Elegant Antique English Cranberry To Clear Glass Biscuit Barrel or Jar c.1890
A wonderful Victorian biscuit or cookie box. Made from in elegant and highly collectible Cranberry glass graduating to clear down at the base, the underside having a star cut. The fittings and swing handle are silver plated, the underside of the lid marked EPNS for Electro-Plated Nickel Silver and the top of the lid decorated with a very pretty engraving. Excellent condition, the diameter at the widest measuring 5 3/4" the rim diameter surrounding the lid, measuring 4 1/8" 6 1/2" tall to top of finial and 7 3/4" tall to top of handle. Crystal stoppers, 2 small jars with lids, and a chrome color holder/stand with a center handle. The stand appears to be made of some grade of silver but I'm not sure what. I can find no maker's marks but perhaps I just don't know where to look. PLEASE NOTE: This set. With the stand/holder, is HEAVY and the shipping cost reflects this. The stand/holder measures approx 8-1/4 inches long. 6-1/4 inches wide and 8 inches tall. On the bottom, there are 5 screws. This jar has a 5" diameter and is made of cranberry glass with raised gold painted flowers and leaves. The attached handle and rim are silver with an intricate design. The removeable lid has a fancy finial. Inside there is a coin-shaped metal label with the manufacturer's name and USA Patented. The company is Simpson Hall Miller& Co. and it is numbered 542. Up for consideration is a lovely antique. Mary Gregory, hand-painted, Cranberry art glass powder jar in beautiful condition. This exquisite piece depicting a stag in the forest has copper metal details. It stands 2 1/2" and is 3 1/4" wide. There are no chips. Scratches or major defects. The copper hinge is partly torn on the inside of the jar.The bottom of the jar shows minor wear. Three of the decorative swirls to the right of the clasp in the middle of the jar are slightly darker than rest(see last photo) This is a piece I got from an estate in Northern California from a collector of fine glass and porcelain. I am not sure if this is French, or Bohemian, No makers mark that I can see. The bottom and sides are ground& polished, even the corners and all edges are beveled. I don't do a lot with glass, and not sure if my terminology is correct, but this glass looks to be in layers, with a thick layer of clear glass sandwiched between thin layers of Cranberry glass. If you view the pictures when I am holding it up to the light, I think you will see this. I don't know if this is cased glass? The box has a deep cranberry color to it. The top is thick beveled glass, has"Collingwood" etched on the underside. The box has ormolu brass hinge and clasp. The metal looks to have been gilt plated, but most of it has worn off. The glass is very nice quality, has a nice shine to it. The brass hinge has darkened to a warm brown color. Hinge is great condition, and the lid snaps shut just like it should. The box measures 2.5" across by 1.25" tall. There are some surface scratches, and one chip in the bevel of lid at about the 2 o'clock position. Please view pictures, I have marked with a arrow. This lovely box or jar measures approximately 2 1/8 inches high by about 3 inches widest point. The condition is as follows: Wear to the gilding. Tiny popped bubble to the inside rim of the lid and a tiny chip to the inside of the lid- can be felt with finger. Cannot be seen from the outside of the lid and barely seen when looking at the inside of the lid. These imperfections are mentioned for accuracy. Please look at all of the photos as they are a part of the description. I don't know the origin of this glass. But by the design it seems French to me. I have not seen anything else like it. There are no markings on it except the number"8" ... moreis painted on the inside of the top and also on the inside of the bottom piece. As you can see from the photos, the gold stars have almost completely worn off of the top but you can still see a shadow of them when you hold the glass to a certain light. Offered for your consideration is this lovely Victorian cranberry glass pickle castor insert. The jar has a slight bell shape with a panel optic design. It is decorated with very nice enamel work of gold leaves and scrolls and blue flowers. The insert measures 4 7/8" high. 3 1/8" across at the top, about 3 1/2" at the widest point and 3" at the base. A silver plated lid that fits nicely is included. This piece is in very good estate condition with no damage, significant wear or restoration found. It measures about 4-1/2" tall, by 2-1/2" in diameter at the rim, and is in very good condition, with no cracks and some minor roughness/chipping around the interior top rim. The glass is cranberry color decorated with lovely floral enamel work and a band of clear rigaree. My thought is that this bell-shaped piece was made in one of the Stourbridge factories in England at the end of the nineteenth century-any info appreciated. It measures 4 1/2" high to the rim. 2 1/2" across at the top, 3 1/2" at the widest point and 2 1/2" at the bottom base. This insert is in very good estate condition.
