Samoan Tongan War Club Antique Pacific Island Oceanic at least 100 yrs old
A very old original Samoan or Tongan wood club from the 1800's. It appears well used with some lime residue and indentations of possibly having been bound with coir coconut string on the handle. It addition. It appears well weathered as if it sat out in the sun and got wet over time. It has nice chip carving and is made of heavy dense wood. Its shape is characteristic of the intermingling of the cultures of Tonga and Samoa. The club is a little more than 31" long. The shape of the club looks really good on the wall. The knob on the end of the handle is characteristic of early clubs. I purchased this club from Allard Auctions in 2000. Fair for you fair for me. Email if you have questions. PS I'm selling some artefacts because we just bought a new house and we need the money.
Samoan War Club Nifo Oti Wood Sword Antique Vintage Pacific Island Oceanic NR
A Samoan ceremonial or war club from the 19th Century or turn of the Twentieth Centrury. 790 mm or 31" long. Many broken teeth but the club is made of heavy dense wood with a lot of characteristic Samoan chip carving. The club has good patina. It looks very substantial on the wall where I had it hung. I purchased this club in Wellington New Zealand in 1997 from an old estate. There is some writing on the butt of the club as shown in the photo but I cannot read it. I gaurentee this club is at least 100 years old if not 125 years old! Fair for you fair for me. Email me if you have questions.
Solomon Islands Wood Paddle War Club Antique Pacific Island Oceanic ex Tad Dale
Solomon Islands wood paddle war club from before the turn of the twentieth century. The carving and quality indicate it was made before or just after the arrival of europeans so I think it was made in the mid to late 1800's. I purchased this club from Tad Dale of the TAD Gallery in Santa Fe. New Mexico in 1998. Deep rich patina with signs of a lot of handling. This is the best balanced club I have ever owned.and I've owned a lot of clubs. In fact, if I had to choose one club for self defense, this would be it. The sides are relatively sharp and the club handles so well. The wood is dense and heavy. At the handle end are the characteristic nose and eyebrow design(possibly frigate bird wings) found in Solomon Islands art and a center ridge on each side. The only damage is a small broken off missing piece of wood along one edge of the ... moretip as can be seen in the last photo on the bottom. Club is 103 cm long or 40 1/2" Fair for you fair for me. Email if you have questions. I'm selling some artefacts now because we just bought a new house and we need the money.

A Massim New Guinea 19th Century War Club. Collected sometime between 1870 and 1906 by businessmen James Burns& Robert Philp of Burns. Philp and Co, probably in the mid 1880's or 1890's when they were leading excursion trips to New Guinea starting in 1884. There is good patina and signs of much handling. 29" long and made of heavy black palm wood. I purchased this club in 1999 from the Dunbar Sloane Auction House in Wellington, New Zealand. Antique Oceanic Pacific Island Carving Adze Tonga New Guinea Fiji Samoa NR
Antique Oceanic Pacific Island Adze Artifact Tonga New Guinea Fiji Samoa. Very interesting steel bladed adze. When I bought this adze from Dunbar Sloane Auction House in Wellington. New Zealand in 1997, it was listed as being a gardening hoe from Tonga. I think actually it is a carving adze from Tonga Islands from before the turn of the 19th-20th century. It is 29" long. The white spots on the steel blade are paint spatter from the very old house where the artifact was displayed before going to auction. The spatter can be cleaned off but I never did it. The adze can be swung from the handle but there are handling marks up by the head of the adze from what I think occurred during more precise carving. The steel blade looks to be hand forged with a very unique shape. Email me if you have questions. The handle is so round and smooth, it ... morealmost seems as if it was made on a lathe. Of course it was hand carved.
Rare Antique Fijian War Club/ Fiji Islands 19th Century/ Oceanic-South Pacific
Antique Fijian War Club"Kiakavo Vividrasa" Fiji Islands- 19th Century ~ please scroll down for more photos ~ SIZE: Length- 35.5" Diameter of shaft- 2.25" DESCRIPTION: Fine old Fijian war club of the type known as"Kiakavo Vividrasa" and dating from the early to mid 19th century. This club is of traditional shape with splayed top. Knob-end handle, honey-brown patina, and especially noteworthy for it's decorated sinnet handle. The handle is wrapped with striped bands of braided plant fiber, braided plant fiber intertwined with red and green trade wool, and a shiny, very dark brown- black animal hair or hair-like plant fiber. There are also about 28 very tiny(1 mm) glass seed beads woven in towards the middle of the handle, some almost hidden by the braided cord. I don't know the significance of these beads. ... moreThe club shows much wear from tribal use and has a fine old patina. It is made of a very hard and heavy wood and is relatively thick. Unlike the later 19th century and 20th century examples. AGE: Early to mid 19th century. CONDITION: Good ethnographically-used condition. As shown in the photos and with the following noted: Small scratches and wear over all. Small, very old and worn down chips to the knob handle. Some areas of loss and fraying of the sinnet braided decoration, mostly on one side(the side that does not have many beads) Small thin craze lines to the wood, from age, at the head of the club. There are no cracks or losses to the exposed wood of the club head or handle. HISTORY: Purchased from an old collection of ethnographic items on the American east coast. No other collection history available. PLEASE NOTE: The low opening bid. With no reserve, is not meant to reflect upon the actual monetary value of the piece. Oceanic Wood War Club Tonga Samoa Vintage Polynesia Antique Hawaii Pacific
This Oceanic club is probably from Samoa. Tonga or possibly another Polynesian island. I cannot determine its origin but the coir(coconut rope) binding is identical to what is found on Samoan clubs. Also, the head is carved like an octagon which is also similar to Samoan or Tongan clubs. The length is 16 1/2" I bought it from the estate of a deceased woman in California, I have no other history. The patina is fine on the wood and the coir binding is very well done. The wood type is unknown but is not especially heavy. In my opinion it is either a discipline club for misbehaving wives or children or it is a show club. Email me if you have questions.
