In the Nicoya P eninsula. Made by the ancient pre-Columbian civilization of the Chorotega people. Dating from 1000-1500 AD this incredible detailed piece measures10" in width and 9 ½" in height. The condition of the piece is superb with mild weathering of the surface as would be expected of an authentic piece of this age and minimal restoration to one leg(pleae see photo#6) The pictures are very clear and show the vessel as it appears. It was most likely used for drinking or burning ceremonial substances as other artifacts discovered in the same area were utilized. Very finely crafted. Long slender Mayan Jadeite bead, sourced in the Highlands of Guatemala. This amazing bead speaks to a level of craftsmanship that only the very early Indus Valley Cultures have equalled. Considering the technology at hand(which was that of sticks and abrasive powders) how does one make such a fine and delicate bead! The walls are thin, and the holes oversized. This allowed for maximizing the translucent quality of the jadeite. There is a little wear at one of the stringing holes, otherwise this wonderful and rare bead is in excellent condition. 25mm x 4mm. A very high quality. Large Protoclassic burnished terracotta Colima dog figure, from the Colima culture, dating to approximately 200 B.C. 200 A.D. Exhibiting a beautiful dark red colour. The plump beast stands on squat. Bent legs, with large round pot-belly, short, erect tail, pricked ears, exposed teeth and with male genitalia modeled on the underside of the creature. These enigmatic figures were produced in what is now Mexico from the 3rd Century B.C. Huffener, inspired by his father, also became immersed in the world of anti-fascist ... moreactivism. Come the start of the war, he began traveling the Netherlands, helping Jews escape Nazi-occupied Europe by providing them with forged papers, and hiding them from their persecutors. This incredible bravery and selflessness was documented in The Other Schindlers by Agnes Grunwald-Spier(2010) and Huffener was honoured by Yad Vashem as'Righteous Among the Nations' in 1998. His wartime contributions were also commemorated posthumously in March 2010, when Prime Minister Gordon Brown awarded him the Hero of the Holocaust medal for"the service of humanity. Huffener eventually moved to England in the 1950s. Establishing his own antiques business in 1959 in Albury, Surrey. Here, his knowledge and collections grew to encompass antiquities, ethnographic art, glass, paintings and fossils. Also noted for his restoration skills, Huffener was much respected in his field, coming to befriend Herbert Reiser, one of the world's leading collectors. It is 9cm hight. 4.5cm wide to the widest part at the edge, 1.7cm thick, made of calcite, light blue in color, no chips, there was a hairline crack near the right eye throught the hole but was filled with some white color substance(I think that was lime stone) after long time of burial. The whole item is covered with some tinny crystals that can't removed. It is a hard item to find in this conditions and compare to those asking for thousands. Ancient Pre - Columbian Chancay Culture Pottery Vessel - 1200 AD
A pre-Columbian(Chancay culture) earthenware bottle or jar. This ovoid vessel with a flaring neck and arched handles has two appliquéd pods attached to one of its handles. The cream slipped body is decorated with a series of vertical brown bands. Most Chancay vessels display an elementariness of form and the seemingly spontaneous application of painted decoration as shown in this piece. Little is known of the Chancay society. But evidence indicates that it represented a small regional state made up of several ethnic groups inhabiting the coasts, desert lands and valleys of central Peru between 1000-1435 A.D. The Chancay are best known for their astonishing and unique craftsmanship that valued a high level of personalisation in decorative style. Producing woodworks. Textiles and ceramics, Chancay style artefacts are prevalent across central ... morePeru. This enigmatic society traded their goods widely with other regions either by land towards the Peruvian highlands and jungle or by sea to the north and south of their borders. As such, though the society does not appear to have wielded significant political power, the skill of their craftsmen appears to have been respected and admired. The artisan who produced this piece would have been under the control of the local kuraka(clan leader) Who regulated the production activities of the various specialists, farmers and festive activities within his community. Ancient Pre - Columbian Chancay Culture Pottery Lama Vessel - 1200 AD
A published and exhibited pre-Columbian(Chancay culture) earthenware figure in the form of a llama. Dating to 1000- 1435 A.D. This hollow figure of a llama stands on four stubby legs. With the large egg shaped body acting as a humorous counterpoint to the undersized head. The doe eyed facial expression conveys a sense of almost child-like naivety, the ears have been pierced and would likely have been further decorated in antiquity. Most Chancay vessels display an elementariness of form and the seemingly spontaneous application of painted decoration as shown in this piece. Though its specific purpose is now a mystery. It is possible that such vessels were made as toys for children. Little is known of the Chancay society. But evidence indicates that it represented a small regional state made up of several ethnic groups inhabiting the coasts, ... moredesert lands and valleys of central Peru between 1000-1435 A.D. The Chancay are best known for their astonishing and unique craftsmanship that valued a high level of personalisation in decorative style. Producing woodworks. Textiles and ceramics, Chancay style artefacts are prevalent across central Peru. This enigmatic society traded their goods widely with other regions either by land towards the Peruvian highlands and jungle or by sea to the north and south of their borders. As such, though the society does not appear to have wielded significant political power, the skill of their craftsmen appears to have been respected and admired. The artisan who produced this piece would have been under the control of the local kuraka(clan leader) Who regulated the production activities of the various specialists, farmers and festive activities within his community. A charming piece of pre-Columbian art. Condition: Very good. Some minor restoration to right hind quarter. It has been perforated in the middle of the back during antiquity.
