Measures approximately 35" x 64". Entire, not cut down, margins somewhat frayed as shown. Early to mid-twentieth century is my estimate. Bold pattern ... morefreehand painted in still bright color tones above. Lower zone an intricate pen-work design in crisp detail. Entirely traditional wrap-around garment for men dancers, called salatasi. Rather rare, especially old ones like this. Material is thin, fragile and somewhat brittle. Of exceptional artistic beauty, would be a stunning wall hanging for den or library. Guaranteed authentic. Will be shipped USPS Ground Advantage. Comes as originally folded.

Set of 5 Vintage Fiji Hawaiian Bark Tapa Cloth Mats - Polynesian Ethnic Art Lot
Set of 5 Vintage Fiji Hawaiian Bark Tapa Cloth- Polynesian Abstract Art Lot This No Reserve auction is for a hard to find set of 5 vintage hand made tapa bark cloth mats. These Polynesian tapa cloth mats were handmade from the bark of mulberry trees& hand painted. I know tapa cloth has been made for centuries in the Pacific Islands& I am not knowledgeable enough about this art to pinpoint the age or exact origin of these tapa cloth mats. Each mat has a different traditional abstract design. In shades of brown& black. They are all roughly the same size, ranging from the largest, which measures 21" by 12.5" to the smallest: 18" by 12" The condition of these pieces is good to very good. I found two with very slight holes in the thinnest areas of the cloth. Shown in last 2 photos. With a penny for size reference. ... moreThere are no tears. A few brownish spots which appear to be original& not due to use or wear. There are no signatures or writing on the backs. These would make a beautiful grouping of wall art or save them for rare special occasions& use them as very elegant original art placemats on your dining room table. Good luck& see my other auctions for more great deals on ethnic art.

Estate find. So I know nothing about the age and origin of this piece. This one has some holes and I've tried to show them in the pictures. If you're using this as a wall-covering, it would be pretty simple to patch or repair or disguise these. It appears to have been stored folded for a while, so there are visible creases and some of the bark paper sheets are slightly separating(see pictures) but would be easily repaired with glue. I'm not doing this repair because it will ship with its original folds and that would stress the repairs. I have a few of these in different sizes- almost enough for a whole room. Dear oxford11mary, This isn't Hawaiian. It's Tongan. This is a piece of tapa cloth, made from the bark of the paper mulberry tree. Every Polynesian island group has a distinctive style of tapa cloth, which enables it to be identified as to where it was made. This one is easy to identify. The words(which I can't see) usually are the Tongan motto: Ko’e otua mo Tonga Ko Hoku Tofia’ This translates roughly as"God and Tonga are my heritage" In some cases. Large Samoan Siapo Tapa Bark Cloth Rare Exc. 75” x 48”, vivid color, beautiful
Large Samoan Siapo Tapa Bark Cloth Rare Exc. 75” x 48” Nominal measurements 75” X 48” Copied from Siapo.com Siapo. Also known as tapa, is one of the oldest Samoan cultural art forms. For centuries Siapo has been passed from generation to generation. Even so, it has fast become a nearly extinct art form. Siapo is not only a decorative art, it is a symbol of Samoan culture. It's uses include clothing, burial shrouds, bed covers, ceremonial garments and much more. There are two forms of Siapo, Siapo'Elei(The Rubbing Method) and Siapo Mamanu(The Freehand Method) The preparation process involved in the materials used to create Siapo is an art itself. The canvas of Siapo is the bark of the Paper Mulberry Tree. This cloth is known as u'a. The process of preparing the u'a includes harvesting. Stripping, separating, scraping and beating. ... moreIdeally the paper mulberry tree stalk is harvested when it is about ten to fourteen months old or approximately one to two inches in diameter. The bark is then stripped and separated with a sharp knife. Once the outer bark is removed, the bast or inner part is placed in a bowl of fresh clean water to keep it moist. The next step is scraping, which removes the remaining bits of bark and green growth from the bast and softens and spreads the fibers. To insure proper scraping, three different clam shells are used. Each shell has a different degree of courseness. The three types of clam shells are pipi, pae, and'asi. A wooden beater know as an i'e and a wooden anvil known as tutua are used in the beating process. The i'e is square in shape with two smooth sides and two grooved sides. These tools help to widen the u'a while it is beaten. The tutua is a single solid log cut about three feet long to be used by one person, or six feet long to be used by two or three people when beating the u'a. The top is eight inches wide and flat, with slightly rounded edges. Once the process is complete, the u'a is laid out to dry. The dyes used in Samoan Siapo also come
