Jaguar Effigy Metate. Costa Rica. Atlantic Watershed region, c.300-700 AD, Volcanic stone(Andesite) with a nice brown-orange patina. This stone metate was used to grind corn and other foods used in religious ceremonies. Metates were symbolic of the all-important cycle of life as represented by agriculture. The grinding of corn took on special meanings of both agricultural success and fertility. It is also speculated that metates were seats used by religious or political leaders. This metate is exceptional for both its sculptural quality. This ceremonial metate carved from volcanic stone represents one of the most unusual traditions of the ancient Americas. It features the head of a jaguar at one end, with the metate itself making up the body of the animal. The rectangular surface is framed with an incised scalloped motif. Geometric reliefs adorn its tripod legs. Most impressive is the attention to the jaguar head. We see both naturalism in the physiognomic contouring of the head and at the same time abstract linear markings to denote whiskers and coat. What's more, the artist successfully captured the ferocity of the beast with a snarling grimace of threatening teeth. Some metates were used as grinding slabs, while others showing more ... moreintricate designs were intended for ritualistic ceremonies and as burial offerings. It has also been suggested that some metates were actually used as thrones for rulers to sit on. The decorative program of this metate suggests a ceremonial function. It is approximately 2 1/4" tall. 3 1/2" long and 1 3/4" across the bowl. It is in excellent condition with a nice earthen patina and no repairs. For your Bidding Consideration in this Auction is a Pre-Colombian Figural CEREMONIAL VESSEL from the Tairona culture which was in the Northern part of Magdalena in the Region of the Sierra Nevada of Santa Marta. This object was CONSIDERD TO BE ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT POSSESSIONS of this culture. The Vase is an ovoid shaped vessel. With strap handle, resting on 4 short, bent legs. One of the most prominent characteristics of this sort of vessel from this Culture is the decorated and rich black color. This highly decorated type of vessel was used in Ceremonies commemorating the dead and would have been used to hold various personal effects, and/ or gifts to the dead, including gold, jewelry, flowers, etc. Located at the end of each handle is the head of a Jaguar typically denoted by the culture with small eyes, narrow nose and thin long mouth. ... moreSometimes also considered as a Bat. Late Classic or Post-Classic Mayan or Vera Cruz Culture- Circa 250 AD- 1200 AD. El Salvador or Mexico. A number of these wheeled pieces are known and are thought to date from the Classic to Late Post-Classic Mayan Period(250 AD- 1200 AD) Various attributions for similar objects are to the Olmec. Mayan, Toltec, and Vera Cruz cultures, so maybe they were made by a number of cultures. It seems that it is not known whether these wheeled pieces were made as children’s toys, ceremonial effigies, or had some ... moreother purpose. Probably ceremonial, possibly burial pieces. This piece is hand-made and has all four wheels. It is in the form of a jaguar. With a long tail, upright ears, a detailed face and an open mouth. The piece appears to have four original wheels, but the axles(sticks) have been replaced since the original wood would long ago have deteriorated. There are traces of red paint on the face. The surfaces show. In addition to some traces of paint, darkening, light encrustation, old wear to the rolling surfaces of the wheels, and an overall aged darkened patina. There are several archeological or collection markings to the underside of the jaguar. As you can see in the photographs. This piece was purchased at a Butterfield and Butterfield auction in San Francisco about 20 years ago and was part of an old collection being sold. I bought it from the purchaser shortly after he obtained it from the auction house. It has been in my own collection since 1994. An image search on google for“precolumbian toy” will bring up quite a bit of information about similar pieces. AGE: Circa 250 AD- 1200 AD. Mayan or Vera Cruz(probably) CONDITION: Good condition.
