ANTIQUE c200BC-200AD PRE-COLUMBIAN COLIMA TERRACOTTA COATI & SNAKE JUG / PITCHER
Description This authentic genuine antique Pre-Columbian Colima(possibly Jalizco) 200BC-200AD terracotta pottery zoomorphic vessel jug. Is beautifully hand formed in red earthenware clay as a white nosed coati laying atop a large gourd with a small snake grasped in its claws, with the coati's head raised snarling and mouth open to act as the spout for pouring. There is a short filling spout to its back with small stirrup handle connecting the two. The front arms of the coati have applied ring armlets which appear on early Colima pottery human(gingerbread man) figures. All the details like protruding eyes, ears, flaring nostrils, fangs(teeth) front limbs, armlets, toes(claws) snake, gourd details and tail as well as spout and stirrup handle, are hand rolled/modelled and applied to the body of the vessel. This amazing dramatic piece has ... morea part hand burnished surface to the upper part(shoulder) of the gourd and to the filling spout and top of the strirrup handle. The protruding parts of the coati figure have acquired partial polish from handling. Much of the surface has encrusted calcification and deposits from burial. The vessel does have old very neat museum quality restoration to the gourd. Running as a faint line join across the back of the base and up the sides and travelling forward under the front limbs of the Coati, with repairs to the toes(claws) which lay on the gourd surface behind the snakes body and has one thumb missing. The restoration is hardly noticeable and does not have any over painting, just very accurately glued and filled along the line with suitably coloured material(please see photos) This wonderful piece came from a 19th century collection in an old local Norfolk Estate and has been in our own collection for several decades. Height 13cm. 5.1/8" length approx 13.5cm, 5.5/16" unpacked weight 550 grams. Pl ease email us should you have any queries. Payment We accept Pay-Pal. SUPERB Pre-Columbian CHANCAY Terracotta Standing Figure
SUPERB Pre-Columbian CHANCAY Terracotta Standing Figure, Click to view supersized image This is a magnificent original antique museum quality Pre-Columbian CHANCAY Terracotta Standing Figure. Peru. 1000 AD– 1450 AD. Unglazed earthenware figures such as this are typical of the Chancay. Particularly the wide flattened head. The Chancay apparently developed in relative isolation from Tihuanaco around 1200 along the central coast of Peru. The distinctive Chancay style consists of white-slipped ceramics with black-lined decoration. And an unusual primitiveness pervades Chancay ceramics. Human figures were common and were frequently dressed in elaborate textiles. This magnificent figure is beautifully decorated with dark brown/black paint on the head, face and hands. It is in original ancient condition with natural wear due to age, measures 10 ... more½” high and is mounted to a wooden base for a total height of 12” PROVENANCE: This item comes directly from the estate of a Beverly Hills Pre-Columbian collector and was legally imported into the United States over prior to 1970. Authenticity is GUARANTEED. Similar Chancay figures sell in galleries for over $3.500. Please scroll down on the item description to view additional photographs. Payment is due within 2 days. Pre-Columbian Terracotta 1923 William Niven Provenance! Mayan San Miguel Amantla
Two terra-cotta figures found at San Miguel Amantla in 1921. Includes a copy of the 1923 invoice. William Niven(1850–1937) was a Scottish mineralogist and archeologist. Who worked in the United States and Central America in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. During a prospecting tour for the American Museum of Natural History he discovered prehistoric ruins(later named Omitlán) northwest of Chilpancingo in the state of Guerrero, also the celebrated Placeres del Oro sepulcher in 1910. His Guerrero collections are now in the American Museum of Natural History, the Peabody Museum of Harvard University, and elsewhere. In 1911 Niven discovered ancient ruins buried beneath volcanic ash near Azcapotzalco just north of Mexico City. The following 20 years consisted of archeological exploration in the Valley of Mexico and through an arrangement ... morewith the Mexican government was able to fund his digging by the sale of artifacts. Niven established a private museum in Mexico City, later moved to Tampico. He recovered the first in a series of unusual stone tablets bearing pictographs from his digs at San Miguel Amantla, Azcapotzalco, and elsewhere in the Valley of Mexico in 1921. Niven was a founding member of the New York Mineralogical Club, an honorary life member of the American Museum of Natural History, a member of the Scientific Society Antonio Alzate in Mexico, and a fellow in the American Geographic Society of New York and the Royal Society of Arts in London.
