You are bidding on a vintage Antique CAST IRON SCALE. In used condition. Solid& sturdy in good shape. The brass pan/scoop has three small cracks on the edges, I tried to show the largest one in a picture. From a doctors estate it was on display in his office& looks like it was refinished at one time. One end has a brass scoop& the other end has a flat cast iron pan. The Scale is heavy& measures approx 12 3/8" long x 3 3/4" wide x 9" tall. The base reads: GEM No 5. There are 5 different size Brass weights that fit into holes on the base that are marked on the top: 1/4- 1/2- 1- 2- 4. The numbers stand for ounces. EARLY 1800'S ANTIQUE HAND FORGED IRON AND BRASS BALANCE SCALE WOOD BASE WEIGHTS
This auction is for a very wonderful early balance scale made of forged iron and brass on a wood base. It comes with weights that are hallmarked. I am putting the scale in the 1800's category. But I feel that it could be earlier. The larger brass pan lifts out of the hanger which is wonderfully forged(see photos) and has ram's horn ends. The smaller brass pan is attached to the iron piece. Three of the weights are brass and the other three are iron. I have not researched the hallmarks on the weights, but that might give a clue to the date. The scale has nice patina except that someone cleaned the iron of the smaller brass pan, apparently when they polished the brass pans. It is unfortunate, but you can see the pitting in the iron and it is clear that it is indeed old iron. Both arms with pans on each side can be removed from the main ... morearms. The scale may be European in origin and may have been imported early on for use in this country, I don't really know. Also, I can't remember if I purchased the iron weights separately, but I know for sure that the brass one came with it. In any case you get all the weights. Scale measures overall 15 1/4" tall x 13 3/4" wide x 7" deep. Small pan is 4 1/8" in diameter. Large pan is 7 7/8" diameter x 6 1/4" it's oval) Brass weights are 1, 2, 4 oz. Old marble,brass&wood apothecary scale with weights...calibrated!
Here is a vintage marble top apothecary scale(18 in X8h X7w) with a complete set of weights. It has brass trays on a wood case with beading(a couple of inches of beading missing. See pic) The trays polished up nicely. The finish is as is on the wood. Scales like this date somewhere between the late 1800's and early 1900's. It has been balanced by gluing a thin circle of aluminum under one tray, so that the scale zeros out nicely when that tray is placed on the metal holder marked"L" I found no makers mark anywhere on this piece, though I did not take it apart to look inside the mechanism. Besides being decorative and interesting, this scale can be used! There are 8 gram weights, from 50g down to 1g. There is a set of five"DR" weights, a different measure called a"drachm" There are 7 tiny aluminum chip ... moreshaped weights, from 500 mg down to 10mg. Along with the scale and hopper are the following 7 weights: 2 pound 1 pound 8 ounce 4 ounce 2 ounce 1 ounce.5 ounce(half an ounce) These are all in the typical shape for thier age with suface rust. The scale appears to work fine. I put the 2 pound weight on one side and the remaining weights on the other side(2 pounds vrs. 1 pound 15 and half ounces) and it almost balances. The scale is in good shape with some dents and dings there is some rust on the underside of the cast iron scale. But it has a nice patina look for its age and everything seems to work. The counter weight moves easily back and forth across the beam that measures in 2's. 2-4-6-8-10-12-14-16) The company name"BUFFALO SCALE CO. U.S.A. is printed on the end of the beam on both sides. I am offering a stunning antique analytical balance. Pre-1930's, made in Germany and distributed by Cambridge Botanical Supply Co. Waverly, Mass. complete with weights and 2 extra pans. This scale measures approximately 17 inches wide, 17 inches high and 9 1/2 inches deep. The scale has one drawer. Other than in the back, the case is in excellent shape and has a beautiful patina. The back of the scale at the very bottom has some damage(see photographs) I could have easily repaired this damage, however, I wanted the buyer to see the exact condition of the case. On the left side of the case, on the bottom the veneer is slightly lose and needs to be re-glued. The case is structurely sound and otherwise in excellent condition. The repair would be a minor one. Antique 1800s Portable English Medical/Gold Scale + Oak Box, Weights & Tweezers.
