John Hays, and Martha Willoughby all agree on one thing, history sells. And their point was well proven on Friday, January19, when Christie's offered its sale of Important American Furniture, Silver, Prints, Folk Art and Decorative Arts. Old surfaces and American history reigned at this sale, Martha Willoughby, head of the American Decorative Arts department, said. With circular molded and scalloped edge top, rested on cabriole legs with foliate carving and ball and claw feet fitted with castors. ANTIQUE HARP 400 Plus years old for museum collection
I have fitted strings for show only and guessed at the number and placement of them. 10 for treble and 8 for bass. There are extra holes and pegs where various users have changed the string arrangements over the years. There are some chalk marks inside the sound chamber which seem to coincide with where the strings should be.The back of the sound chamber which is open is polished and worn where it would have rubbed against the players clothes. Some of the pegs were missing when I bought this instrument(about 30 years ago) and I made some rough copies to make up the numbers. There was a wide crack running almost the full length of the sound chamber near where the strings go. I restored the crack and it is still visible if examined closely. On the top of the sound chamber at the front there is a bronze( shield with three scimitars and at the ... moreback some pewter. As far as the history of this harp is concerned the person I bought it from. An antique dealer in Bermondsey antique market told me that he had bought a lovely 16th century fireplace which had been taken out from where it was used circa 1920 and stored. The person who sold it to the antique dealer said that when it was removed(the fireplace) there was what appeared to be a hiding hole or cavity behind it with this harp standing upright in it. The antique dealer was told that the harp was to go with the fireplace although the dealer was reluctant to take it. I bought the harp immediately and was not interested in the fireplace! This is all I know of the history of the harp. When I acquired the harp it was just dusty and had probably been played around with by someone because it had a few rusty steel guitar strings fitted. Around 20 years ago I decided to sell the harp and was negotiating with someone on behalf of the National Museum in Dublin. They decided to get the opinion of an expert in USA who turned out to be ignorant and made a judgement on the basis of sight of a photograph and pronounced it a fake! I still have his letter. VINTAGE WICKER BABY CRIB Antique Wicker crib excellent for doll display This crib has been in my wife's family since it was purchased. It was passed around from baby to baby over the years and we have now run out of relatives having babies. We are downsizing and no longer have room to store it. The crib and carriage are both solid and in excellent shape. There isn't any damage to the carriage. Crib or the wicker on the crib. There is some loss of paint along the edges at the very bottom of the crib which is not very bad and I have not attemped to touch up. I will leave that to the new owner. The carriage is very solid and there isn't any other loss of paint on it. The canopy does have some wicker damage on the one corner which I have tried to show in picture#8. Included are a pair of Hot and Cold faucet knobs with some original hardware. 1 toothbrush holder for 4 brushes, 1 pair of towel rod holders( rectangular) 1 pair of towel rod holders(round) 2 small hooks and 2 long"J" shaped hooks. The Hot and Cold faucet knobs are approximately 4" square, the rectangular towel rod holders are 4" long with a base of 2"x2 1/2" the short hooks( toilet paper hooks) are are approximately 3 3/4" long with a 1 3/4" base, the long"J' hooks are are approximately 4 1/4" long and 2 1/2" wide, and the toothbrush holder is approximately 4 1/2" wide and 1 1/2" deep, the round rod holders are approximately 3 1/2" long and a diameter of 2 1/4" The only structural damge is ... morea repaired chip on the back of the Cold faucet knob. Natural dyes. Well drawn, wool pile, wool warp and cotton weft. Shows a close nap. Small areas of foundation, selvedge damage and slight losses to both ends. This rug is worth the restoration. EX JAMES OPIE COLLECTION: ANTIQUE ERSARI BESHIR(?) TURKOMAN WEDDING TRAPPING
ANTIQUE ERSARI BESHIR( TURKOMAN WEDDING CAMEL TRAPPING(Jollar) Central Asian tribal, Amu Darya river village settlements from southwest Turkmenistan toward northern Afghanistan, late century to circa 1900, and coming in very good overall original condition for the collector. The exact size is: 0'11" x 4'10" 28 x 147 cm) Provenance: Ex James Opie Collection. Long weavings, like this superb antique one, were created by the Ersari tribes and made for the bride's dowry. They were used to embellish the wedding caravan and draped as"trappings" over the lead camel carrying the young bride riding in her covered"kibitka" during the wedding procession taking her from her parents clan to that of her new husband. These types never had a backing on them to be used as storage containers like many torbas and mafrash ... morebags. After the wedding these trappings(jollars" were used as decorative wall hangings inside the newlyweds' yurt. This wedding trapping would have had long, multi-colored, fringes hanging down from the bottom at one point in time. Looking closely, there are a row of knots from these fringe remnants all along the bottom. This weaving is all wool in construction with natural medium brow for the warps and dark brown for the wefts. There is a distinct possibility that the warps are came-hair, but I can not tell for sure. The pile is in allover excellent condition with a few very minor moth bites and slight abrasions from past ethnographic age use. The exceptional component of this particularly lovely specimen is the lanolin-rich, silky-soft wool quality, placing it a league above the average of this type. I'd imagine that special spring-clip wool was gathered and saved by the women who created these dowry gifts and I can see why Mr. Opie had collected this particular specimen. The dyes seem to be all natural; the possible exception being the orange/red, located only in the field ornamentation, which has transferred a just bit on the reverse. The top and bottom end

RARE 1932 NEW YORK FARMERS ANTIQUE SILVER COLLECTION CATALOG - 1/85 copies
A Descriptive Catalogue of Various Pieces of Silver Plate Forming the Collection of the New York Farmers” Privately printed in 1932 by At the Sign of the Golden Head for the New York Farmers. Edition limited to 85 numbered copies. description continues below the picture- DISCUSSION: A fine example of one of the scarcest American silver collection books. Published to showcase the fine small collection of the New York Farmers benevolent club on the occasion of their 50th Anniversary. The idea to form a silver collection came at a club dinner in 1918. And a pair of candelabra, a tray and loving cup were subsequently purchased for $2,500. Club members were so pleased that they then voted to forgo flowers and table decorations at future dinners, and to put the unused $100 per dinner aside in a fund to pay for the silver. Additional pieces were ... moredonated from time to time, and by 1932 the Farmers had 16 fine pieces or sets, a mix of new and antique, including the pair of new candelabra by Dominick and Haff, a 1793 London flagon, a 1748 London tankard, an 1833 London waiter, an 1809 tureen by William Eley, several 19th century loving cups, a 1780 Newcastle goblet, and a set of 66 dinner plates made in London in 1773, 1800 and 1801. The story of the dinner plates is especially interesting- 48 of them were placed at the table for a December 20th, 1927 dinner, and it was announced that these plates had been presented by the King of England to the House of Commons in 1801. The estate of the Speaker of the House at that time had come up for sale and the plates were purchased in memory of former members of the Farmers, now deceased, and each plate would be inscribed in memory of a member, to be donated and paid for by a current member. Eighteen additional plates were later purchased and also donated. This finely printed catalog has fine full-page gravure plates.
