Vintage 1908 adding machine made by The Calculator Corp. Grand Rapids. Mich. This machine consists of a flat steel baseplate with seven slotted brass discs mounted side by side. The discs are visible through cut-outs in the cover plate. The detail view shows the setting numbers around the outside of the cut-outs. The result numbers are stamped into the baseplate. And are visible through the single deep slot in each disc.Unit is in good shape except for one sliver of wood missing at left side. Original box is there but has come unglued. Please view photos for better description. To add. A stylus is inserted at the required setting number, and the disc is drawn clockwise to the stop at zero. Tens-carries are automatic, with the result appearing through the slots in the discs. There is no provision for subtraction. Victor Adding Machine made the first portable desk calculators. Between 1921 and 1925, Victor's annual sales jumped from less than $300,000 to nearly $2 million. From the 1920s through the 1960s, the adding machines were manufactured at its main plant at on North Rockwell Street in Chicago. Albert C. Buehler, a son of the founder, led Victor for many years. During World War II, when the company served as a military contractor, the number of workers at the North Rockwell plant increased from about 350 to 1,400. After the war, the company continued to grow. By 1968, Victor Comptometer owned 18 plants in the United States and Canada and employed about 8,000 people worldwide. In 1969, when Victor sold its electronics division to Nixdorf, a German company, it effectively abandoned the adding machine market. SUPER RARE VINTAGE 1960s COMPTA ADDING MACHINE FOR CASH REGISTER MADE IN NORWAY
Description This is a very rare adding machine and one that I have not come across at all in the past. My assumption. Based on what I've seen, is that this was not available or brought stateside all that much, and if it was, in very few numbers; or it could be that most didn't survive. This dates to around 1960-1964 and was made in Norway by the"Den Norske Stansefabrik" which translates roughly to"Norwegian Stamping Factory" and the model is called Compta. This is one of the earlier models which had a manual lever. Later models had an electric motor to perform that function of pulling the lever. Surprisingly, the machine is still functioning as intended with its internal mechanism chugging away at numbers. I've included some rare ads I found on a German website showing this very model advertised over a half ... morecentury ago. This is a must for any collector who wishes to add less-than-common and downright rare models. Its nice mid-century inspired color will also fit in with any 50s and early 60s type atmosphere. Condition This is obviously over half a century old but surprisingly it seems to work and chugg along just fine. The exterior is in good overall condition except for the lever which is a little corroded from storage and could use a good polishing or buffing. The mechanism. To the extent that I can inspect it, works as it should. I have not attempted to clean the insides for fear of damaging it, so I have left it as it is. A cover is included and appears to be original.
