A very uncommon and neat looking pre-Spanish contact(pre-Columbian) Moche culture ceramic stylized Female-shaped whistle wearing a bold head dress or hat. From coastal Peru, dating from about 100 to 800 AD, more or less. T he condition is mostly good. Showing great age and wear overall, about 55 mm(over 2 inches) in length, about 13 mm tall when viewed from the side and 26 mm(about one inch) at the widest part. The left part of the hat has a fracture that appears to have been repaired The Moche culture was very creative in various art forms, especial figural and sculpture works. It's 1 7/8 in. 4.5cm) tall. 1 5/8 in. 4.0cm) wide and 7/8 in. 2.2cm) thick. It's nicely made of fired tan clay(terracotta) and in very good condition. This one has deep-set punctate eyes, prominent nose, non-descript mouth and thick brow above the eyes. The lack of ornamentation, earspools, headdress, necklace, etc. and the heavy, thick brow indicate this is a monkey personification. It may have represented a deceased family pet. It was broken from a larger solid figure thousands of years ago. These clay human and animal figures were broken apart and thrown into fields in a ritual that was supposed to ensure crop fertility. MOCHE COPPER MORTUARY FIGURE, PERU CA, 100 - 800 AD
A copper mortuary figure of a warrior from the Moche culture of ancient Peru. Ca. 100- 800 AD. The figure with a heavy verdigris and earthen patina is in a sitting position, he holds a shield in his right hand and a tumi head axe in his left. He wears a necklace of round beads, and circular earspools both having corrosion losses. On his head he wears a half spherical metal helmet with an attached large plume structure. 10" 25.5cm) tall, 6" 15.2cm) at the widest, and 3" 7.6cm) front to back. SquareTrade © AP6.0 Here's a very nice HUMAN EFFIGY FIGURE of the HUASTEC CULTURE Classic Period(ca; 200-900 AD) from Mexico's Coastal Lowlands near Vera Cruz. It's 1 3/4 in. 4.3cm) tall. 1 1/8 in. 2.8cm) wide and 3/4 in. 2.0cm) thick. It's very nicely made of fired tan clay(terracotta) and in excellent condition. These ancient terracotta figures were common everyday items in these Middle-American Pre-Columbian cultures. This one has punctate eyes, flat nose and small mouth. It has both earspools, a necklace and a fancy hair style. It was broken from a larger figure thousands of years ago. The fragments were thrown into rivers, sinkholes and fields in the hope of ensuring crop fertility, or as offerings to the gods. SquareTrade © AP6.0 Here's an unusual Aztec ZOLAPAN STYLE CLAY FIGURE. Ca: 900- 1100 AD found many years ago near the Teotihuacan Pyramids in Mexico's Central Highlands. It's 2 3/4 in. 6.8cm) tall. 1 7/8 in. 4.7cm) wide and 1 1/2 in. 3.7cm) thick. This is a nicely modeled hollow figure having carefully made delicate features, sculptured eyes, nose and mouth. He also wears a large stone"yoke" around the neck, a type worn by ball players! There's a large hole through the chest which was likely made by pushing a stick through the wet clay before firing. This was likely a ritual killing of an image of an enemy, or athletic rival, much like a voodoo killing in a modern context. Zolapan figures were almost always devoid of headdresses and earspools, as is this one. As is it's in excellent condition. SquareTrade © AP6.0 Here's a seldom offered. Very nice, small MICHOACAN VILLAGE CULTURE CLAY FIGURE. Ca: 500-100 BC, found many years ago in Mexico's Western Highlands. It's tiny. Only 1 5/8 in. 4.2cm) tall, 5/8 in. 1.6cm) wide and 7/16 in. 1.1cm) thick. It's a detailed modeled figure with carefully made appliqued delicate features, including coffee-bean eyes, prominent nose, coffee bean mouth and a pair of"Groucho Marx" eyebrows. There are two intact earspools, a fancy necklace and a nice hairdo. It's nicely made of fired tan clay(terracotta) which was painted with a red pigment, much of which remains. Michoacán figures were typically covered with this red color. There's a site location printed on the back which I can't completely make out. It may be"Cuauhtitlan" which may refer to ... morea Toltec site in western Mexico. It's a nice example of a scarce MICHOACAN figure type.
