The Ambusap is often known as a bridal cap. The same headdress can also be worn by men in the course of certain rituals. In that context. Disguised as a bride, they represent an ancestress. Iatmul Mei Mask - New Guinea 1965-75
This classic mei mask comes from the Iatmul People of New Guinea. It represents a stylised male ancestor and has the typical long nose that terminates at the bottom in a birds head and is decorated with mud shells pigments and tuks. There appears to be a repair to the nose near the septum and also near the bird- I have showed close ups as it looks like an old repair. There is also some loss to shells and the tuks is broken. It was collected by Klaus Pinker a German born architect and actor working in New Guinea from 1965-75. Klaus acted in the Australian TV series'Homicide' and'Hunter' in the early 1960's and was well known in New Guinea establishing his own theatre company in Port Moresby. It measures 54cm in length. This old Iatmul Suspension Spirit Hook is 25 inches long. The hook part at the bottom is 7 inches wide. He has lots of personality and interesting carved designs. I do not know the exact age of this carving but it is not new. Lots of surface wear and scratches give the carving a beautiful old patina. His eyes are inserted parts of shells. On offer is an item from the Iatmul area in the Middle Sepik region of New Guinea. It is an Iatmul ceremonial bone dagger which has a clay head painted with clan designs. I purchased it as part of Lot#357 on the 19th February 1996 at the now defunct Lawsons Auctions in Sydney. It is a clay head modeled over the handle of a cassowary bone dagger and has Cowrie shells inlaid as eyes and Nassa shells inlaid at the top of the head. There is fibre in the ears and nose and the face is painted with red. Black and white ochre. Length: 34cm. Width: 11.5cm. As a face mask at the bottom with a crocodile skin pointy hat, and as a crocodile tail as the kite’s tail morphs into Tantimi) Kanda, who is represented twice, as a full figure and as a head opposite of Tamtimi’s head at the bottom, representing good and evil on each side, eventually Kanda gave birth to a pair of Brahimney kites called Mamanarliger and Kanganarn. On her back here, you see Kanganarn. The story from where some of these characters are drawn often refers to secret tales only known by the tribal elders. AN EXCEPTIONAL FLUTE STOPPER FROM THE IATMUL REGION OF PAPUA NEW GUINEA. This finely carved flute stopper was stored in the rafters of the former men's house in the village of Yenchenmangua and purchased there during a 1989 Sepik River expedition. With cowrie shell eyes. This male ancestral representation plays a flute that evolves from his nose and extends to his groin- a traditional representation of renewing male spirit. This sculpture has a stable crack on the back of his head. Some other stable minor cracks, and five very small insect holes- none of which detract from his noble visage. H: 24 in.61cm Mounted on a custom base. This is from a private West Coast Oceanic art collection.
