A pre-Columbian(Chancay culture) earthenware bottle or jar. This ovoid vessel with a flaring neck and arched handles has two appliquéd pods attached to one of its handles. The cream slipped body is decorated with a series of vertical brown bands. Most Chancay vessels display an elementariness of form and the seemingly spontaneous application of painted decoration as shown in this piece. Little is known of the Chancay society. But evidence indicates that it represented a small regional state made up of several ethnic groups inhabiting the coasts, desert lands and valleys of central Peru between 1000-1435 A.D. The Chancay are best known for their astonishing and unique craftsmanship that valued a high level of personalisation in decorative style. Producing woodworks. Textiles and ceramics, Chancay style artefacts are prevalent across central ... morePeru. This enigmatic society traded their goods widely with other regions either by land towards the Peruvian highlands and jungle or by sea to the north and south of their borders. As such, though the society does not appear to have wielded significant political power, the skill of their craftsmen appears to have been respected and admired. Several small chips to the lip and one at the base along with a dark stain from burial. Peru 1100-1400 AD ~ Sitting Jaguar Feline Figures ~ ~ please scroll down for more photos and information ~ SIZE: Textile- 8” x 12.5” 20 cm x 32 cm) Frame- 12.5” x 16.5” 32 cm x 42 cm) DESCRIPTION: Beautiful pre-Columbian Chancay Culture textile fragment. Depicting two sitting feline or jaguar figures and three floating heads. Framed under glass, textile sandwiched between the glass and a black cardboard backing(not examined out of frame) Finely woven llama wool and probably part of a tunic front. The frame is old and is painted red with tiny yellow spots to match the jaguars. So it was probably framed in Peru near where it was found. The frame goes displays the textile nicely and compliments it. Although a fragmentary textile. It has figurative designs that are rare and historically ... moreimportant. AGE: Circa 1100- 1400 AD. Pre-Columbian era. 600 to 900 years old. CONDITION: Good condition. As shown in the photos and with the following noted: This is a fragment of a textile, not a complete garment or blanket, as shown and described. Frame in good condition with light overall wear. HISTORY: Not much is known about the Chancay civilization which developed in the later part of the Inca empire. This culture emerged after the fall of the Wari civilization. Parts of the southern Chancay area were conquered by the Chimu in the early fifteenth century and in about 1450 A.D. the Incas were occupying both areas. It is believed that the Chancay had a centralized political structure. Forming a small regional state. Thus the Chancay culture declined in the fifteenth century to make way for the territorial expansion of the Inca Empire. Occupying the central coast coastal region of Peru. The Chancay were centered mostly in the Chancay and Chillon valleys, although they also occupied other areas such as the Rimac and Lurin valley areas.
