PRE-COLUMBIAN ART; INVESTIGATIONS AND INSIGHTS by Hildegard Delgado Pang
PRE-COLUMBIAN ART; INVESTIGATIONS AND INSIGHTS by Hilda Delgado Pang. Published by University of Oklahoma Press, 1992. From the dust jacket: This profusely illustrated. Up-to-date introduction to the pre-columbian art of Mesoamerica and Andean South America examines our conceptions of the ancient high cultures, the art they produced, and how our modern day interpretations were achieved. The book is unique in that it draws on a great variety of scholarly disciplines to interpret the art forms. Since the 1960s our understanding of the Aztec. Maya, Inca, and Andean civilizations has increased dramatically through coordinated interdisciplinary research. In this summary of new and past investigations, Hilda Delgado Pang describes previously unknown historical figures and dynasties. In a clear and entertaining style, she tells how the pre-columbian ... moreartists validated their rulers, recorded rituals, portrayed the supernatural and astromical cosmos, and commemorated transitions from life to death. As she describes the Mesoamerican and Andean high cultures, she also explains the special role that art plays in all societies. This book measures approx. 11" x 8.75" x 1" And is in brand new condition. After 25 years in the antiques trade we have closed our business and are selling part of our library of reference books. Classic period(200 B.C. 200 A.D. flat, standing, nude females(which can be seen on the internet by searching for"Precolumbian Colima sculpture" except that this one has a huge mons and buttocks. Other features include: otherwise flat profile; small breasts; pouty. Open lips; stylized. Minimalist face; ear rings; hair in 2 buns on top of head; thick neck; broad shoulders; truncated hands and feet; and orange clay color slightly mottled from uneven heat in firing and/or age(particularly visible on the back) 2) Dimensions. 6 inches high(about 16 centimeters) 3) Condition. Mint. Pristine, museum quality. 4) Provenance. I bought this sculpture in 1967 ... morefrom a source I trusted who I met in the home of my friend Kurt Stavenhagen in Mexico City when I was an anthropology student at the Universidad de las Americas. Kurt Stavenhagen was a Wikipedia-worthy collector of Precolumbian sculpture to whom I was introduced by Ferdinand Anton- a German anthropologist and photographer who filmed my family exploring the Maya ruins of Chichen Itza in 1964 for a movie he made for Time/ Life Magazines and German television which compared modern art. Such as Picasso and Henry Moore, with ancient art like the Maya. I also studied how to distinguish an authentic precolumbian sculpture from a fake: 1) provenance; know the source; 2) study precolumbian anthropology; see what's in the museums and the books; 3) lick. Or otherwise wet, the object and see how long it takes to dry; ancient ceramics take a long time to dry because they are more porous than new ceramics. 5) Shipping. No charge for a U.S. address.

Precolumbian sculpture 41, Teotihuacán art turbn,pre-columbian Mexican sculpture
Precolumbian head from Teotihuacán. Mexico, 41(1) Precolumbian. Sculpted, ceramic head; most likely 500 A.D. or older(That is 1,000 years or more before Cortez invaded Mexico and conquered the Aztecs. The Aztecs, who arrived in the Valley of Mexico long after Teotihuacán was abandoned, named the ruins Teotihuacán- place of the gods. The Aztecs and the Greeks had the same word for gods- teo. 2) Dimensions. approximately 1 inch by 1" by half an inch" I apologize for not providing metric dimensions. I live in a country that clings to ancient English measuring systems instead of the clearly superior and much more functional metric system. 3) Medium. clay. Hard fired under great heat. 4) Provenance. I found this head(and other heads) in a farmer's field near the center of the ruins of Teotihuacán. Near Mexico ... moreCity, in 1966 or 1967, when I was an anthropology student at the Universidad de las Americas in Mexico City. Generally, these farmers' fields were rocky and dusty but rain would wash the dust off the rocks and reveal that some of them had faces- and were terracotta heads and not rocks. Many times, after a rain, I would take a bus from Mexico City to Teotihuacán, explore the farmers' fields, and look for those features that were not visible when covered with dust. In this way, I acquired dozens of precolumbian heads. How to distinguish an authentic precolumbian sculpture from a fake: 1) provinance; know the source; 2) study precolumbian anthropology; see what's in the museums and the books; 3) lick. Pre Columbian San Blas Kuna Indian Panama vintage mola San Blas Indian folk art
Beatuiful example of a vintage folk art specific to the Kuna Natives of the San Blas Islands off the Atlantic roast of Central Panama. This Mola. Is an example of the creative back stitching decoration of cloth pieces specific to these Natives for many years. The Kunas live on a collection of over 350 small Islands a boat ride off the Atlantic coast of Panama. This has now become a world wide collectible art work that has gone on unchanged. All types of items, cloth, clothing etc. are created. Often they are framed in a double frame with a cloth or beige gunny sack like fabric as a matting between the outer frame and inner frame. This piece was made around 1960 and I bought a number of others when I lived in Panama. The colors have remained brilliant. Antique Pre Columbian reproduction wood carved Tumi, artifact, relic art, clay
