Hedman, a Chicago native with Swedish roots, borrowed $5,000 from his father to establish the Hedman Manufacturing Company. The firm was established to produce check protector machines that protect businesses from the common crime of forgery. Hedman's machine was the first check protector to write out the complete dollar amount with Arabic numerals in one simple operation. In addition, this first protector presented a patented process, engineered by Hedman, that printed the exact amount of the check by shredding and macerating indelible ink into the fibers of the paper. The results was a tamperproof document. Upon hearing about the Hedman Check Protector, Hedman's main competitor sent two men to attempt a buy out. This is a very rare find in deed. a Hedman F& E Series 950 Check Protector and Writer. It embosses great and comes with the original ink and spoon in the box. which fits under the item for safe storage. As you can see from the pictures the writer is in great condition still works well. the keys come with it but i was not able to figure out how to get it out. may be from sitting in it so long it may have to be removed professionally not sure. the box with spoon and ink is in the bottom of the check protector and is in great condition as shown in the pics. This is rare because you usually dont find the original box with ink and spoon with these items. It is a macerating check protector created to emboss the dollar amount on the paper check or any other document co that it cannot be altered. It is made of cast iron( looks like the finish is dark brown with some little discoloration on one side- see pic. 4) and still has almost all of gilded decorations on all the sides. Rare Antique F & E Hedman Check Protector 950 including Keys, Ink, Spoon
This is a Hedman 950 check protector that is in very nice shape. Operates and as can be seen in the pictures is complete in all respects as far as I can tell. Only damage of note is that the chrome bubble on the outer side of the handle has been dented and can be seen in the photo. Paint good except one small scratch 0n the handle side. Other than those items considering how these were used this is an very nice conditioned unit. Take a look at the print out provided. The original ink is still in the carrier under the unit and see the picture for the spoon as well they fit in the housing in the base. This unit still has the original inspection tag on the bottom as well as the label for the perforator on off switch.

You are bidding on an Antique Bank Check Protector made by the Defiance Machine Company of Rochester. New York. This vintage once common bank and office machine is marked“Baby Defiance. Pat. Applied For, Defiance Machine Co. Rochester. N.Y. U.S.A. in two places. One is on the nickel plated cover. And the other is on a small celluloid plate on the front of the housing body. The message that this machine will stamp on a check reads. NOT OVER FIVE DOLLARS” or what ever the dollar amount. You set the wheel on the right side to indicate the correct dollar amount. The dollar amount wheel is marked from $5.00 to $5000.00. The machine has an ink roller inside that rides against the message drum. The ink roller appears to be in good condition but is dry. We have not tried to apply ink. But it looks like it would still work. There is a tension adjusting ... morescrew on the front of the housing body that connects to the ink roller. The impression is made on the check by pushing down on the large button on the top of the machine. From research. We have found that this machine was patented in 1897. This antique machine still retains about 70% of the original finish that is a black color with spots of a copper color made to look almost like thumb prints. Overall this vintage bank machine is in good condition. It does show wear just in front of the nickel plated top cover. The bare steel is showing. And the nickel is worn on the stamp button on top. I had listed the other one last week but it didn't go with the cover. I now have the correct piece with the cover in this auction. It is a Baby Defiance ink embosser in excellent condition from the nickel finishes to the gold pin striping. While there is no name plate indicating“Baby Defiance” like the other specimen I currently have listed. It does clearly state that it is a“Baby” on the paper label. About 95% of the paper label is still intact on the metal base. It embosses: Not Over” in amounts from 5 to 5000 dollars. The ink roller is intact. Here is another offering from my personal collection that I am liquidating. This scarce check protector is an ink/embossing type which has double ink rollers surrounding the type head. The rollers are dry but intact. The final photo shows that the machine does emboss the paper for all characters and the paper advances automatically. As intended. The japanning and pinstriping are in excellent shape and the decal on the top is completely legible. So you get superb condition and functionality all rolled into one! This is one of many check protectors from my personal collection that I am liquidating on eBay. It's a Defiance ink embossing type machine made by the Defiance Machine Co. of Rochester. N.Y. It has cellulose like denomination ring about the dial. The stenciling on one side reflects patent dates from 1897-1904. The japanning and gold trip are in superb condition and the nickel plated surfaces are in excellent condition as well. The top of the plunger is made of an unknown spongy material which is intact but has a texture to the surface resembling orange peal. The ink roller is present and intact but dry. The embossing sample in the last photo. Therefore, is weak but it does imprint as designed. The complete instructions are on the base. It measures 5 1/8" wide. 4 1/2" deep and 7" tall. Antique Beebe Check Punch/Perforator/Protector Patents 1896-1897
