And have been treasured by several owners.  Small splits, scrapes and cracks are a normal part of their patina attesting to their age and extensive use. We examine each piece carefully when we receive it and report any damage we find in our listings. Please look carefully at the pictures which may also reveal condition and damage. Damage/Repair, both legs broken off and repaired. Crack in one side of head and face, Additional Information: This well used sculpture is out of the ordinary when measured to the mainstream of Dogon art. There is no doubt as to its origin among the Dogon however is not illustrated in the literature and due to its unique seated angular shape and its bisexual character. It is unusual and exceptional. Among the Dogon of the Bandiagara escarpment near the Niger River in Mali, art and mythology are often the same, sharing visual images whether carved or spoken of during their rituals. A carving such as this old example of a seated figure representing either an ancestor or primordial being is kept in the lineage elderâs house and is used during annual rites that took place during the winter solstice known as âgoruâ. The figure has a manâs beard and a womanâs breasts depicting a being that is in keeping with Dogon creation myths in which tell that beings were both male and female at one time. The head and headdress are particularly interesting. The sharply carved arms and legs and the shaping of the head and the mass of the upper chest makes this the work of a master carver of some skill. Museum Grade Jalisco Seated Man with elbows on knees. Holding a vessel on left shoulder. He is wearing multiple armbands, a headband, multiple earrings and a large pierced nose ornament. Male genitalia is indicated in the rough. Glazing still shows red and black pigments. Note the tattoo-like markings on the face. Figure has been repaired at the neck and the back of the skull.
