Bilum Bag Papua New Guinea/Infant Carrier
This unique Bilium Bag from Papua New Guinea was made as an infant carrier. Many mothers in PNG use this type of bag either worn to the front for breastfeeding/carrying. Tied across chest and worn on the back or tied and worn around front of forehead with infant on back. Mother's being hand-free is very important very everyday activities. This bilium bag has animal fur(I don't remember what type animal) woven in with it. It was presented for the birth of upcoming baby. Here is a little bit more information on the bilium bags of PNG: The ethnic origin of the word bilum is unclear even though it is thought to be a Melanesian word. It is defined in‘The Jacaranda Dictionary and Grammar of Melanesian Pidgin’ by Fr Frank Mihalic s.v.d as a carry-all by women throughout Papua New Guinea. In some areas. The net or woven string, is used as ... moreclothing thus the expression Meri i pasim bilum. Bilum is also defined as the womb. The placenta, or the pouch of a marsupial such as a wallaby. Shipping to USA only. Postage cost will include insurance.

Vintage Papua New Guinea Wood Hornbill Bird Figure w/woven Bilum String Bag
This is the second wonderful Papua New Guinea artifact that I am posting this week. Have a look also at my'Standing Male Figure' Here we have a carved wooden Hornbill with pigment and inset bone details in the eye sockets. There are some condition issues but that is to be expected in an authentic artifact that carries considerable age. There is a crack that runs vertically along the left side of the body and the tip of the bill has been repaired/re-attached by a previous owner. I've owned this piece since he early'70's(bought in Cairns Australia) and aside from displaying it prominently in my home have done nothing to it. Measures 26" 66 cm in height. Pigments. Derived from various amalgams of charcoal, lime, ground earth, plants, burnt shells and minerals mixed with tree sap, water and clay have been applied overall. ... moreThe use of colour is an important aspect of Middle and Upper Sepik River art(The Sepik River Basin being a region of PNG noted for its production of artifacts) It's believed that colouring a carving will increase the power associated with it and carvings are often decorated and re-decorated before important ceremonies. Am including with this bird a loosely woven string bag. Known throughout PNG as a'bilum' bought at the same time. Mid 20th century or earlier. Similar examples seen recently in the collection of Oceanic artifacts in the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia, in Vancouver B.C. Bilums are made throughout PNG. Traditionally. As in this example they were made with plant fibres, usinga process known as'looping' or'knotless netting. Many villagers are now finding it easier to use store bought wool and cotton and so the natural examples are relatively rare. Small. Light, strong and woven of indigenous plant fibres this example would have been tucked into a waistband and brought into the jungle to carry any fruit, birds eggs, small animals etc. collected there. Has a handle of wrapped fibres. Measures roughly 9" x 9&
Papua New Guinea Oceanic Tribal Art Decorative Handmade Seed Bag with Strap
Rare and hard to find. Handmade, seed bag from Papua New Guinea. This decorative piece has an intense crisscross pattern using two different colors and shapes. Purchased in Rabaul. PNG, from the local artist at her home in 2008. This intricate bag is a unique example of local craftspeople making goods with pride to allow them self-sufficiency in providing for their own livelihood. It is in excellent condition and is sturdy enough to use. It would also make a great wall hanging. It measures 5 3/4" long by 6 1/2" wide. The double seeded strap is 3/4" wide and 20" long. This bag would display great in any Oceanic or ethnographic art collection. dhep.RcmdId ViewItemDescV4,RlogId p4%60bo7%60jtb9%3Fuk%601d72f%2Bishm%3Ed%7Fhep-146b3c1cdfc-0x114-

Large ANTIQUE hand woven BILUM BAG from PAPUA NEW GUINEA
My husband and I collected this bag over 25 years on the Sepik River in Papua New Guinea. Is probably from mid 20th century. It is hand woven of cotton cord and animal fur and very skillfully knotted. Larger than many of the bilums we saw: 19 inches across at the bottom of the bag. 14 inches. From the bottom to the top of bag. And then another 13 inches above the top of the bag for the handle. Suggested use: very colorful wall decoration. Would also be useful as a handbag. There are a few loose knots; see last photo.
