These areas are on the right side edge of the top at the back on both the right and left sides, and one small area on the bottom drawer front next to the front leg. The chest of drawers has reeded accents running down both sides at the front that continues onto all four feet, which are straight and tapering. STUNNING WILLIAM AND MARY CHEST- DRESSER- FROM H.&S. POGUE - CIRCA 1880's
It gets harder and harder to find truly old and truly unique items. Things with the beauty and craftsmanship that is impossible to reproduce. This chest is both. The structural integrity is still there- strong and sturdy. This William and Mary style chest has every detail you can dream of-a trestle bottom with barley twist legs- floral inlay that is simply eye watering.I might also mention that every drawer has a different floral medallion surrounding it's lovely original hardware. There is also a band of tailored inlay framing the top. That same banding runs down the sides. There are seven heavy dovetail drawers(two smaller up top and five full length) The upper two have a velvet insert. I have also photographed the interior of the drawers because it is evidence of the quality work done many years ago. This dresser is American made and ... morewas originally sold at H. S. Pogue in Cincinnati. OH. The store originally opened it's doors in 1863. I believe this dressing chest to be Circa 1880's. There is a wonderful crazing to the old finish that is stunning. PLEASE view all of the photos- as you must see to get any idea of the amount of detailing there really is in this piece. The only issues I can think to mention- is that there is a couple of surface spots in the finish on the top- pictured) and it also appears that someone had to cut a little niche' above one of the keyholes(someone probably locked and lost the key at some point. Each drawer has a brass framed key hole- I do not have the key. I am also not sure if this is Rosewood or Mahogany.This beauty measures 57 1/2" high x 38 1/4" wide x 22 1/4" deep. The original label from Pogue's is still on the back. This is also a numbered piece- stamped 1161 A- and then there is a number 22 also stamped into the wood. The wood has developed crackling over the drawer fronts and top surface. This gives the chest a distressed look and provides character and charm to an already lovely dresser! We are pleased to be offering today this gorgeous seven drawer period Beidermeier flame mahogany dresser that comes with seven drawers to depicted the seven days of the week. Legend goes that this was designed a long time ago(you can find them nowadays coming out of Germany. Belgium and Denmark) This particular dresser represented the workers seven days of the week and he had the respective clothes with Sunday being the most special day, so it held the most clothes. They were never made with handles and the drawers are opened with the use of a key. Some people argue that the white escutcheon it is a plastic composite and other say it is celluloid. I just say it is very nice to keep it original. This particular chest dates from the 1850s era and is in wonderful condition. It comes with a large original key and all the locks appear to lock, ... morebut we never guarantee our locks to work as they always have to be peeled apart, oiled and maintained as they are very fussy. The chest itself is breathtaking. Look at the selection of the flame mahogany that adorns the face of the hand cut dove tail drawers! The simplicity of no handles is a very stylish move. It has a clamshell molded top and ends with a bun foot that shows signs of the old European wood borers that used to burrow into the wood and they are all gone, but does show signs. It is all good and bug free! The only thing I can see wrong with it is that there was a little chip on the right hand side that the warehouse has professionally repaired and I can’t even see it in the photos. It is all original with even the original chamfered back. It comes apart on top to the second drawer of the base if you want to make it a little shorter for shipping. I bought this from an old timer here in Hatfield and it was his mother's. That makes me the second owner. It dates to 1888-99 based on the scallop. And pin joinery shown in the drawers. It is all original. All drawers work well. One of the drawers has a square of yellow paint on the inside front. Also. There is one solid brass drawer pull that does not match all the others. I found. A semi match in a salvage shop in Aurora. Oregon. I currently have this piece in my living room and it looks gorgeous. Way to nice. Antique mahogany inlaid travel dresser case, chest 1700's? 1800's
Here we have today is a lovely antique mahogany travel dresser case. Chest from sometime between the 1700's-1800's. Not sure of the true age of the piece or where it was made, it just came with a note which read Georgian mahogany dressing case c 1780. Case has nice wood inlaid, it is 13 1/2" long, 10 1/2" wide and 7" tall. Piece has a main compartment with removal mirror, eight in laid boxes, two glass jars and lots of storage space. There is one main tray that can be removed. There is a bottom drawer which opens up and has a top lid. I could not get the drawer to go all the way back in and there is a crack to the wood bottom of the drawer. The lining of the case is cracked, all of the boxes are in good aged condition, no cracks to the removable boxes, the glass bottles have no cracks, there are some small chips to ... morethe edges, the mirror is in really good condition for it's age, and the pin cushion and other fabric covered pieces have wear, rips and spotting to the fabric. Box shows average wear for it's age, There is some inlaid missing from the top, there is a crack along the top, scuffs and scratches, but everything is tight and nothing is coming apart. The brass handles are tight and box once had a lock to it, but the key is long gone. There is a chip to the bottom front edge of the box, and fading to the wood at the ends of the box. This case is still a really nice antique piece which would be a great addition to anyone's collection.
