Coming from an important mid-West collection of African art, it is guaranteed authentic and would make a fine addition to any collection of Zulu art or African art in general. In Zulu. Ukhamba consists of two words: ukukhama(which means to squeeze out or compress out as in milking a cow) + bamba(to hold in place so as to receive that which is squeezed out) The ukhamba is a vessel, a reservoir, and a protector of that which is valuable and good for physical and spiritual nourishment. It is a central piece in the rite of social fellowship and that rite itself is treated with respect and studied deference. The clay pot is made out of earth, and symbolizes the Eternal Mother and womb from which all emerge and gets buried in order for others to emerge. The clay pot gives shape to its liquid contents and this means the shaping of all human knowledge by a lived life on earth. Ukhamba pots are formed by building up coils of clay and smoothing them down with items such as the back of a spoon or a water-worn rock. The pot is put to one side until it has reached leather-hardness. Up for bids is this rare figural erotic stirrup-spout vessel. Possibly Moche(North Peru) culture, circa 500- 750 AD. I am not 100% sure this is a genuine ancient Moche pot, but I did the smell test by wetting the surface: the water disappeared quickly into the surface and it reeked very typically musky and earthy. Also it took about 3 days before the pottery was dry again. The m ale figure shows old crack repairs with bitumen or tar at his right leg. Right shoulder and side of his body. The left hand of the female figure similarly shows a bitumen/tar repair. I leave it to the connaisseurs and collectors of Pre-Columbian pottery to decide. This is an authentic pre-Colombian black on white ceramic vessel flute from the late Chancay culture(1200-1450 AD) It measures 4" X 2" X 1.5" Made from a red terracotta with white slip background and decorated with a black slip. It is in the shape of what could be a llama painted to look like it has a blanket on it's back(I have seen pictures of more elaborate llama figurines that actually had a spotted and striped textile blanket draped over their back) To me it almost looks like it could be a Lowland Paca as well(although a llama seems to make more sense) The flute has just a single hole and works similar to blowing air into a bottle except you blow from directly above instead of at an angle as with a bottle. It produces a very clear pleasing note. No repairs. The scribe characters form even lines and circle pattern, only the bottom of the spout and the bottom of the stirrup have no signs. In addition, dimples were applied to form a geometric shape, triangles or squares. The knobs are probably eyes, pointing in the four cardinal directions, long before the Incas divided their kingdom in four directions! The scribe characters look like scars from the pimples like suction cups octopus. The vessel body was broken and was assembled professionally. I just pickup from local estate amazing Peruvian Vessel"Dragon" It was sold as a most likely original Chavin. I am not an expert in Precolumbian Art and can't guarantee authenticity. But a I can see a few positive marks to be real antique: definitely Chavin Style; a good looks very real patina; dry ceramic and made using antique ceramic technology; some restoration(the Dragon tale was restored- see picture) But again it is not a professional opinion.
