PRE-COLUMBIAN CERAMIC PIECE Tumaco Colombia
This is a reproduction of an original piece from the Tumaco culture. Which flourished between 500 BC and about 500 AD in what is the Pacific coastal area of southwestern Colombia. This piece represents the head of an Indian woman, intentionally separated from the body as part of a funeral rite. The ceremony had the implicit connotation, that when a human being dies, so does his control of thoughts and the mind. The artistic expression in these figures is realistic, keeping individual physical features, and becoming a living portrait. This particular woman wears a delicate headpiece, her large earrings in flower shape symbolize her capacity to'listen to others' and in her nose a beautiful gold'nariguera' that was used as a constant reminder of'el peso de la palabra' or the weight of our words, and the responsibility ... moreto use them wisely. The shape of the head, considered a trait of beauty, reveals the custom in this group of binding and molding the form of the skull while young. Little is known about these cultures that occupied the area in and near Colombia. The Tumaco and Tolita groups lived on what is today the Colombia/Ecuador border. And their civilizations flourished and faded from 500 BC to about 500 AD. As other groups from Colombia, they were excellent goldsmiths and ceramists, the pieces that have survived are of extraordinary beauty, and interesting in their diferences from other groups. Pieces are characteristically peaceful and serene in expression, and colors are a softer gray, due to the ash content of the clay in that region. As always, because of the abundance of gold in the area, once the Spaniards arrived, whole groups were wiped out to loot the treasures. This group's high point was long before this arrival, but much was lost from burial grounds that could have given clues to their existence. The legend of El Dorado fueled more and more exploration. Even today, burial grounds can be discovered and pillaged, leaving little to study. Ceramics that remain today are from t

Large Ancient Pre Columbian Nazca Ceramic Face Collar Jar - 250 AD
A well provenanced. Very large, artistic and vibrant ancient Peruvian Earthenware jug from the Nazca culture, dating to approximately 250- 540 A.D. The large ovoid vessel in the form of a rotund hunter. The piece with rounded base. Globular body and short cylindrical neck. The neck decorated with a human face, shown with almond shaped eyes, the nose and mouth modeled and the long black hair protruding from underneath a painted cap. The stylised hands of the figure appearing from underneath a decorative shawl. A particularly interesting and accomplished example of the ancient potters art. Here we see a large. Spherical vessel skillfully painted and modeled to adopt the form and character of a plump male. Remarkable use of perspective. The ancient Nazca culture. Located on the Southern coast of Peru, existed from 370 B.C. through to 540 A.D. ... moreThe period saw much development of the arts, perhaps most notably in the area of slip painting, as is evidenced by this piece. Pre-Columbian PANAMA Bowl Loop Handle 8"diam Ceramic TONOSI Elegant POSTPAID!!!
A TONOSI Culture Ceramic Bowl or Vessel with elegant loop handle. A typical design for this region but this one is elegant in style, from the Azuero Peninsula of PANAMA; it has dark orange paint on the the entire body of the vessel. Only the top part of the handle and inside the handle were left with natural earthtone color; measures 6-1/2" high at the handle and 8" diameter(NOT THE SMALL SIZED ONE) Dates from 1000 to 1500 AD. There is light damage- 2 very small rim chips at the opening and there is what looks like a scrape at the front(visible in the photo) but that actually might have happened in the making of the piece. It is hard to see in person. The lighting made shadows. This is a very graceful piece that comes my own personal collection. This item is an authentic artifact of the Pre-Columbian Culture. Pre-Columbian Chancay Ceramic Llama Vessel Flute Ocarina
This is an authentic pre-Colombian black on white ceramic vessel flute from the late Chancay culture(1200-1450 AD) It measures 4" X 2" X 1.5" Made from a red terracotta with white slip background and decorated with a black slip. It is in the shape of what could be a llama painted to look like it has a blanket on it's back(I have seen pictures of more elaborate llama figurines that actually had a spotted and striped textile blanket draped over their back) To me it almost looks like it could be a Lowland Paca as well(although a llama seems to make more sense) The flute has just a single hole and works similar to blowing air into a bottle except you blow from directly above instead of at an angle as with a bottle. It produces a very clear pleasing note. No repairs. Cracks or other major condition issues(just the wear expected ... moreon an object of great age, see"condition description" This is from an old collection(pre-1970's)
