I had previously wrongly described it as Tiger Oak and was roundly criticized and corrected) To further clarify after having an expert examine this item. The chest is solid Tiger Maple, however the drawers are Tiger Maple veneer. The drawer tops are finished off with a stronger wood strip which might be mahogany to absorb the extra stress when the drawers are opened and closed. Empire Cherry& Tiger Maple Chest or Console. This wonderful New England furniture was created about 1835 as an Empire period chest or dresser. Sometime later a very skilled carpenter reduced its depth to fit a particular spot as a console. Entirely hand made of solid cherry and shimmering tiger or curly maple. The satiny finish is excellent. The front edge of the cherry top is beautiful- natural golden sapwood. When the drawers were shortened, they were hand dovetailed, just as when first made. Walnut knobs on the top two drawers are still secured with wooden dowels instead of screws. Drawer bottoms are chamfered on this charming American antique. When the drawers are opened. Fabulous early 19th century antique American cherry and tiger maple dresser with original Sandwich glass knobs. Dresser measures 39 1/2" across. 19 1/2" deep, and 45" tall. Drawers are constructed with fine dovetails. They all retain their original locks, but I don't have the key. There is writing inside the top of the dresser which I believe details the origin of the dresser. I can make out something that looks like"day before Christmas" and numbers, but I can't read most of it. A photo of the writing is shown in the next to the last photo above. Child's size tiger maple dresser. This is a keeper! Not a miniature! Very special maple with great figure as you should be able to see in the photos. This is the second of two dressers. I used the same photos from the first chest of the drawer and back. There is no difference. 4 graduated drawers. Mitered top molding. Mitered bottom molding. Nicely shaped bracket feet. The drawers are made of poplar and the back is cherry. This is HAND MADE and new. I never use pine. Only hardwoods even for drawer bottoms or backs. American made solid brass knobs. This has a glass smooth hand rubbed finish to a satin sheen. I get better detail in natural light but it does make the dresser look a shade lighter and brighter. You will not see chips and tears in the wood. DIMENSIONS: 18 1/2" wide. 17 3/4" tall and 9 1/8" deep. Thanks!

I purchased this piece at Antique Emporium in Modesto. California July 2003. I simply fell in love with it. The receipt I have states it is a"tiger maple dressing table with Cheval Mirror, circa 1895. I have purchased many items from these folks through the years for my personal enjoyment. I am not an expert in antiques. I do know what I like and this is a gorgeous wood very unusual to me, unlike the other pieces I have collected. I sell it now only due to a move. It is carved. Curvy, graceful, beautiful and graced my entry hall as the show piece that I think it is. I decorated it for every holiday and it is a delight for everyone. This chest has the highest craftsmanship employing cockbead molded drawers. A turret shaped top, solid Tiger maple sides, solid tiger maple formed apron and solid tiger maple gallery. The fronts of the chest are all executed in Birds Eye Maple. It has the very best done carved, turned, tapered and scribed fully formed columns and legs. ... moreThe drawers are all done with blind boxed dove tail sets which was the very highest possible form of cabinetry and joinery. The chest has all its original glue blocks and is absolutely structurally wonderful. It's nothing less than every ounce of spectacular. The top drawer is laid out with dividers, all the secondaries are wonderfully oxidized white wide old growth pine solid panels showing great hand hewn and tools marks. We observed what may be a veneer restoration to the right side of the top drawer. This is also very likely to be simply how it was made or a splitting of a veneer being addressed by the craftsman who made it. We see no other evidence of any alterations on the chest so we suspect it was a case of the later. The sides of the case are very nicely shaped all flowing with the front apron. This chest is accented by wonderful brass embossed rosettes on its back galley. The period brass pulls are most wonderful and everything they should be when decorating a chest like this. Antique Tiger Maple Grain Painted Medicine Cabinet – Ca. 1890-1900
I am a cabinetmaker in southeastern Penna. When I have slow down time or between projects I build or refinish various pieces of furniture. I picked up this Ca. 1890- 1900 Victorian Medicine Cabinet. I repaired all loose glue joints, and repainted it in the manor of tiger maple grain. I finished the flush wall mounted cabinet in 2009 and it has not been used since the total rebuild[it has just been sitting around the shop] Minor paint chips on the inside of door leave as is or an easy touch up– see picture. Selling the antique 4-Drawer Walnut Empire/ Federal Dresser with Tiger Maple Inlay& Walnut veneer front c. mid 1800s. All drawers are dove tailed and have glass knobs(except the blanket drawer which has grooves on the bottom where you pull it open) The dresser measures approx 45" high x 42" wide x 22" deep. A few small pieces of veneer are missing and one small area of veneer is buckled. The front right foot has a cosmetic crack. Overall. A very nice looking antique piece of furniture.
