Howe Grain Scale/ Collector Antique scale ~1890 Brass
Antique grain scale. Not sure much on the specifics other than it was a hanging scale(hangers and even original beam included) It has the marking 189 all over and the maximum weight is either 8 or 12 thousand lbs. There is a patent date of 1890 inscribed clearly into the brass. I cannot find it anywhere on the internet so im starting the price low and no reserve. I have seen the more common 6k scale that is used for the same purpose in much worse condition sold for a much higher price. I have not interfered with the original condition what so ever as to not depreciate it. As you can see from the pictures minor oxidation is a factor but you can have that professionally removed and retirned to pristine condition w/little effort( look at the pictures) If you have any questions. Would like more pics, or even see it in person, don't hesitate. ... moreAlso as this probally weights 60-80lbs combined if you want it shipped we will have to work something out. LARGE VINTAGE HOWE / MEAD SCALE~??~~this thing is great~~~take a look
I normally don't deal is these types of things. But this was right out of an old barn and the owner said its been in there for decades if not a century, he was in his 80's. Anyway to start I couldn't be sure of the name. Its looks like it says MEAD in a triangle, made in usa. I did some research and there was a Dr. Mead who was Prs of Howe Scale co at the turn of the century, so this might be a Howe scale. this is all I know about it. Its a large scale and will weigh something up to 36lbs it says. Scale is 19" long, 12" wide and 10" tall to the top of the brackets that hold the pan. Its also very heavy. The pan which shows wear is 14"x 21" x 7" tall without the handle. The whole thing makes a statement. It also has two sliding weights on the arms. I assume it works but selling as is. Red paint shows ... morewear and has some chipping. I gotta figure this thing is about 100 years old. I'v searched ebay and didn't see anything like it, so you be the judge. Also the pan which has a handle that moves has no dents and does have some runt. Last pic shows little claw feet on the pan. Winning bidder to pay shipping& handling. If your not sure of something. Howe Brass and Cast Iron Scale w/ Slide Balance feed? wagon? pit? 1880's? big
Up for sale today is an old HOWE brand scale. Model#1398. Serial#1566141. I am sure that you folks who collect scales know a lot more about this then I do, I am guessing that it was attached by the chain to a platform, I remember as a kid there being one similar to this built into the dock of the feed store. I can unbolt this and package it up a lot smaller for shipping. Counterweight has the number LC54970 cast into it. The weight holder has the number B2554 cast into it. Comes with a 100lb. weight piece. It looks like a repaint. The board it is mounted to looks old. Please look at the pictures and ask questions, Scales are not my area of expertise but I will answer all questions as best I can. An Antique Howe Counter Top Platform Scale in very good condition considering the age and use. Green Color. Have no idea if that is the original color or this scale had been painted many many years ago. In working condition. comes with 5 assorted weights and the little hanger they set on. the top adjusting arm in brass. the scale platform measures 11 by 14 1/2 inches. and it stands 17 inches tall. The Fairbanks Scales of St. Johnsbury. Vermont and the Howe Scales of Rutland, Vermont seem to have no similarities other than being founded in tiny Vermont. It all started in 1855 at the Sampson Scale Company of Vergennes. Vermont. Employees Frank Strong and Thomas Ross developed and patented a new scale innovation that utilized ball bearings for the first time. This revolutionary design concept assured accuracy in weight measurement that had not previously been possible. Then in 1856 they built and patented a huge scale for measuring canal boats, another major innovation in scale design. In 1857 John Howe Jr of Brandon. Vermont ... morewas operating a foundry in Brandon and was approached by Strong and Ross to manufacture their scales at the Brandon foundry. He agreed and the three entered into a partnership calling their new company The Howe Scale Company. In 1864 Howe bought out his partners, including those early patents, and continued operations on his own. Up for your consideration. We have this VINTAGE Jacob Bros. RAILWAY EXPRESS Scale for HOWE SCALE CO. Rutland, VT. Believed to have been manufactured in the 1930's. This scale was used for weighing railroad packages. It is model#385S and will measure up to 60 lbs by 4 oz. Glass on both sides of scale are in tact and the