This is an early version Marchant Calculating ... moreMachine. The brass name tag just has the name The Marchant. Manufactured by The Marchant Calculating Machine Co. Inc. Oakland. Cal. It is the type with a cylinder shaped, or I think it called a pin wheel carriage at front and 9 slots above with a wood handled crank. There is a number stamped into the back metal plate near the top left that might be a model no. but not sure. It is Nc 01457. It is mounted on what appears to be the original quarter sawn oak base or platform with original rubber feet. The brass name plate has two patent dates. The first one is June 6, 1911 and last patent no. is Feb. 22, 1916 so this must be the second version. It is a bit dirty and has some expected light surface rust but things seem to move freely and I think it would be functional or could easily be made so. It might need to be opened up and cleaned or lubricated internally. Assume it has sat in a barn, shed, or garage for many years. Farm fresh as they say. The wood handle crank has a spring loaded rod that locks it in place at the bottom. I don't really have any idea how to operate it or tell you if something is not working as it should so bid on it as is and according to your knowledge of this machine and ability to restore it if necessary. Could benefit with some cosmetic cleaning, lubricating and general refinishing but doesn't look bad as it is. Quite heavy machine with cast iron and steel. A little too large for the large flat rate priority box so will have to be shipped based on weight and distance. This is a rare antique Rapid Computer calculator from Benton Harbor Michigan. Patented 1892. The computer/ calculator is in great condition, with only minor plating loss to the bottom. It includes the original leather bound wooden box, with scuffs from being in a drawer. The clasp and hinges to the box work perfectly. Overall in wonderful condition, with normal wear for its age. 1901- 1905 Locke Adder Calculator This adder was made in 1901 by the C. E. Locke Mfg. Co. in Kensett. Iowa, U.S.A. and marked as such on the right side. The left side says The Locke Adder, Patented Dec 24, 1901; Jan 3, 1905. Machine is pictured and described in the book“Antique Office Machines” by Thomas Russo. Invented and patented by C. E. Locke of Wisconsin in December 1901 with Patent Number 689,680. It was a finger sliding bar type adder with color-coding to readily tell dollars and cents. The Russo book states“Availability is Scarce and value of each is over $ 800.00” It measures 10 3/4" long, 4" wide and about 1/2" thick. There are 9 rows of moveable numbers, and on the left side there are marking points that go from 1 cent to 1 million dollars, on the right side the markings delineate units up 100 million. Handle pulls, numbers roll. All keys are there. Glass is unbroken. Missing wooden portion of handle Clean it up and it would still be a nice piece for display. Selling as is. Up for auction is this very nice antique"Darnley's Patent Rotatable Lightning Calculator. Pencil Case, Ruler& Measure. This calculator was manufactured in England and dates to about the early 1920's. Also included in this auction are some very old, colored tracing/drawing pencils that were all inside the calculator when acquired. There are 8 pencils and one that has a fountain nib on it. The majority of pencils are marked"Made in England Anglo"Utility" then the color written after that. Obviously they are all used in varying states of usage. The calculator is in very nice shape, made of tin it still has nice blue paint and rotates to work properly. There is the usual paint wear and scratches but no major dents etc. Please inspect all pictures carefully before bidding and ask all questions before as well. Two concentric cylinders, the outer rotates about the inner which is held. The inner cylinder is yellow metal casing, numbers are printed in black. One end cap can be removed to allow pencils, etc, to be stored within the cylinder. The device is a multiplication table reader with the number to be multiplied on one end of the inner cylinder and the multiplier on the same end of the outer cylinder so that the results for the numbers that might multiplied. This listing is for a very hard to find antique calculator called a Locke Adder. Made at C.E. Locke Mfg. Co. Kensett, Iowa, USA. The patent date is December, 24, 1901. There is a lot more interesting information about this calculator available on the internet. It is in very good + condition. Including the original red felt on the bottom. The felt is loose on the edges and has never been reglued. It shows almost no wear and the colors are very bright. The bars slide very good also. Please feel free to ask questions. 1903 Omega Calculator Adder This seldom found machine is a 1903 Omega Calculator manufactured in Munich Germany by Omega Company. They made the machine only 3 years. In 1906 a more common model was made and distributed to England. Both models were designed to be a four. 4 function machine to Add, Subtract, Multiply and Divide. Only a handful of the 1903 machines were produced. The Omega was a high-class advanced design that used the US Locke Adder as a base with increased functions using some designs found only in Napier Bones and Abacus. It was constructed by Justin Bamberger and received many decorations by“Jugendstil Movement” German Renaissance Group announcing new advancements in Design) The Box has some paper loss and a wood replacement on right side, but has preserved this treasure in very good operation and display condition. Only a few of these 1903 Omega Calculators known to exist are in a Professional Private Collection and the other in the Dresden Mathematical Salon in Germany. On the machine, it reads D.R. pat angem and D.R.G.M. which means that it is even older or 1st series of machines made by Omega. Also in the spelling Rechen Maschinenfabrik is a typesetter error. It is what as known as a pinwheel calculator. I found operating instructions for this on the internet and a lot of other info on this calculator at some of the vintage calculator sites. They were made between 1900 and 1920. And this one is serial number 16350. It adds, subtracts, multiples and divides and the handle turns freely. It does have some wear, but just exudes coolness and character and really looks beautiful! Serial number on rear is"No. 95785" On underside it is marked"M602n" Features a 10-digit wheel. Bell sounds when negative number generated, thumbscrews for resetting turn counter and results display. Carriage moves easily- left and right by single steps or by releasing catch. I believe this is calibrated correctly as I have played around with it and it adds. Subtracts, multiplies correctly. Couldn't work out how to do division! Has 4 original rubber feet although these have deteriorated with age. Machine appears ... moreto be in very good working order. Easy to use and moves smoothly. I think there was a slider on the turn counter, no longer present, otherwise this is a very commendable example. Paintwork needs a bit of restoration to restore it to shop-fresh condition and as you'd expect some marks have developed on the bodywork through use. ANTIQUE COMPTOMETER, WOOD ADDING MACHINE, MECHANICAL CALCULATOR, DORR E FELT
