Large Native American Southwestern Animal Effigy Clay Pottery - Decorator Piece
This clay vessel depicts several animal effigies. This is a large. Skillfully crafted, Southwestern style, clay artwork in the form of a vessel depicting several animal effigies. There are no cracks or chips and other than the paint being faded, it is in perfect, original condition. This is a large piece, standing over 12 inches tall and almost 12 inches wide. It is the perfect decorator piece to compliment fine, Southwestern or Meso-American decor. I inherited this collection and am not an expert. This is a great piece of rare Chimu art with two birds looking over their shoulder. There appears to be a tiny monkey sitting against the spout. Authentic piece of Pre Columbian pottery vessel with unusual form. Good condition with the usual surface scratches. There is a small 1 inch chip or crack behind one bird' swing but not full thickness. The black ware seems enhanced by a brownish tint in places on the glaze. Great collectors item from Peru. This is a really cute llama effigy or incense burner Pre Columbian pottery vessel made by an ancient Mexico region culture. The Jalisco culture, dating from 200BC to 300AD. It has really nice shape and geometric patterns on it. There is fading of the paint and glaze but you still can make them out and the red slip, is strong. Large chimney makes me think maybe used as incense vessel, but it was entombed and buried at some point. Lots of good manganese deposits and maybe root markings. I think it is a llama. The slight turn at the top of the spout places it in the Moche II Period. Body markings are meticulously hand painted in cream on red ground. The llama carries a pack bag or water bag given the bulbous plug on one end that's slung over its back. Its head is strongly modeled with deep set eyes, perky ears, and flaring nostrils. There is a painted symbol on its forehead. The artist even took the time to add incised detailing to the underside delineating the llamas kneeling hooved legs. Marvellous manganese blooms to boot. Up for auction we have a wonderful piece of Pre-Columbian Peruvian pottery. Beautiful Moche figural effigy jar that show two figures holding a bound nude male prisoner. Stirrup spout handle protrudes from the back of this orange-ware vessel. Incised raised features. Tan slip on body and reddish/brown slip on figures and handle. A very elegant and unique piece of ancient pottery. Size: 7-3/4" Tall and 4-1/2" at its widest. Culture: Moche. Peru Circa: 100AD-700AD Some very slight surface wear and paint loss as to be expected of pieces this old. Small stress crack on face of large figure(see picture#5) Complete and in great museum condition. This displays really well. And some information found on the Long Island University Museum site: Stirrup Spout Vessels were the predominant ceramic form throughout the Pre-Columbian Peruvian region ... morefrom the earliest cultures beginning around 1000 BCE until the conquest of the Inca in the 15th century. Evidence of the slipware glaze decoration is all over the piece. Especially on one side, where color concentric circles can be seen. The lip of the opening in the top has some wear and a little loss, but no repairs are evident. This is a particularly attractive piece of ancient. The Colima dogs were a breed used for sacrifice and were also part of the diet. Vessels like this were used in burials, as that is where most of them were discovered.
