Antique cowrie shell Papua New Guinea ceremonial dance necklace/chest ornament. From the Sepik River area. Abalone Kina Shell Mother of Pearl Necklace Papua New Guinea Tribal
This is a Kina Shell with high polish and a balanced crescent shape. It is smooth and has a substantial feel. Weighing 7.1 ounces. Kina Shell is the mother of pearl or abalone carved from a single large shell, and was used for trade and ceremonies by tribes in Papua New Guinea. While many Kina Shells were made into necklaces, some were valued for trade. This piece does not have holes drilled for a necklace, although it could still be converted. It measures 7 1/2" wide at widest point, and 6 3/8" high. The opening is too narrow to be a collar-style necklace, except perhaps on a young person. The color on this piece is shaded dark on the topside, which seems to vary in light, as shown in photos, which is a pretty effect. The underside is the classic mother-of-pearl white-rainbow sheen. This piece has no edge chips, no cracks, no breaks. ... moreIt has a few small pits on the surface, which would be normal for a natural piece like this. This piece came from the living estate of a world traveler with a national news organization. She had many works of art and traditional tribal artifacts. Her home had a warm. Peaceful, positive feel which many people attending the sale commented on. This piece was found in her jewelry box. We feel it's likely this piece is fairly valuable, but we are starting it quite reasonably and will let our buyers decide what it's worth. It is an unusual piece, and we're pleased to be able to offer this for sale. Thank you for looking. Please feel free to ask questions. Shipping is by Priority. In order to assure tracking. Thank you!

Old Papua New Guinea Kina Shell, Golden Edged Clam, Bridal Money Necklace
Beautiful Old Kina Shell. Also known as"Golden-Edged Clam" Shell. Used as currency in Paupa New Guinea, especially valued as a wedding gift from a husband to his new bride. Shows a rich patina of use, and was probably part of a bridal ceremony, and a treasured possession of a Papua New Guinea native. This dates back to at least the 1950s, and is quite possibly older. Measures 7.5" wide by 4.5" tall. About 1/4" thick at the top, tapering down to a very thin bottom edge. It has some minor scratches. And a couple of chips on the thin lower edge. One of the holes is broken out, as shown in the photos.
