The library and its furnishings were built and created in 1959-1960. The interior also featured Florence Knoll chairs and tables. This Mid Century. Architecturally inspired sofa is extremely unusual in that it has a"pull-out" feature that creates a deeper seating area or daybed for one. Seldom seen. We spoke with the librarian at the location, who had been there for 30+ years, and were told that the chairs and sofa had been recovered in the late 1970's. It measures 76" long, 28" high, seat is 30" deep and 36" when extended. The pull out feature works smoothly. The seat cushion is not attached. It has a square tubular brushed chrome and steel frame and legs and light blue tweed fabric. There is a frayed area on the front bottom right corner of the bottom platform and there is some minor discoloration but it has not been steamed cleaned. Late 1920's Karpen Brothers sofa/couch and chair. Made of Velmo(velour& mohair) I'm pretty sure this came from the Chicago factory. The set has a resemblence to the Charles II style Karpen had sold. I believe the wood carving is mahogany wood. The cushions are tapestry on one side and can be reversed to solid brown velmo on the other. Selling as-is- it has been well used. The entire set is need of reupholstering and I am in no way inferring that it is otherwise. The backs. Arms, and feet are still solid. The carving at the top of the chair is cracked but it is all there and can be glued. I am not an expert on Antique furniture however based on my research and info from the previous owner this is a Chippendale Mahogany 100% SILK Camel back sofa with down seat cushion. It has no visible tears that I can easily see. All 4 clips to attach seat cushion are in excellent condition. The zipper for the cushion cover is in excellent condition. Needs to be cleaned and the Mahogany legs do show some vintage wear but could easily be refinished. The colors are vibrant and I don't know if this is the original fabric or if it is a re-cover. I believe this sofa to be from 1923. It was out of my grandmothers original estate in Atlanta. When I was little I recall two identical sofas at either end of the room that were moved on special occasions for ballroom dancing. I don't know what family member ended up with its mate. I brought it to New Jersey& had it re upholstered a few years ago. It was done with very heavy high end velvet stripe. 80x 32. It is solid. Very heavy. The cushions are down filled but could use some fluffing. The seat is a single cushion This is a stunning piece and I will miss it greatly, but, has to find a new home. Check out the woodwork. This piece likely sold for 2-3 thousand dollars new at the design shop on Peachtree road where it was originally sold. The fabric is in great condition too, however there is some fading with the fabric, you could use as is with one side of the cushion without anyone noticing, but when you flip the cushion, it is pretty obvious. It has a small tear approximately 3" long on the right hand side backrest area and a small worn spot on the lower front(see photos) It is a beige color with a semi-floral pattern. I'm not positive, but I believe that the upholstery is original. It is 74" long from armrest to armrest.