This is one of many check perforators from my personal collection that I currently have listed on eBay. This particular piece is a Beebe which was patented in 1896-97(see 2nd photo for all of the dates. This style of perforator has a very unique perforation using a series of short lines rather than tiny holes as with so many others. The numerals in this machine punch visibly as seen in the final photo. When I first tested the function. The paper advancing wheels were working only sporadically. I lubricated the drive wheels with WD-40 and it seemed to work perfectly. The last photo reflects the spacing of the numbers after the fix. It has both of the adjustable paper depth gauges. The finish is the mottled red and burgundy which is typical of this company. The paint is over 90% intact but is a bit faded. The stenciling and decals are also ... moreintact but faded. The nickel plated surfaces are in good condition with some flaking on the upper knobs but very little rust. The retaining nut which secures the depression handle is a replacement. The machine measures 8 1/2" wide. 7 1/2 deep and 6 1/2" tall with shipping weight of approx. 14 pounds. If you do a Google search on this piece you will find specimens which have sold or are currently offered for sale for prices much higher than what I am asking. Antique Royal -Rouss Check Punch/Perforator/Protector (Number 3 of 3)
This is the third of three Royal Rouss check perforators from my personal collection that I currently have listed on eBay. This particular piece(the one in the right hand side of the first photo) Like the other two specimens, does not correctly advance the paper. It moves some but not consistently and with equal spacing. The numerals punch clearly as shown in the last photo. The Japanning and stenciling have flaking/chipping of the paint encompassing perhaps 20% of the surface. There is rust in many of the flakes. The plated crown of the piece is clean with almost no rust but with a dark patina. The machine measures just over 5" in diameter and slightly over 4" tall. This is one of three Royal Rouss check perforators from my personal collection that I currently have listed on eBay. This particular piece(the one on the left in the first photo) is the best cosmetically of the three with shiny plating. Paint, and stenciling. There are some tiny flakes in the paint here and there and there is one spot on the base where it appears a factory flaw was painted over. The functionality of this piece is mixed. The numerals punch cleanly but the paper does not advance. It appears that the lever which is supposed to engage the advance wheel is not working. Whether it can be repaired I cannot say. Antique "Peerless" Check Protector/Embosser/Writer *Updated Damage Description*
Please note change in description(in red) from my first listing of this piece. This is one of several check protectors from my personal collection that I currently have listed on eBay. It's a rather seldom seen"Peerless" check protector made by the Peerless Check Protecting Company of Rochester. N.Y. It is marked"Pat. Applied For" and bears serial No. A.12886. Advertising for this model has been identified as early as 1913. This is one of the more ornate styles for an embossing protector with a long bar with all of the numerals available. The machine does not work as offered as the selecting arm appears to be frozen in place and does not move from side to side. There is soldering on both sides of the handle below the name plate on the top rear where it appears the handled has been cracked or broken. Antique Peerless Junior Check Protector/Embosser/Writer
This is one of several check protectors from my personal collection that I currently have listed on eBay. It's a Peerless Junior manufactured by Peerless Check Protecting Company of Rochester N.Y. The name plate indicates it has been patented and has patents pending. Literature on the piece reflects it was first offered for sale about 1913. It is an embossing type check protector which has denominations from 1 to 90 going up by hundreds and thousands. The test I ran shows the characters and names imprint properly but the dual ink rollers are in need of refreshing. While the impressions are crisp. The paper does not advance. The advance wheels do not turn when the handle is depressed. Whether it is repairable I cannot say. It is also missing the pull knob on the front ink pad drawer. The serial number is 27761. Ill, the machine is marked Model D, No. 136376, and measures 5” x 7 ½” x 10” Has a front plate with“Insured against loss by and protected by Wm. J. Burns International Detective Agency” a nice historical feature. The machine is all in good condition, the levers all move freely but stiffly from lack of use, but all of them work, maybe could use a little bit of 3 and 1 oil, also has a spot of rust on the bottom(see photo) a nice old check machine for your collection, thank you for looking and for your interest. Antique Check Protector 1918-1924 Tod Protectograph
Check protector made by the Todd Protectograph Co. of Rochester NY. These were used by companies and banks to help prevent check fraud. The"Protectograph" embosses the amount on the check or other official document. Up until the 1960's check protectors were secure and difficult to purchase. However. Enough of them eventually entered the market that they became obsolete. Paint and nickle plating are both in very good condition. It could be polished and buffed to look almost new. But I chose to leave the patina intact. However, it has been gently cleaned. This unit has the hard to come by shelf on top of the body for storing checks.
