It is an unusual desk with drawers opening on both sides and one door on both sides. Each side has a center drawer, a right-hand drawer, and a right-hand door. The desk was refinished in the last 10 years or so and whoever it was did a wonderful job. The desk has dainty carved cabriole legs with brass fillagree on the elbows and castors. The drawers are all dove tail with brass ribbed knobs. The doors have locks, but there is no key. The desk is in wonderful condition apart from two small cracks on the solid oak top that has nothing to do with structure and you wouldn’t want to touch it. Condition: Used Location: Des Moines, United States This tall antique oak file-drawer cabinet with flat file drawers dates to sometime between the late 1800s to the first decade of the 20th century. The cabinet was manufactured by Rockwell& Rupel of Chicago, Illinois, and I have not been able to find another example of it anywhere online-in fact, I've only been able to find two file drawer cabinets made by this company: one is a smaller tabletop model, and the other was a wider one that was auctioned by Christies of London in 2006 for several thousand dollars. So, I think it would be fair to say that this is a rare piece of furniture. Probably used in an office setting in the late 19th to early 20th century. It later spent many years in use at a hand-crafted furniture company. When purchased it still contained piles of screws and cabinet knobs! As shown, the bottom two drawers are missing. I removed them, as they had been loaded down with screws and the bottoms were very beat up. HOWEVER, I saved the FRONTS(see second photo) and they could be attached as false fronts or of course a woodworker could replace the drawers. As shown, at some point in its long history the cabinet either had two top drawers replaced with one deep drawer, or perhaps only the cabinet pull was replaced. The drawer fronts have the remnants of old taped labels as well as scratches. Carved numbers, and plenty of wear. The bottom of the cabinet has significant wear to the trim, and I removed some of the side trim that was in bad shape. The cabinet and all its remaining drawers are in good structural condition and all the drawers are clean and open and close properly. The cabinet measures 60" tall, 30&3/4" wide, and 18&1/2 inches deep. Fixing this up is entirely optional-I love its worn. Industrial look and the hand-carved dentil molding and old-fashioned brass-plated label drawer pulls. This piece is quality made with hand worked dovetails. Paneled back, quality workmanship throughout, two of the draws have the original inserts that would be adjusted front or back depending on how full the draw was, these inserts are both labeled"Library Bureau" with patent dates listed for New York/ Chicago, Boston/ Washington, and Philadelphia/ London, the dates range from March 15, 1892, to May 26, 1903. The condition of this cabinet is remarkably good with just a few minor issues which can be seen in the photos.one of the drawers has been glued on the bottom toward the back, there is a small chip out of the wood on each corner in the bottom back(where you really have to look hard to see them) the wood and finish show really little wear for the age, the wood has darkened more toward the back than in the front.
