Item Description While starting bids may vary I ALWAYS POST WITH NO RESERVE! Up for auction is a very detailed& gorgeous Cobalt Blue Glass Dresser or Powder Jar. This is not a small patch box ~ I would call this a"small-medium" size jar. It has a beautiful floral enamel decoration on the lid with gold accent and beaded flower design surrounding the lid and the jar. There is slight age wear to the gold and some rubbing in places. The floral and scroll enamel designs are in good shape with very little loss. The flowers are white and pink and heavily done so there is texture to them. Only one thin flake chip to the lid rim. See photo six. Barely noticeable with the lid in place. No other chips, cracks or damage to the jar. Though it is not marked, I think this is a Czech/Bohemian jar and most likely made c. late 1800's early ... more1900's. There is a delicate painting of a plump little cherub ~ the detail is amazing! I do think that there was likely a very detailed scroll type design inside the open blue area on the lid but it is all worn away now. I say this because as you inspect it very closely you can see a few wavy lines at the very edges. There are a few very shallow marks in the glass here and there which look like tiny popped bubbles and you will see one on the lid. The jar opens and closes easily with a snap. All the hardware is secure ... moreto the jar and the hinge intact. There is light wear to the bottom underneath from moving around on surfaces. There are no chips. Cracks or repairs to the jar. It is most likely c. late 1800's and again in a very typical Czech/Bohemian style but I have also seen some Italian Glass with similar designs as well. It is 2 3/4 inches tall to the top of the domed lid and it is 4 1/2 inches across at the widest part. Stunning multi-use box so popular with the Victorians who displayed them on their dressers and in their vitrines and curio cabinets. They were made in many different sizes and a virtual rainbow of colored glass(ruby. Emerald, topaz, amethyst, cobalt, aqua. Etc. This one is a stunning cobalt blue in the desirable diminutive size which is h and enameled with raised or impasto flowers. Magnificent coloration when held up to the light. Hinged lid with S-shaped clasp which functions perfectly. Opens smoothly and closes with that great sharp click we always look for. Gilt metal mounts have dulled slightly with age but still maintain a golden appearance. Although the“S” clasp itself is somewhat darker. No chips or cracks or nibbling to glass. Only age appropriate shelf wear to bottom. Enameling appears nearly 100% intact. With only slight fading/ ... morerubbing to the painted gold accent leaves. Which is a common occurrence on these boxes. As the gold metallic is fired at a lower temperature than the regular enamel paints. Victorian cobalt blue lidded jar with cameo encased in metal work antique
It is a lidded glass jar with a cameo on the lid. About 3-4 inches tall. Cobalt blue glass is pretty thick. Looks like a mold mark on the bottom. I don't see any makers make on it. The lid has holes in it through the metal work. So maybe it is a spice jar of some sort. Really nice condition. Don't see any damage. Believe the metal work is brass, for it has green in a couple small spots. Looks Victorian. you be the judge. Let me know if you have a guess. thanks for looking.
