It has a ... moreround head that becomes slightly elliptical in cross-section as it moves toward the shaft, below which is a 5" long, slightly elliptical, scratch-roughened gripping surface, with an almost-oval elliptical shape, thusly (), for the remainder of the shaft. It measures 29 5/8" long by 1 3/4" in diameter at the fattest point of the head. The wood is a very dense closed-pore hardwood similar to that found in identified Aboriginal clubs and boomerangs I have owned. It has an old, appealing, untouched surface, with much of the marks left by the stone carving process remaining. There are a few tight age cracks, but no other condition issues.

Rare Hand Crafted Nulla Nulla(Aboriginal Throwing Stick or Club) Created from and Pecked into Native Wood by an Australia Aboriginal Craftsman at the Yalata Mission of Southern Australia or Possibly at La Perouse* Circa: 1930s 20 1/2 inches(52 cm) long x 4 inches(10 cm) wide and 1 1/4 inch(3.2 cm) deep Condition: Very Good: This club shows some wear and may have been used for hunting or as a toy. Description; The club has excellent form and sensitive carving. The design was pecked into the wood. This method of decoration was used on throwing sticks. Boomerangs, shields and other native tools in the 1930s. They were offered to travelers and tourists as decorative items. This was encouraged by the monks of South Australian Missions so as to generate cash for the local native population. An example of this type of artifact is in the Powerhouse ... moremuseum in Sydney, Australia. The item was found in a San Francisco Bay Area estate. In the early 20 th century with very few other means of income and provision. The Aboriginal community of La Perouse was quick to engage with the new developing tourism market. They sold shell artifacts, shields, boomerangs and other items, and demonstrated boomerang throwing to the day trippers. What developed was a“transitional” culture' of production with traditional skills being employed to alter traditional objects for the new market. The production of souvenirs, such as decorated boomerangs, nulla nullas and shields grew in the 20th century with the establishment of a tram line to La Perouse in 1902, making the La Perouse Indigenous community one of the first to be involved with the tourism industry. Large Original Antique Aboriginal Non Returning Boomerang/Hand Hunting Club Due to the size and shape of this Boomerang it would suggest that it is from the men of the Inland Plains/Desert Regions. It also has a distinctive red hue from the remains of the red ochre it would have been decorated in as well as the carved patternation to the upper side, all consistent with aboriginal tools from this region. I have dated the piece in the 1850-1899 bracket but this item could be much older) These were an all in one tool. Used for cooking, digging, throwing, hunting as well as in rituals and ceremonies. Absolutely fantastic patternation to the upper side which shows a mass of carved striations. Really wonderful patina overall, real good visible marks of the stone/chip worked process that it took to make this piece, this can be seen to the underside ... moreand to where the boomerang would have been held(which fit's the hand perfectly) This is not the prettiest Antique boomerang you will see. This is an Australian Aboriginal Woomera. It is a lovely piece. It does have damage on the handle with a crack and a bit of splinter on one side. But my gosh. This is a true used item from way back! See photos carefully! This is lovely with one incised side. That in my understanding tells of who it originally belonged to by the pattern. It is reddish in color as is necessary for this piece due to the dye rubbed into the spear thrower to create that type of patina. I really hate to part with this one! Antique vintage ostrich feather fans Maori Aboriginal leather work handmade
A pair of large round ostrich feather fans with leather work tribal art. I think these come from New Zealand or Australia- may be from another pacific island. I purchased these about 5 years ago from the house of a retired British Diplomat who was based in New Zealand in 1940s/50s. He thought these were probably made as tourist souvenirs in 1920s. There are two fans- they are very similar but not identical. The handles are rolled pieces of leather around a wooden frame. The centre of the fans are leather with cut pieces of different coloured leather edged with leather threads sewn to form leaf shapes. Around this is band of white leather. And around this a circle of coloured wool, and finally the outer circles of black, brown and white ostrich feathers. On the back there is a central circle of coloured leather panels with sections cut out ... moreand fine leather strips forming a star shape. Each fan measures approx 32 inches from top to base of handle. The diameter is approx 26 inches from side to side. Condition- in very good condition- there are one or two cracked feather stems and some very minor spots on the leather handles- but nothing serious. The main feathers are in good condition and not shedding or damaged. Super tribal art fans- great for collectors or for display- have been hung on a wall and look amazing. ANTIQUE. UNUSAL ORIGINAL AUSTRALIAN ABORIGINAL PARRYING SHIELD Early 20th Century, from the Central Region of Australia dimensions are: 28 1/4" tall; 4 1/4" wide. Max; 2" thick. Max. Weight ~1 3/4 lbs. History: Part of a dealer's private collection for last 43 years; Obtained from an anthropologist in Melbourne. Australia in 1971; Anthropologist collected shield in the field from an Aboriginal in the Alice Springs area of Central Australia c. 1950; Notes stated the shield had been in the family for several generations; Description: The wooden shield has a beautiful patina and is finished in red ochre using natural desert clay for color- no artificial color or paint was used; The shield is carved from Beanwood. A soft wood, apparently using stone and perhaps metal tools(no modern tool marks are apparent) The shield is strongly ... moreincised on the front and lightly on the back(primarily texturing marks with two bands above and below the handle) The front carvings are in three sections: the top third has a vertical zig- zag path through mound-like structures(possibly intended as a map) the central portion consists of straight and wavy horizontal lines with a couple of mound figures(perhaps representing water) the bottom third has a very pretty vertical lines contrasting with short horizontal or angled lines forming a 3-dimensional motif. There are some natural cracks in the wood. One in the center appears to have bee repaired with pitch by the native owner; There is a chip at the bottom that appears more recent. Background: Shields such as this were used for both fighting and ceremonial purposes; A little known use was as camouflage while hunting- the dull. Fluted. Red ochre finish deliberately mimicked the red sand of the desert. Crouching behind the shield could hide the hunter from view and conceal his approach. SPECS. Size: 28 1/4" tall; 4 1/4" wide. OLD ANTIQUE CHERT AXE AUSTRALIAN ABORIGINAL PAPUA NEW GUINEA TRIBAL NO SWORD
Being offered is a nice old antique chert axe the most probably originates from the Australian Aboriginal people but also possibly from Papua New Guinea. The axe measures 19 1/2" in total length with a 4" long chert stone blade that is also 1 1/2" wide. The wood handle is chip carved so completely made without the use of tools. There is a lot of blackish patina deep in the recesses of the chip carving so this could very well be a 19th century or earlier item. The chert is inserted directly into the wood handle. You can barely make out the resin fill to hold it. The chert holds tightly. An interesting tribal object that required a lot of skill to make. Please e-mail with any questions. Very old antique ethnic Australian aboriginal boomerang - hundreds of years old
This is an opportunity to own a really early piece of Australian Aboriginal history. It is really primitive and crudely made with what would appear to be stone tools. It is irregular in shape with gouges and scrape marks all over it. It really tells a story. It looks like it has made plenty of kills and brought the dinner home many times. It has lots of wear and a fabulous patina. I love this but unfortunately have to sell. I have included many photos that will hopefully enable you to form your own opinions of this great item.

