Here is an interesting old piece of tribal art! This is a piece that we rescued out of a dumpster a few years ago when a couple in their 90's moved from their home into an assisted living facility. The couple had traveled extensively back in the 1930s and 40s and we feel that this is probably something that they picked up on their travels during that time. Our research indicates that this piece was made by the master carvers in the middle Sepik River region of Papua New Guinea. He stands an impressive 39" tall and is made of one solid piece of wood. His eyes are made of shells. And on the"hook" part are white stones or shells. Although he's a bit dusty looking. He has no breakage, mildew, or repairs. A Carved wood hook figure or Yipwon. Trace pigment, Papau New Guinea. Approximately 18 inches long. A unique and authentic piece of tribal art from a remarkably remote island. Kept within the men's ceremonial house. The distinctive hook figures(yipwon) played a central role in hunting and warfare. Depicting powerful spirits, the images served as vessels into which the spirits were called before a hunt or raid and presented with offerings. The yipwon then went forth during the night to slay the souls of the game or human enemies, enabling the men to easily kill the actual animals or enemies the following day. If a yipwon was successful, the men showed their gratitude by offering it a portion of the game or smearing it with the victims' blood. If it failed, the figure was neglected or discarded. Yipwon images portray both external and ... moreinternal features of the spirits. Although highly stylized, the head and single leg appear relatively naturalistic in comparison with the central section of the body, which consists of a series of opposed, concentric hooks depicting the ribs, surrounding a central element representing the heart. The figure measures app. 28" in length and it retains the original vegetable material nose tie and decorations. The figure is carved semi round with a crocodile spine on the back side and features carved designs on the belly as well as painted elements in dark red. White and ochre. The surface is excellent with a great old dark patina that is very pleasing. The painted designs have typical loss and wear as should be expected. There are also some losses to the figures nose and ears and belly carvings as should be expected. Early to mid 20th century Papua New Guinea suspension hook from the Sepik River region. Shows a nice brown/black patina of age with wear and some aging separation at the back of the figure. A well developed male figure carved with powerful shoulders, torso and strong, slightly flexed legs. Ovoid head displays engaging eyes that spiral out to end below the nose. There is an old chip with loss at the right eye. He stands upon a heavier style plain hook. At the back of the head is a substantially carved, protruding handle style hanger. This is aN original tribal piece! The hook shows wear consistent. Dates to the 1930's and presents an ashy brown patina measuring 31 inches tall and is 6 inches wide. Suspension hooks were in use to dry and preserve meats and fish. The hook is carved in a male elongated body featuring a bird headdress ad includes some red and white pigments from the original paint.
