Antique Fairbanks Scale 185? Iron & Brass Mercantile Platform & Scoop Countertop
Up for sale today is a very old E.T. Fairbanks Scale. I think it is a Store or Mercantile scale because it has both the platform and the scoop. The casting reads"E& T Fairbanks& Co. St. Johnsbury VT. Patented July 24 18? It looks like 1852 or 186? I can't make it out and don't want to do any more than to wipe it down. About 24" long and 13" wide at the platform. Overall width with the beam or balance is about 24" The scale is made of cast iron, except for the dual beams, which are brass. It has a holder for a scoop or pan at the top of the scale, kind of a combination platform/ scoop scale. Each Brass beam has a poise, it also has the capacity for a hanging weight at the end of the beam. The brass pieces have a slight bend to them, it looks like they could be straightened rather easily but I will leave ... morethat to the new owner. Antique WOOD Grain Scale& weights HIGH GRADE STANDARD MTGY WARD&CO CHICAGO IL This is a totally awesome Antique Head Unit for a Platform Wagon Farm/Hay/Grain Scale circa 1895-1910. We found a copy of the 1895 Montgomery Ward Co. catalog where scales like there were advertised on page 596. How it workd was the wagon full of hay. Or grain, or whatever, would be pulled over the platform in front of the scale, the scale would be weighed, and the empty weight of the wagon would be subtracted and then you knew how much"stuff" be it hay, grain, dirt, etc. was being carried away so you knew how much to charge. This was the"head unit" of the scale, set off to the side of the platform. This is indeed a very rare piece. Most of these were left out in the open so the wood became aged and the scales just weathered away. This ... moreone must have been out of the weather because the artwork on the front and back are still in outstanding condition. This piece is currently at the front of our shop and receives dozens of compliments from our customers on it each and every day. I know it will make a great"statement" advertising piece for any collector's collection. It stands 56" tall and is 43-1/2" wide and measures 11-1/2" from front to back. The brass and iron are in very good condition. it includes the iron hook to hang it with. 3 counter balance weights(2- 200 pound weights and 1-300 pound) And the iron stand for the counter weights. From my research, I believe this scale was made by either Fairbanks Co. or Gurneys and could date back as far as the late 1800's.but my best guess would be right around the late 1920's or early 1930's. Up for your bidding pleasure is an original green American Family 25 pound scale in working condition. As you can see from the photos it is off about a 1/2 pound but it does register the weight of things. I wouldn't use it for your baking projects but it is a very cool item for your kitchen. The face plate is in good condition with the American Family Scale still intact and readable. There is also a label on the side but it is not very legible. If I put it on 0, then the front weight has to be on about 4.4 in order for the scale to balance. If I put it off scale and around the corner at the far right end, then the scale works normally. I don't really understand what it is for, so any help would be appreciated. The back of the front beam is marked Pat. Jan. 12. 1886(my research indicates this was probably a patent for a Pivot Scale, no.334051 by J.S.Redline) There is a loop on the end of the front beam. I guess for hanging extra weights used to multiply the capacity of the scale. I don't know how that works and I didn't receive any extra weights with the scale. Heavy Cast Iron construction. Antique 125lb capacity Toledo Platform Scale. These scales originate back to 1897 and were produced until 1975. All of the parts appear to be original. The exact date of this particular piece is unknown however a very similar if not exact model was found on eBay and the listing reported this scale be from 1901. There is some rusting and other imperfections as depicted in the photos. The functionality of this piece is unknown at this time however we can say definitively that it needs calibrating. In the spirit of full disclosure we have to list this scale as currently not in working condition however that very well may not be the case.
