Barber chairs could be raised, lowered, reclined and revolved, and in 1900, the familiar hydraulic-operated barber chair was patented. In 1900 there were two American primary dealers for barber chairs. Emil J. Paidar and Koken. Sources indicate the Emil J. Paidar Company of Chicago, Illinois was the leading company through the 1950s, producing top of the line barber chairs along with other barber shop necessities. The Koken and Paidar chairs were similar in function and price points. This balance between the barber chair manufacturers lasted until a third competitor arrived on the scene. Takara. Takara, a Japanese company, was expanding their operations overseas in the 1950s. The US Tariff Commission ... morewrote of Takara in 1970: After World War II a vigorous new barber chair industry grew up in Japan. Through energetic design. Sales and advertising campaigns, this industry built up the barber chair market in Japan until it is larger than that of the United States, despite the smaller population of Japan. Takara produced chairs of almost identical style and function to the Paidar and Koken chairs for substantially less and took advantage of decreasing tariffs to expand their operations in America. Imports increased dramatically in the late 1950s and through the 1960s. Supplanting the American-manufactured barber chairs. In an additional clever move. 1950s Texas Barber's License, Frame, Certificate Holder, Vintage Barber Shop
Offering one glass frame with scalloped edges. And a metal back. It has Barber Shop motif bright foil attached inside to serve as a frame. The size is approximately 7" by 5" The metal back is affixed by crimping into the recesses of the glass panel. This frame holds a Texas Board of Barber Examiners certificate, and an application issued to a certain George F. Benson, Marilla, Erie County NY, as a Registered Barber Class A, dated 1959. End looks a little rough seen in pictur e 11. Brown leather is good with no rips. Buckey part bent on ends some and missing screw. Vintage Koken Barber Chair Porcelain Arms. Base, Trim& Handle- The Porcelain is in Amazingly Good Condition. One chip found on the underside of the handle. The Handle is used to lock or unlock the chair from spinning. It works perfectly. Head Rest- Twin Prongs. Push Button Release, Rollers. Decorative Sides and Koken name on Mounting Hardware(very nice) Foot Rest- Double Plates w/ Original Brackets. Flips up and down one side sho wing the green upholstery. The other Metal. Stylish Design w/ Koken Name on Both Sections(need to be cleaned and and polished) Cool Vintage Leather Sharpening Strop- Reads: Broncho with a picture of a Cowboy on a Horse- not a vital part of the chair. But still a cool bonus) Condition Issues: The original upholstery(the green leather) is shot. There are two major tears. The section located on the back of chair ... moredry and cracked, it looks better in the picture. Than it really is. but, The seat and headrest were re-upholstered. In white and look good. The porcelain handle has a decent sized chip. at least 1" long) fortunately it is on the underside and cant be seen. The handle seems to stick out at a strange angle. Im not sure why. I tested it and it is firmly attached, and it works perfectly, but something just does not look right(see pictures) That being said, This Chair is in Excellent Condition. It could be completely restored in one weekend. Loaded with bells and whistles. All in good working c ondition. If Ive left out important details. This is a very nice working condition chair. The hydralics. Tilt and lock all work great. No chips or cracks in the porcelin. The crome is in very good condition. Would prefer to have this a local pick up. May consider shipping. This chair will break down into three or four pieces. I haven't moved it for well over a dozen years. It has been reapolstered with a red velvet material. The head rest also works properly.

Red Barber Chair circa:1920's, 1930's,has the very rare Paidar spring cushion patent Headrest with polished brass name plate, also has upholstered foot rest. All seat cushions have been redone in brilliant Red including back and headrest. All steel has been polished. Two small chips in porcelain in front.Which i have shown in pictures. All hydraulics work. And chair swivels back and fourth,and goes up and down. And reclines fully back Nice porcelain base. Vintage KOKEN MINIATURE Barber Shop Chair Pewter Salesman Sample VERY RARE!

I believe it is made of solid pewter or possibly lead(A magnet does not stick to it so i know its not iron and too heavy to be aluminum) it is VERY heavy only about 6 inches tall and 3 1/2 inches wide but weighs several pounds. As you can see in the pictures it looks very crudely made yet very detailed! There are no actual makers marks on it that I see, but was told it was really old when I purchased it from an estate tag sale. I have never seen another or anything like it. I have a 195-1960 Emil J. Paidar barber chair in great condition! Hydrolic. Tilt and spin work perfectly. It has all parts(foot rest, arm rests, head rest, etc. It's white in color- and other than a few paint chips on the footrest(as seen in picture) it looks great. It's been sitting in our salon and rarely gets used. We are remodeling and no longer have room for it. This is for local pick up only. I cannot ship.

Very Rare Kochs Antique Folding Barber Chair#40 extremely rare The Kochs factory in Chicago was the world leader of cost efficient well made chairs. These were considered the premiere barber chair of the day. This particularly interesting chair was named simply#40. It was made of oak and covered in velour plush fabric and fringed extensively. The back of the chair was enameled and then upholstered. Other sources suggest that there may have been varied uses for this chair which gave cause for different coverings. Cloth for hotel use or traveling summer barber. Leather or Canvas for soldiers use. One additional use of the chair was for dentistry. The unique design of this rare chair took up very little space and weighed less than 25lbs. Ideal for traveling. found in an old Southern Illinois estate and being sold as is/ as found. Koken companies. St Louis and New York USA. Patented" Antique Koken barber chair parts with footrest and original arms Porcelain? and brackets. a lot of these footrests were brass but until cleaned up by someone with knowledge in these I couldn't tell you for sure if its brass or another metal. nice piece with lettering still legible and only one small break in the metal as shown in the photos(this does not hurt the structure of the piece any. Very solid. but if you wanted it could be welded very easily) nice old piece and more complete than most being sold. actual footrest portion with the lettering measures 16 1/4" x 7" note that because of the age this piece will need a good cleaning due to the rust.