Very special antique portable English Medical scale from the mid 1800s. Made by the W& T Avery company located in Birmingham. England. Specifically in the neighborhood of Digbeth. The company came into existence in the early 1700s and is still in operation today. This is a portable scale for use in the field by doctors of medicine and veterinary to weigh out ingredients for treatment. A beautifully aged solid oak box with a rich patina, holds the beam scales, tweezers and weights. Lid and bottom are also solid oak. The box is of simple construction using the square-faced butt joint. Glue and small square nails are used to hold it together. Simple wire hinges hold the lid in place. The inside bottom of the box is lined with cloth. The 5 3/4" long beam scale has a little bit of oxidation. The 2 5/8" wide concave glass pans are ... morein very good condition and are held in place with green string. The scale still balances nicely when hung. Tweezers and weights are original. Weights are marked in Drams and Scruples. All hardware is original. As is the finish on the box. The box measures 7" long x 4 1/8" deep x 1 1/2" tall. Weights are all solid brass. This is beautiful of piece of medical history. Shipping weight is just under 1 pound. No reserve! Brief Company History: The undocumented origin of the company goes back to 1730 when James Ford established the business in. When Joseph Balden died in 1813(the then owner) William and Thomas Avery took over his scalemaking business and in 1818 renamed it W& T Avery. The business rapidly expanded and in 1885 they owned three factories: the Atlas Works in West Bromwich, the Mill Lane Works in Birmingham and the Moat Lane Works in Digbeth. This piece will come to you in good condition. The scale measures approx. 8 inches from top to bottom when hanging. The arm measures approx. 5 3/4 inches. Each of the brass plates measure a little over 2 1/4 inches. This brass piece has good patina and has never been cleaned. The plates do show a few dings and dents(see pics) The weights will come to you in the original wooden box. Vintage Scales Brass and Metal Scale for Pharmacy, gold weighing? No weights
What you see is what you get here. Small scales that I am not sure what they were used for. Comes in orginal box(rough condition box that someone scrawled"scales" on) No weights included! The scales move up and down easily, probably need adjusting, but otherwise looks to operate well. Approximate Size: 7& 1/2 wide, 3& 1/4 deep and 4" tall. These are old and used, I don't do any cleaning or tinkering with my items for fear I might damage them. So what you see is what you get! Sales to the U.S. only. Antique Apothecary Counter "Praecision" Weight Balance Scale w Avery Weights
This is antique scale of the type often seen during the late 1880 to about 1920 in apothecary. Pharmacy and small stores. This is marked with a trademark showing a balance bean scale arm and the words"PRAE" then a star and"CISION" which we have tried to find out more about but could not. The scale also is marked 10Kg the beam arm. We couldn't find any other marks. It includes a set of W. T. Avery weights as marked; 1 lb AVERY Ltd- inner stamp on lead looks like crown. G, and 9 can't make out the R, A21, 24, 25,27,not sure if this is 23 or 28)31,33,34 8 oz AVERY Ltd- inner stamp on lead crown. GR,9- several marks on bottom J21, 24,25,26,27,31,33,34 4 oz W& T. AVERY Ld- inner stamp on lead looks like 27.7. Crown, GR, not sure of what is below that, no stamps on bottom. 2 oz W& T. AVERY Ld- inner crown stamp. ... moreLooks like GR, stamped on metal bottom, C26 1 oz W& T. AVERY Ld- inner stamp- hard to make out. Looks like crown, GR, but possibly ER, 31, marks on base 19-3, 1953, 1954 1/2 oz AVERY-inner stamp. None bottom; crown,GR, 37 O, then D/1 one bell type weight marked 1 lb AVERY. Looks like Crown, ER, possibly 64. the height of the mast from the bottom of the base(from the table to the top) is approximately 28" Beam across approx 18" the pans measure approximately 10" The wood base is old and appears to be original. We could find no marking other than already stated as to the maker. Apears to be European. This was found in NH. We have left as found as some collectors prefer the original patina. I have taken alot of picture to show all the parts, it looks to be complete, but can not tell as I can't find any information as to the maker. The red and blue paint is in good con dition and th ere are weights that come with it as found. T he smallest brass weight is missing? The scacle is about 15" wide and 7" tall.
