antique old 1800s Bontoc Austronesian Igorot tribal headhunters SHIELD artifact
Appears to be a genuine Igorot or Bortoc headhunters shield from the 1800s. I would say the condition is fair. Fully functional but does have a few cracks in the wood one crack is several inches long and may have been stained as I can see a few runs on the back side. Also has had a little bit of small worm holes. The worm holes are very small in diameter and are mostly only on the side edges. Has a lizard carved on the front. I've only seen one of these that has a lizard on it online and I think it sold for $3600. Please let me know if you have any info on this as I have not had it appraised YET but I hope to very soon! Rare early 20th century(Fikum or Tikam) Bontoc status symbol waist ornament The Fikum or Tikam is a large engraved gold lipped oyster shell worn somewhere at the waist. In front or one of the sides by upper class men of the head hunting Bontoc tribe of the Northern Luzon, Philippines. The shell was decorated around the edge with incised geometric designs reminiscent of textile and tattoo patterns. Like the stunning shell necklace of the Ifugao's in Mayaoyao this is its counterpart- a high status symbol ornament which is only owned by a few men of the Bontoc tribe and usually reserved for special occasions.
