Howe Grain Scale/ Collector Antique scale ~1890 Brass
Antique grain scale. Not sure much on the specifics other than it was a hanging scale(hangers and even original beam included) It has the marking 189 all over and the maximum weight is either 8 or 12 thousand lbs. There is a patent date of 1890 inscribed clearly into the brass. I cannot find it anywhere on the internet so im starting the price low and no reserve. I have seen the more common 6k scale that is used for the same purpose in much worse condition sold for a much higher price. I have not interfered with the original condition what so ever as to not depreciate it. As you can see from the pictures minor oxidation is a factor but you can have that professionally removed and retirned to pristine condition w/little effort( look at the pictures) If you have any questions. Would like more pics, or even see it in person, don't hesitate. ... moreAlso as this probally weights 60-80lbs combined if you want it shipped we will have to work something out. Have no idea if that is the original color or this scale had been painted many many years ago. In working condition. comes with 5 assorted weights and the little hanger they set on. the top adjusting arm in brass. the scale platform measures 11 by 14 1/2 inches. and it stands 17 inches tall. Antique Howe"Army-Navy" Scale. This scale was owned by one family for two generations. It was used in thier plumbing/mechanical business for a period of time then put in the rafters decades ago. The scale was last certified in 1954. The scale is in near perfect condition. One small hinge that secures the top opening flap needs adjustment. A red-arrow points to this hinge in picture#4. Howe Antique Brass & Iron Platform Beam Scale W/ Counter Weights
This is an old Howe beam scale serial number 414467. It was in a w arehouse with the platform in the floor. The brass and iron are in very good condition. it includes the iron hook to hang it with. 3 counter balance weights(2- 200 pound weights and 1-300 pound) And the iron stand for the counter weights. The counter weights on the beam are brass and move well and the beam lock is there and fun ctional. This can easily be hung up and displayed. This scale will ha ve to be shipped by UPS ground. Lg Antique Vtg 21" Brass Grain Tray Howe Scale Co Weighing Pan Scoop Scale Heavy
This large. Brass weighing pan came from an auction in Vermont. A magnet does not stick to the pan. Someone has written in marker Howe Scale Co Rutland, Vt on the inside of the pan. The Howe Scale Company opened it's doors in Rutland, Vermont in 1857. The pan measures 21 7/8" long, 11 1/2" wide at the top, and 6" high. There is some rust, some rough spots and some wear marks, along with tarnishing. It's a neat old, heavyduty, weighing pan. The pan weighs about 2 pounds.

Up for auction we have an antique Howe Scale Co. industrial wood and iron trolley. The Howe factory located in Rutland VT; had loading docks for the railroad. The trolley was probably used for moving supplies in the factory. And to the railroad cars. The cart has Howe Scale Co. stenciled on the front and the numbers 1-772 on both sides. Each iron wheel has the number 19 embossed. The cart measures 23 ¾” long 15 ¼” wide and 4 ¾” high. There are two bored holes in the center beam; most likely for a removable handle for pulling. The trolley is in its original condition no restorations. There is one washer and nut missing on an iron rod. The cart will be shipped FedEx ground. If I put it on 0, then the front weight has to be on about 4.4 in order for the scale to balance. If I put it off scale and around the corner at the far right end, then the scale works normally. I don't really understand what it is for, so any help would be appreciated. The back of the front beam is marked Pat. Jan. 12. 1886(my research indicates this was probably a patent for a Pivot Scale, no.334051 by J.S.Redline) There is a loop on the end of the front beam. I guess for hanging extra weights used to multiply the capacity of the scale. I don't know how that works and I didn't receive any extra weights with the scale. Heavy Cast Iron construction. Antique Cast Iron HOWE Grocer's Scale 100 lbs. pat.1886
This is an Antique Howe Scale. They were used in grocery stores. Feed and grain stores etc. The scale has a scoop on/off option that goes up to 20 lbs. and the main weight goes up to 80 pounds. It has a lock flap on the end of the arm that keeps the arm locked in place when not in use. The base and arms are cast iron with a brass arm number indicator. The base is marked with the makers name along with Rutland, VT. the place of manufacturing. The patent date is marked on the top arm, April 6, 1886 along with another pat. date on the scoop and another number, 486701. The base is 16" x 18" and the overall height is 28" with a 25"wide top. The makers name HOWE is on both sides of the name plate on top but it has mostly faded away. It is rusty and needs to be cleaned and refinished so that you can get the brightness back into ... morethe brass metal arm. Very collectible, possibly from the late 1800's. I found a picture of one similiar in the Vermont Scale Museum website in 2013. Beautiful balance scale. Has the number 3 on the front of it. On the back brass plate it says N.Y.C. APPD Type NO 17 Serial No W-2. The scale is about 9 inches tall with metal pan and 17 inches long. In picture 6 you can see the weight cup is off and a brass rod in its place because I wanted to set the scales at zero with the pan on it. The pan weighs about 9 oz. It can be changed back to original in a matter of seconds if you would like. The last picture shows a 1 lb weight in the pan and beam weight set on 16oz. It is accurate. Vintage HOWEPlatform Scale. Scale measures 24 1/2 inches long, 28 1/2 inches high and 17 inches deep. The cast number located on the top balance bracket is 7823, the number on the scale weighing table is 5193. The scale has two slide bars for measuring weight, the top slide bar measures from 0- 10 pounds in one ounce increments and the bottom slide bar measures weight from 0-40 pounds in half pound increments. There are 4 additional weights to be added to the end of the balance bar, they have the following information cast into them, 1/2 lb- 20, 5/8lb- 25, 1 lb- 40 and 2 1/2 lb- 100, which I believe are used to increase the weighing capicity of the scale Scale is in working order and in great shape. This is a very old Howe counter scale. I've contacted the Howe Company to try to figure out its age but the company went to new ownership in the mid-1900's. There are no more existing records for scales made prior to this time. The scale platform is 13 1/2" X 19 1/2" It is 19" tall and the platform is 4 1/2" high. It weighs approximately 50 pounds. It is in operating condition. But it does need some cleaning up(See photos) It has some rust spots. All the original weights are still with the unit as well as the original wood plate that you stand. This really is an amazing piece and I have never seen another one like it. On the top of the silver plated goods plate is stamped"Howe" On the top of the cap over the body post is"Howe Scale Co. and"Rutland VT" in raised letters molded into the cast iron. There is gold ornamentation around the base edge. The top of the fish tail and the top of the base. On the back of the base there is a lot of fancy gold designs- lines, scrolls, etc. The brass beam and sliding poise are silver plated. The weight increments numbers are painted red with some marks worn off to black. Howe" is stamped at the end of the beam on both sides. On close inspection the remains of a decal can be seen on the post under the beam. Weights are marked by 1/4 oz. from 0 to 9 and numbered by ounce form 0 to 9.