front face looks quite good for it's age. The back dial face does have some minor shadowing but it does not affect the readability of the numbers or markings. The scale appears to be in working order without any breaks. I am not able to read the red painted label on the top of scale base and as you can see. This scale has a very nice petina to it. It is approximately 20" long and 11" tall. Weighing 17 1/2 pounds with a sturdy cast iron base. For your consideration are these three well-worn Price Catalogs. First is the Howe Scale Company of Rutland. VT price catalog from December, 1912. This one is 175 pages of everything from bench scales to Railroad Track scales. Second is a 246 page catalog from Howe's biggest competitor at the time, Fairbanks Scales of St. Johnsbury, VT. This one is copywrighted 1927. Third is a 128 page price catalog from the Standard Scale& Supply Co. of Pittsburgh, PA. This one's dated August, 1912. All three have some serious cover issues- they're all actually separated from the pages. But, th illustrations are all crisp and the pricing incredible! This large. Brass weighing pan came from an auction in Vermont. A magnet does not stick to the pan. Someone has written in marker Howe Scale Co Rutland, Vt on the inside of the pan. The Howe Scale Company opened it's doors in Rutland, Vermont in 1857. The pan measures 21 7/8" long, 11 1/2" wide at the top, and 6" high. There is some rust, some rough spots and some wear marks, along with tarnishing. It's a neat old, heavyduty, weighing pan. The pan weighs about 2 pounds.

Howe Scale used by Railway Express in Soledad CA, SPRR in the '60s
This scale has been in my family for many years. My dad used to work for the Southern Pacific Railroad as a station agent. He handled parcels shipped via Railway Express and this was the scale he used to weigh parcels weighing less than 55 pounds. When SP closed down the office where he worked in Soledad. CA, he was allowed to bring this scale home and keep it. That was back in the 70's. So this is an antique scale as it had been used many years before that. You can see the most recent calibration stickers on it verifying its accuracy. It is still accurate to this day. I have compared it against an electronic scale and it was right on the mark. There are two parts that have been replaced as shown in the photos. my accuracy test was made after these were replaced so they had no effect on its performance. You can see by the markings on ... morethe beam that the range is from 0 to 55 pounds. This would be a great addition to any collection or as wonderful conversation piece as a decorator item in any home. And. Of course, it is also functional. It is 22 inches tall. 18 inches from back to front, and 17 inches across the beam. Everything on it is in good working order. It has a patent date of Aug 17th 1873. In remarkable condition for its age. Perfect for a butchers shop. Deli or a vintage kitchen whether a display item for its aesthetic beauty or a fully functional novelty scale. The Howe scale dates from the year 1855. When F. M. STRONG and Thomas ROSS, began studying the problem of how to make a perfect weighing device. They succeeded and in 1856 they secured their first patent. Shortly afterwards they created their first scale in Vernon, N. Y. They finished and exhibited specimens of their hay scales and other smaller styles at the fair of the American Institute, in New York, where they attracted ... moremuch positive attention. In 1857 John Howe, jr. then of Brandon, Rutland county, became impressed with the value of the invention, purchased the patent of the inventors and began their manufacture at Brandon. Up for auction we have an antique Howe Scale Co. industrial wood and iron trolley. The Howe factory located in Rutland VT; had loading docks for the railroad. The trolley was probably used for moving supplies in the factory. And to the railroad cars. The cart has Howe Scale Co. stenciled on the front and the numbers 1-772 on both sides. Each iron wheel has the number 19 embossed. The cart measures 23 ¾” long 15 ¼” wide and 4 ¾” high. There are two bored holes in the center beam; most likely for a removable handle for pulling. The trolley is in its original condition no restorations. There is one washer and nut missing on an iron rod. The cart will be shipped FedEx ground. Platform marked 5059 Arm to balance marked 8103 Seems to work but sold as is as found with no returns Pat date is unreadable but looks like 1890 Serial number is 741553(although could have unreadable number in front of the 7) Has State of Indiana tested and seal tag coin attached 21" x 12" See photos We are liquidating our Uncle's estate and we are not experts on any of these items.
