Pre-Columbian - Chupícuaro, miniature ceremonial bowl
This is a polychrome. Slip painted terracotta, Chupícuaro, miniature tripod ceremonial bowl. One other example of this artifact can be seen online at the University of Maine’s Hudson Museum/Palmer-collections under the item number HM410. The bowl is red and tan with an intricate image and design embellishing the interior. It is amazing that the artisans of that time could have created this delicate vessel with such fine decoration and detail and for it to have arrived here, in this condition, from nearly 2000 years ago. The ceramic style is named after the village of Chupícuaro in the western Mexican state of Guanajuato. Located in the Guanajuato valley surrounded by the Sierra de Guanajuato and situated on the Lerma River the culture was active from about 500 BCE to 300 CE, during the same time Teotihuacán flourished. Fortunately ... moreexcavations of the site were conducted in 1946-7 revealing much of what we know today. In 1949 the Solís Dam was constructed. This led to the flooding of the area which today remains under a lake formed by this act. Chupícuaro ceramics were formed without the use of a potting wheel.Condition– One of the tripod legs was evidently reattached but the repair is nearly invisible. There are some mineral deposits as would be expected. Provenance- This item was recently obtained from the estate of the late Willis Pratt, a career academic at the University of Texas in Austin. Dr. Pratt owned a residence in Guanajuato and frequently visited Central Mexico between the mid 1930’s and mid 1960’s. During this period he amassed a fine collection of many pre-Columbian artifacts which he kept and displayed in his home in Austin. Guaranteed authentic.
Pre-Columbian MOCHE pre Inca Nazca BOWL C.0 - 400 A.D. Peru Ancient RARE PAINT
Pre-Columbian Large Nazca Pottery BOWL C.0- 400 A.D. Peru Ancient RARE PAINT This is a fantastic pre-Columbian piece from an old pre 1965 new Orleans area collection. Acquired by the collecting family's grandfather while living and working in Peru and inherited over the past 2 generations. This fantastic reconstructed bowl has not been repainted but bears many figures and colors as well as symbols of the ancient moche or slightly later inhabitants of northern peru known as nasca pottery which is numbered in scale as it progressed in complicatedeness. This is the first piece I am offering and it is the first time it has been offered for sale since the 1950's! I am familiar with pre-Columbian art both north and south American and have shown this piece to several collectors and a friend who is a liscensed appraiser. This marvelous bowl ... morehas stripes. Geometric symbols, and animals that look like tentacle squid around the outsid of the completely painted bowl! both the inside and the outside are highly complex in design, not your typicalone color clay vessel! The shape was the favorite thing of my client's father and grandfather! When upside down, it resembles a flying saucer or space ship! Well, anyhow I can also mention antonltd who viewed the item and gave me an estimate agreed upon by two collectors, myself and him as the professional with a reconstructed value minimum $2200.00! I will provide a written original of his estimate for the $68.00 fee he charges to put everything inwriting should the buyer wish to have the appraisal from him. You can visit his site with online store and physical shops in Metairie,La.and Beverly Hills,Ca. He sells and makes jewelry, carries all types of antiques, furs and object d' art! he is a certified appraiser as well as a certified gia gemologist an an excellent jeweler! I recommend you visit his e-bay site under antonltd and see the quality of just a few items he has at auction. Remember, this piece is prt of a third generation Louisiana collect
PRE COLUMBIAN PANAMA MACARACAS BOWL -- TRANSITIONAL
Another superb Panamian bowl A very rare piece depicting motifs from two different cultures. Four double panels of the alligator god[upside down] the most basic Macaracas theme. Combined with four panels of Y and C scrolls the most basic Conte theme. Conte dating from 600-800 AD followed by Macaracas 800-1000 AD. These are also geographically seperated by 150 miles or so. The bowl itself is a common Macaracas type from the Parita area. Most often found as plain red bowls[note: bottom of this bowl] from quite small to very large. Less often found polychromed like this one red and purple outlined in black on a cream background. For whatever reason the artist decieded to pay homage to the earlier culture. This is most rare and to be found in Intact condition is a bonus. The top and inner area of the rim shows great wear from use, little chips ... moreand dings to the paint, the rim is unbroken. This vessel has zero repaint, 100% original. If found today it would have been touched up to eliminate the weak area. It was excavated in the early 1950's by Eva and Neville Harte who are famous in Panama and the US. They donated many pieces of gold and ceramics to the American Museum Heye Foundation and most of the Panamian gold in the Dumbarton Oaks collection came from them. Panama Macaracas 800-1000 AD 8 1/2" dia X 7 1/2" high guaranteed to be genuine as described FOREVER, comes with signed. AUTHENTIC Lot PRE COLUMBIAN JALISCO Pottery Vase Bowl Platter Mexico NO RESERVE
I purchased a large lot of pottery in a high-end auction. And these three pieces of Pre-Columbian pottery were included in it. A very old auction label on the bottom of one of the pieces identifies these as Jalisco. The vase in this lot has red painted details and is 4.5 inches tall. With an opening at the top of 3.5 inches in diameter. It is a beautiful piece but does have a chip on the top rim, which is shown in photos. There are also two very old labels on the bottom, which can be removed by the buyer if desired. The small bowl here is 4.25 inches in diameter and 2 inches tall. It has beautiful firing marks. Although it too has chips, shown in photos. The large platter/bowl is 9.5 inches in diameter and 2 inches tall. Again. Nice firing marks and overall a great looking piece. I am not a collector of this specific type of pottery. So please ... moreemail me if you have any questions I have not answered here. I am happy to reply. Happy bidding!

RARE Pre-Columbian CHUPICUARO FACE BOWL, circa 300 B.C.
