marks that I could find. She is 8 1/2 inches tall, her torso& head are all one piece so her head does not turn or move, but both arms& legs with the painted gold bands around the wrist& ankles are jointed& attached with wires so she can sit or stand& raise her arms. Originally there were the small metal buttons covering each joint, but she has lost 2 of the buttons, and her hand painted face looks a bit spooky, I would not call her a pretty doll by any means so most likely she is a folk art doll, her Missionary style dress ... moreis made of linen I believe and the lei of tiny shell around her neck is big enough to slip over her head if you were careful. The red paper lei on her head is losing flakes, she has a scrape on the tip of her nose, and her hair is a mess, but otherwise she is in pretty good shape for her age with no cracks, chips or damage to any of the paper mache body parts, the hole in her bottom was how she was put together- I hope no one takes offense at my showing it.
