Overall Condition, Good, Damage/Repair, cracks in the back and in base. Wear and scrapes in places. HEAVY, Additional Information: Additional Information: This standing female figure with large head. Elaborate coiffure, scarifications on back and abdomen, and hands on the breasts comes from the Luba people. This is a classic Luba style with perfect sizes. It represents a female ancestor as usually see in the art of the Luba. It is through woman that the continuity of the clan is ensured. It is through woman that the ancestor reveals himself anew in the child"Neyt, F, 1994) The woman gives life and nourishes the community. In Holding or presenting breasts she claims her privilege status as guarantor of fecundity and well-being for members of her society. The Luba excel at the veneration of feminine beauty and motherhood. And much of their skillfully crafted artworks, like this exquisite headrest, reflect this ideal. The history of the Luba can be traced back at least 500 years, and they have dominated much of southern part of the Congo during most of this time span. At the height of their expansion their empire stretched east all the way to Lake Tanganyika. Luba Society is still a large culture, numbering about 1,000,000, and their influence remains significant. While there are dozens of art-producing peoples of Congolese origin who have contributed significantly to the recognition of Central African art, the Luba, along with their closely related neighbors the Hemba, are debatable the most important of them all, with many masterpieces scattered throughout the world. The world's greatest museums and private collections are filled with Luba sculpture. As the beauty of some of their finest pieces transcends those of almost any other African culture. BASONGYE, BASSONGO, BAYEMBE, SONGE, SONGHAY, WASONGA) There are numerous mask styles associated with the Songye. Power objects and objects associated with divination are also prevalent in Western collections. In the past many Songye objects have been misattributed to the Luba and vice versa. Songye origins are shared with the Luba through a common mythical Songye ancestor known as Kongolo. Who can be traced through lineages to the 16th century. The linguistic traditions of these neighboring peoples are intertwined as well. The Lomani River divides Songye territory and marks the boundary of the areas invaded by the Luba. As a result of these geographic and political differences there emerged of two distinct social structures among the eastern and western Songye and two stylistic differences in art forms between the two areas. The Songye traditionally relied mostly on farming and hunting for subsistence. Because the rivers were associated with the spirits of deceased chiefs who were often buried in them. Fishing was not practiced except in times of great need. The artistic wares of the Songye, including pottery made by women and weaving and metalworking done by men, were traded extensively with their neighbors. They were recognized as superior craftsmen, and their products were in great demand. The Songye are divided into about 35 subgroups. The paramount chief(Yakitenge) and his advisers are the central power in Songye territory. Many of the subgroups were actually quite large. Were often spread over m
