19th c. Solid Red Oak Hand-Carved 3-Drawer Chest Magnificently Constructed
Just look at the details of the hand carvings and you can see the inconsistencies that denotes the mark of the carver's hand- the lovely'acorn on leaf' drawer pulls are all hand-carved. But no two are alike-they're like the snoflakes of drawer pulls. They all look alike. But they are all distinctively different. To me. This makes the piece quite sweet and charming. You'll see many of these types of carved pulls from time to time. But rarely will you see the drawers trimmed in the elongated oval like on these drawer fronts-VERY nice accent. There are wooden escutcheons on the three drawer. The top being triangular and the other two being round in shape. There is some very perfect cracking on the edge of the top. Just enough to be artistically welcome. But not enough to compromise the structure of the piece. The center drawer ... moreis on hinges. And opens up like a breadbox. The hand-carved skirt is impressive. The drawers had locks. Mostly missing However. It stands 49" high, 42" across, 17" deep. The two small drawers on top are 3 1/2" high. They have round cookie corners. 1870's-1880's Victorian Hand Carved Boot-Jack First one of these we've had the pleasure of offering! This is a late 19th Century(1870-80's) walnut boot-jack. Possibly English in origin from it's design. The boot-jack was a very necessary item for a fine gentleman to remove his own boots when a servant wasn't available. This boot-jack has ring turned posts, with cut notches and stylized lily designed tops and bases, really pretty. The plinth(base) has a boot recess with somewhat chewed looking tips. The other end is for the other foot to rest on. It has a four leaf clover carved in the center, and it appears to be one of another wood, maybe hickory or chestnut. There are two turned supports from which the swinging boot stabilizer is hung. The finish is original and worn from age and use. The boot-jack is 33 1/2" ... moretall, and 14 5/8" wide. Very Nice Antique Empire Style Dresser with hand carved columns, flame mahogany
Hi. And thanks for looking! This listing is for a real antique empire style dresser. This is a good sized piece, 47 inches high, 42.5 wide, and 23 deep. There is three drawers on the bottom and two up top, all with hand cut dovetails. I think the bottoms of the drawers as well as other parts are all one piece of wood with no seams. The front has beautiful flame mahogany veneer which is in fairly good shape except on the top drawers, which have slight curve. Along each side of the front are greek colums with hand carved details top and bottom. The top of the dresser is two boards that have been painted to look like wood grain. There is a gap in between them, due to age I suppose. All the drawer pulls are clear glass, I don't think they are original, but they are old, and some don't match exactly. This is an antique Eastlake hand-carved dresser cabinet with a swivel mirror and one drawer. Quite unusual and ornate in styling. Lots of hand-carved detailing including a lovely Victorian fern in a pot on the top of the drawer. The initials"DB" are carved into the pot of the fern. Perhaps this was made as a gift to"DB" In generally good condition with what appears to be the original finish. The mirror has a good deal of silver loss but no cracks or chips. It sits firmly and holds its position when swiveled. There is a small stress crack on the left rear corner(next to the mirror support) which has been repaired and is now quite stable. See close-up. The rest of the piece is remarkably free of scratches or cracks. The bow-front drawer slides open and closed smoothly. Appears to be the original, ornate knob. The bottom drawer is constructed of 2" thick from mahogany wood. The small pulls are solid brass. The sides of the chest have matchbook veneer. The marble top is in very good condition, no cracks. The drawer bottoms and sides are mahogany. Quality piece! The chest measures about 36" long x 19" deep x 29 1/4" tall. Overall I would say the chest is in very good condition for age and use. The back of the dresser shows it belonged to Henry Wims(Williams) An ex-slave according to the News-Palladium from Benton Harbor Michigan(Saturday, April 1, 1950(pg.9) Henry came up to Benton Harbor from Kentucky through Indiana in 1882. When he was a young man, about 20 years of age. He had been to Louisville where the cars stopped and where there was a great concentration of Union soldiers during the Civil war and decided to follow the railroad north and see where the tracks joined the"Underground railway" that he had heard so much about. Also, his wife's father lived at St. Joseph, where there were many ex-slaves and their descendants. His travels brought him to Benton Harbor. The solid walnut dresser ... morehas hand-carved walnut and leaf pulls. Hand-dovetailed drawers and square nails show expert craftsmanship. Finish is excellent with warm antique patina. There are minor stains and likely some wax drippings of candles on the top; missing and broken trim on the bottom left; broken side edge at the back right of the dresser. see photos) Size of this classic American furniture is 40"wide. 17 3/4" deep, and 39" tall.
