RARE OLD DAYAK BLOWGUN SPEAR FROM BORNEO NO KERIS DAGGER MANDAU SWORD
Being offered is a nice old antique Borneo blowgun spear. It measures 76 1/2" in total length and the blade at top is 6" The shaft is a black hardwood with the entire center channeled out bottom to top. A dart could be positioned and then shot from the shaft. The blade is recessed at the top. In other words it isn't fitted to the center of the pole but rather to the back of the pole and then wrapped in rattan. The rattan wrap is very nicely done. Nice old sumpitan. The piece shows nice old patina. Probably dates to the turn of the century to early 20th century. This spear is the bottom spear pictured in the grouping of 3 spears. Dayak Mandau Sword w/ original Scabbard. Antique 19th Century Sword is 24-1/2" long. Scabbard is 28" long. Rare piece from Borneo. Deer antler horn. Intricately carved handle. Fine metal braiding over base of handle. Original beaded band on end of scabbard, will not take plastic off as there are some loose beads. Scabbard(sheath) holds sword in place but there is some damage to the bottom seam and you can see some metal from the blade when sword is in scabbard. Due to the intricacy of the carving this was likely owned by a tribal leader. Simpler carvings were for ordinary men of the tribe. The Dayak's were headhunters. T he mandau is the traditional weapon of the Dayak of Kalimantan. Indonesia. The majority of the native people living in the island of Kalimantan(Indonesian Borneo) the Dayak, were fierce headhunters whose tribal art, including wood carving, architecture, beadwork and extraordinary trophy skulls. The mandau was imbued with magical properties and was believed to grow more powerful as it absorbed the courage and strength of each victim as it was passed through the generations. This made it a very important cultural object and integral part of ceremony and tribal rituals. This item is 19th– early 20th century. 19″ iron blade. Concave left side with top bevel and slightly convex face to the right. Low angular profile tip. Being offered is an interesting Dyak Mandau type sword from the regions of Borneo. This is a later example. Dating around the third quarter of the 20th century. It has a nicely carved wood handle in a zoomorphic style. The blade has interesting chiseling to the spine and also near the forte. The blade is covered in a light layer of red rust and this needs to be cleaned off. The scabbard is wood with floral and geometric carvings to the front. Please e-mail with any questions. Mandau Dayak Borneo Kalimantan Parang Sword Head Hunter Machete
OLD MANDAU SWORD INDONESIA SWORD DAYAK BORNEO. This sword was acquired form the village of Apo Kayan, Kalimantan, Borneo in 1990. It's measure a total of 26" The main sheath is in very good condition. The back sheath shows wear on the top and bottom as can be sean in the pictures. There is a crack in the very top of the main sheath, the piece that that holds the front and back of the sheath together at the very top. There is no rust on either the main blade or the small skinning blade. Both are very sharp and show no damage. I have looked over this sword and sheath and did not find any damage except what I have mentioned. Let me know if you need more picture or info. Unmessed around with. I got these items as a'by-catch' of a large auctionlot(and am collecting'igorot'items myself) Am not sure which tribe it is; Maguindanao, Sulu, Visayas? Surely an early piece I estimate at around 1915 or probably earlier. Handle has beautiful patine of much use and handling and on the sheath there have been added 2 more aluminium bands beside the older original iron topband. Therefore we can date this Chiefs piece at 1915 or more likely prior. Sheath also has its nice brownish hue deu to its high age and use. Some layering in the iron visible(see pics) INCLUDING the nice iron prof. STAND in which keris n sheath ... morecan stand next and can easily be taken out for study. Condition; excellent. SUPERB OLD ANTIQUE 19TH CENTURY DAYAK DYAK MANDAU PARANG IHLAND SWORD BORNEO
Being offered is a very nice old antique Mandau sword or Parang Ihlang from the Dyak peoples of Borneo. Beautifully carved hilt with a lovely yellowish patina. Very fine heads and other detailed carvings are featured on this hilt. The hilt in very good condition with a couple of age lines that are not separated but give plenty of character. The handle has a very fine rattan wrap around the handle. It is missing its resin ball at the end of the handle. This sword measures 25 1/2" when measured in its scabbard. The blade is a great fighting one. Flat on one side and bulging on the opposite side. Still sharp and there is some pitting on the flat side of the blade and some speckled pitting on the opposite side. The scabbard has a nice dark patina. There is remnants of the belt loop and this is being held on with some metal wire but this ... morecould easily be removed if desired. The scabbard features some nice carving as well. A really special and exotic sword that I have owned for 40+ years. Bought this from a vet's widow around 1973. Her husband vet had brought it home in 1945. She thought it was Japanese! Believe it is from the South Pacific- Borneo or Malay- Very nicely painted scabbard and has all those teeth- not sure if bear? or what but lots of them and horn handle all painted. bottom of scabbard has remains of hide& fur. Also has the smaller knife w/bone or hone handle that fits in side pocket of scabbard. Overall length when sheathed is 3ft + or 91.5cm. Probably one-of-a-kind as all hand painted.Carved, etc. Owned it a long time but at 72 I may be passing it on to the next caretaker.