RARE Pre-Columbian CHUPICUARO FACE BOWL. Circa 300 B.C. Click to View Image Album This is a superb Pre-Columbian CHUPICUARO FACE BOWL. Circa 300 B.C. 250 A.D. The ceramic style is named after the village of Chupícuaro in the western Mexican state of Guanajuato where it was found. Situated on the Lerma River the culture was active from about 300 BC to AD 250. During the same time Teotihuacán flourished. Luckily excavations of the site were conducted in 1946-7 revealing much of what we know today. In 1949 the Solís Dam was constructed. This led to the flooding of the area which today remains under a lake formed by this act. Chupícuaro ceramics were formed without the use of a potting wheel. The mastery of this hand-building skill is seen in the symmetry and form of the vessel. Many whole examples of this style of pottery ... moreremain intact due to the thickness of the vessel walls. This bowl is hand painted with the colors that were taken from natural elements and exhibits a stylized human face on one side. The textile-like geometric designs are typical of Chupícuaro pottery and are also found painted onto human figurines that were also abundantly made. The significance of the designs is unknown. This rare face bowl measures 4” high. 10 ½” wide and is in good condition aside from two 1” stress cracks at the upper edge and some natural abrasion and wear due to age and use. Pre-Columbian - Chupícuaro grater bowl
This is a very nicely shaped Chupícuaro grater bowl with sides that slope down from a broad rim to the rough. Cross-hatched surface at the bottom. The fairly deep incisions were used for grinding and grating peppers. The bowl is red slip on buff terracotta, the inside decorated with alternating bands of red and natural buff with a pattern circling at the halfway point that resembles a modified Greek key, an interesting artistic convergence in ceramics decoration occurring at a comparable time, but independently and halfway around the world. There is a red slip band encircling the exterior just below the rim, and the remaining exterior is natural buff terracotta. An endearing feature of this bowl is an indentation which exactly fits a fingertip(visible in the photograph) on the otherwise perfectly formed raised bottom. An error, or the ... moreartisans hallmark? The ceramic style is named after the village of Chupícuaro in the western Mexican state of Guanajuato. Located in the Guanajuato valley surrounded by the Sierra de Guanajuato and situated on the Lerma River the culture was active from about 500 BCE to 300 CE. Fortunately excavations of the site were conducted in 1946-7 revealing much of what we know today. In 1949 the Solís Dam was constructed. This led to the flooding of the area which today remains under a lake formed by this act. Chupícuaro ceramics. Condition: Some pockmarks in the interior. A very minor chip in the grating surface and a few minor chips in the rim. Otherwise in very good condition. Lg Pre-Columbian Pottery Fragment & Unknown Bowl w/ Rat or Mice Motif + Figurine
Here for your consideration is a mixed lot of Pre-Columbian and unknown period pottery. This lot is from a nice collection of authentic pre-Columbian artifacts. I know for certain that the large broken pottery fragment in this lot is pre-Columbian. But I have my doubts about the rat bowl and sitting figurine. The bowl is completely hand made and beautiful, but the condition of the surface seems to be too good. There is dirt in the creases along the rats and looks soiled within, but you'll have to be the judge on this piece. Seems raku fired. The figurine appears to have been possible in the process of restoration? It's a cool little piece, but I do not know the age and cannot guarantee when it was made, so you'll have to be the judge on it too. If you'd like to share your opinions on these two interesting pieces, I like to ... morehear them. The man that amassed the collection that these were a part of, had a thing for authenticity, so I don't think these would have been in his collection if they weren't of some importance. This lot being sold as is as described, no returns. Low opening bid no reserve.

Pre-Columbian - Chupícuaro ceremonial offering bowl
This terracotta Chupícuaro ceremonial offering bowl has an interesting abstract design arranged in a spiral on the sloping interior surface. This design has been executed in a type of negative painting technique where the buff substrate is an integral and intricate part of the pattern. Inside and out the rim is wrapped in a 1/2” band of red slip with a fire clouded underside accented by an undulating line. The ceramic style is named after the village of Chupícuaro in the western Mexican state of Guanajuato. Located in the Guanajuato valley surrounded by the Sierra de Guanajuato and situated on the Lerma River the culture was active from about 500 BCE to 250 CE. Luckily excavations of the site were conducted in 1946-7 revealing much of what we know today. In 1949 the Solís Dam was constructed. This led to the flooding of the ... morearea which today remains under a lake formed by this act. Chupícuaro ceramics were formed without the use of a potting wheel making the quality of their craftsmanship all the more remarkable. As observed by Richard E. W. Adams in his book Prehistoric Mesoamerica. There is no doubt that Chupícuaro represents an exuberant ceramic tradition in full flower. Dimensions: 4 ¾” diameter. 2” high. Condition: There is a compression fracture running across approx. 1/3 of the bowl culminating in some lost ceramic at one end point. There is also some red slip loss. Provenance- This item was recently obtained from the estate of the late Willis Pratt. A career academic at the University of Texas in Austin. Pre-Columbian - Chupícuaro decorated bowl
This buff terracotta Chupícuaro bowl has extremely interesting decoration. The interior is covered by a pattern of brown. Concentric shapes. From rim to rim there is a broad line of red slip bisecting this pattern at an angle. Surprisingly, this red slip line is transparent as the underlying brown pattern can clearly be seen through the red slip, almost like a highlighter. The rim is covered in red slip. Turning the bowl over, on the bottom you will see a similar although not as clear pattern of concentric lines bisected by another rim to rim broad band of transparent red slip. Curiously, the two bands of red slip do not line up in the cardinal directions but rather, if continued, would intersect each other at an angle.