Antique Australian Oceanic Art Aboriginal Parrying S hield This auction is for a delightful antique Aboriginal Parrying shield. Carved from dense Mulga Wood. The front hand carvings show Kangaroos. Emus and Spinifex grass all set in a foliage edge board. The back again has foliage motifs with a wonderful rustic deep chiselled carry handle. This antique piece has a beautiful tactile patina with natural wood shrinkage cracks and tree knots. It is of the Yalata Mission near the border of South and West Australia. The community consists mainly of Anangu who lived in the spinifex country far to the north around Ooldea prior to their forcible removal to Yalata in 1952. In the 1950s areas around Maralinga and Emu were used for atomic testing by the British Government of the day. Print size is 14 1/2 inches x 10 3/4 inches This is an amazing print showing the roughness of life in Australia as an aboriginal. H. R. Schinz(1777-1861) was a Swiss Zoologist. He studied medicine and was a"Professor fur"Naturgeschicte" in the newly established University of Zurich. As a professor he specialized in mammals and birds.

ANTIQUE ABORIGINAL WOODEN CARVING, FLAT TURTLE ?
I have 3 of these old wooden hand carved items up for auction. They have come out of an attic clearance so I don't really know a lot about them apart fro what I can actually see! This item looks aboriginal but maybe Moari? Some kind of animal but no idea what? Guessing some kind of flat turtle? It measures approx 39 cm long and 16cm wide. No idea what kind of work has been used? There is a little damage to some of its little feet. But would think that was a long time ago! Apologies but also have no idea of its age. The house clearance was for a very old lady whoses family had done a lot of travelling around the world, so I really don't know if it's 20, 50 or 100 years old! We have owned this item for many years but remember the gentleman that sold it claims that he found it in the outback after a grader was resurfacing a road. We believe his story is indeed correct and that this is a very early item. What is evident is that this was never finished as a boomerang. It is however a documentary piece that gives us a clue what the intermediate steps were involved in its design and a boomerangs design. The end has a broken piece and quite possibly the reason why it was discarded. It is in untouched as found condition. Perhaps worthy of a museum. Antique Australian Aboriginal/Aborigine Hunting-Fighting Boomerang
Antique Aboriginal Hunting Boomerang This great condition boomerang was brought over to the United States by my late Australian parents in the late 1940s or early 1950s(they went back and forth until finally getting permanent resident status in the late 50s) My father was a WWII war correspondent. Artist, and reporter back in those days, and was a leading voice in American-Australian relations at the time, so we have quite a bit of Australiana in their estate(and other countries as well from his 60+ countries of travel as a correspondent and lecturer) This is one of several boomerangs they always had around the house from before I was born in 1960. It is likely mulga wood. And designed for hunting/fighting going by the design(weighted more on the decorated end) Carved stripes on the heavier side. There is one chip on the rear from where it ... morewould have struck something when thrown(not visible on the front, but kind of a cool story for when you want to take it down to show someone and speculate about the target! Being offered is a massive and very heavy war club most probably from Australia. This club measures 21" in total length and has a circumference of 9 1/2" at it's roundest point. The club is a light brown wood that is very dense and heavy. The wood has a lovely stripy and banded grain and the club overall has a lovely mellow patina. FANTASTIC OLD ANTIQUE TRIBAL ABORIGINAL NATIVE AMERICAN STONE HEADED AXE CLUB
Being offered is a very fine old antique tribal war club or stone headed axe. I am unsure as to the exact origin but I lean mostly towards this being an Aboriginal stone headed club from Australia but I wouldn't rule out a Native American origin for this stone headed club. The club measures 18 1/2" in total length. The amount of stone protruding is 2" and the total width of the club head is 5 1/2" This item has the appearance of being very old. The handle is chip carved and is of a rock hard wood. Almost like petrified wood. It is super hard and it has developed a wonderful deep blackish patina that is only obtained over very long periods of use and time. The shape of the handle particularly towards the lower end of the handle reminds me very much of Native American gunstock clubs. The shape of the stone and head in General ... morereminds me of stone headed objects from the Aboriginal tribes of Australia. The stone head is secured to the shaft via some type of plant fiber.