This is a 19th century wooden"shoebox" comptometer that was made by Dorr E. Felt& Tarrant manufacturing co of Chicago.in 1891. The serial# is 924. A relatively low# according to some online sites. There is one screw missing top left, two each on the left and right sides. There are two cracks in the wood on the left side at the bottom and one at the top of the box. There is a"dig" out by the dovetail at the top. There are surface scratches. It appears that something was splashed on the top and sides at some point. I did not clean the machine, as I did not want to affect the patina. Needs cleaning. The celluloid keys are missing and all the keys can be pressed down. There is a spring missing inside the bottom as well as the middle piece of wood on the bottom. Please see photos for condition. I am not mechanicaly inclined, ... moreso I can not tell you if it is working. Despite all of the afore mentioned, it really is amazing for its' age. It measures approx. 7 9/16"across the bottom including the knob. It is approx. 14 1/2" tall and 4 3/4" deep including the keys. According to some online sites, this 1887 USA patened"mechanical calculator" adding machine was the first key driven that was commercially successful. It was manufactured from 1887 to the mid 1970s. The earliest are made of wood with celluloid keys and were produced from 1887 to 1903. According to online sites, there were approx. 6500 of these made, but approx. 90 are known to exist. The earliest models are in the smithsonian, several in musuems, and the rest privately owned. As best as I was able to research, this comptometer with serial# 924 may be one of the first 26 machines with serial numbers known to exist. This would be a great addition to any collection. Antique R.C. Allen "Figuring Machine" Calculator
Go Figure I love the name of R.C. Allen company's old calculating machine: It's a"Figuring Machine. So if you haven't figured things out yet. Maybe you need one of these. OK: this collectable is in rough condition. The finish is"Barnyard Find" gritty and scratchy. The hand lever seems to be stuck, although I was able to ratchet it a few times before it got stuck. The keys are in varying degrees of quality; some good, some not so good. And one is missing. So this would be a neat display item, but don't do your tax calculations with it. R.C Allen model"66" measures 8" wide x 8.5" high x 13.25" deep. Since the machine is heavy(9.5 lbs) I'm opening bidding at a low price. This is a very early calculator. Probably dating back about 100 years. The pinwheel name comes from a circular disc or wheel with retractable pins extending around the disc. The concept of this type of toothed gear dates back to the 1600’s. The pinwheel calculator was a simple and reliable machine. And was capable of all four arithmetic functions, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. The Thales pinwheel calculator you are seeing today began appearing in 1911. This particular one dates between 1911 and 1920. Although it is said that this type of calculator was simple to operate. It looks puzzling to me. This is an antique adding machine named the Lightning Calculator that was made in Grand Rapids. Michigan USA. The calculator sits in nice piece of walnut wood that a grove the stylist that dials the numbers. The stylist is actually a nut picker with a bent end but it works to do the addition. Like all things, if you use it, you get faster at it. All the dials are in good working order, the one on the far left is a little stiff but it still works, it is the highest number and didn't get used much. The condition of the calculator is very good but it does have scratches all over the face plus a chip in the wood, it is still a good example of a machine before the computer. Antique Trinks-Brunsviga MR Mechanical Calculator – Serial #46857
This amazingly designed. Very heavy mechanical calculator(manufactured between 1921 and 1924… according to its serial number) is in good to very good condition. Although it came to us without instructions, I was able to figure out how to add, subtract, and multiply(more or less) with the machine; the divide function remains elusive. But, the point is, the machine appears to still work and seems to work well. The 3 reset knobs work easily and the lower carriage control functions very smoothly. The calculator crank also works well. It was apparently a well-used machine; much of the original finish has been worn off over the years. I’ve seen pictures of refurbished machines and I believe this one could once again sparkle with a little TLC. There appears to be 3 small screws missing from the front housing. One from the back cover plate, and the ... morelatch plate for the top cover has been removed. Since the unit came without a key for the top cover, I will assume the plate was removed so the cover could be put in place without latching and therefore remain removable. The wooden cover and machine wooden base are in very good condition. The overall size of the calculator is about 12” x 5” deep x 3 ¾” high; the wooden box is about 15” x 7 ¼” deep x 5 ¾” high. 1908 Lightning Calculator with Directions This is a 1908 The Lightning Calculator made in Grand Rapids. Michigan. It sits in a walnut wood base, with stylus in the original box& includes seldom found directions. Machine is in good operation and displays condition. Per the Ernst Martin and Thomas Russo books on antique calculators, this dates to 1908. Later models were produced in Bakelite Plastic bases in the 1920s.