This is a wonderful old wood hand carved decorative tumi figure made by a local artisan in Cuzco. Peru. This Pre Columbian artifact replica is represented as the kind of artifact that many Peruvians have hanging in their homes much as we might hang a crucifix or a political figure photo in a government building. The tumi has symbolic and practical meaning for Incas and indigenous population in Peru. It was used in rituals, sacrifice, in surgery and any number of cutting tasks. Usually made of bronze or stone it was also produced in pounded flat copper tumi replicas for currency, or as collectibles. They have now become very popular as a collectors item of Pre Columbian Peruvian artifacts and reminders of ritual usage in ceremonies and inca sacrifices of llamas, but also children and their enemies. This wooden one would be an in home decor. ... moreMost tumis had decorative figures on the handle end opposite the curved relic blade. There are inlaid mirrors, and green semiprecious stones for eyes but I am not sure what material. One arm was broken and repaired and the seam can be seen on the reverse. Loop to hang with. A very classic icon for Latin home decor. CA about 1940- 1950s. Culture: Peru, indigenous descendants of Inca. 30 inches tall, 10 inches wide, about an inch thick. A dramatic piece. Pre Columbian Mayan pottery rattle, ritual, artifact, relic art COA
Really cute rare authentic Pre Columbian Mayan pottery artifact ceremonial or ritual rattle. Stand goes with it. This Mayan piece is nicely proportioned and a cute artistic artifact. Pre Columbian cultures often used music with strings. Flutes, rattles, and rattle vessels in rituals and ceremonies and the Mayans too. I am not sure if the rattles might also be placed in tombs to scare away bad spirits. They would be shaken for sound. There are lots of Pre Columbian pottery flutes around but not many of these rattles. Some minor surface scratching on pottery with some white spots. Purchased from Artemis Gallery. Dealers in ancient and pre Columbian art, and COA available on request. Great piece for conversation and it works. I am sure not meant as baby rattle but more as later maracas for rhythmic music or to ward off spirits in ceremonies ... moreor in burials. Ht. 5 inches. Width is 1 inch. A little guy but unusual and will enhance a collection. Culture Mayan CA 500 AD Provenance Artemis Gallery dealer in antiquities and having an auction coming in March. Pre Columbian Chancay death rattle pottery, artifact, relic, art, COA
Rare Chancay artifact of a woman on death rattle ceremonial piece. From central Costa Rican culture and used in death rituals. It rattles when shaken. Good paint and comes with its own stand. Authentic piece comes with COA if requested. I bought this from Artemis Gallery who sell and deal in antiquities. Authentic item. It's something I have not seen before. Pre Columbian Chimu erotic vessel, pottery, artifact, relic, antique, pot, art
Pre Columbian black ware piece with very acceptable erotica for collectors and viewers. Like many early cultures the Chimus were unabashed in displaying sexuality in their art. There are name examples and can be both very explicit and/ or grossly distorted images. This piece features a re long couple. Thr man seems to want to keep his hat on.but not his boots. Well carved but there are expected surface scratching and a few splotches that do not detract. A nice change up for collectors. Culture: Chimu. Non Pre Columbian beads necklace, Ecuador folk art, pottery, artifact, tagua,
Striking beautiful Tagua nut natural seed beads dyed and sculpted into wonderful shapes as the locals have done for hundreds of years. They are made by the native population and sold at markets. We know this bead as pine ivory and it will be made and colored with a rainbow of dyes. Tagua is a large fruit with a big nut or seed which can be made for local ornaments. I bought thus near Otavalo market. In Cotacachi, Ecuador. This is a great big bead piece that will serve you or your woman as an introduction to any group. Good conversation. Good decor. Inca Treasures Pre Columbian Jalisco pottery, figures artifacts, art, COA
Great pre Columbian seated couple in two figures. This is a wonderful pair seated together with stoic poses. Jalisco couples are rare to fid and great collectors items. I purchased them from Minerva Gallery that sells Pre a Columbian art and other lovely antiquities and they are authentic. They come from an old culture in Western Mexico. I am not sure what could have happened to the man's right shoulder. Possibly he is deformed but likely it represents a style of Jalisco anatomical depiction or it shows the problems with body proportion seen in much Pre Columbian art. Culture: Jalisco. Inca Treasures Ltd Pre Columbian bead, necklace artifact stones, pottery, art
Beautiful necklace made from authentic pre Columbian stones. Earrings matched to go. The stones seem to possibly be Mayan but I am not certain of the culture. The bottom three in photo are all carved with design but two are flipped over in picture so only one seems to be decorated. Just turn it over. This is a wonderful set combining ancient stones with modern items for a wearable piece. All are authentic pre Columbian stones and made for wear. Terrific conversation piece. This is from a collection distributed by Inca Treasures LTD called Encore by Design: Wearing History. They are designer beads combining new and ancient elements meant to be worn now. Handsome arrangement of antique native clay beads with a pre Columbian stone pendant. This is another combination of old and new together for a sharp wearable piece. The other spacers and restrung clasps are all new as is the cord. The stones are lovely pastel shades and easy to look at with a simply stated elegance. The colored clay stones are probably North American. About 1-200 years old and the stone is Pre Columbian, but I don't know the culture but likely 500-1000 years old. SALE Inca Treasures Ltd Pre Columbian Inca figural ocarina pottery, artifact art
This is a very nice representation of a pre Columbian Inca Figural pottery flute/ocarina artifact. In the shape of a ruler figure. It still has about 4 to 5 clear great notes or tones when played. Better than my whistling. I purchased online and cannot be certain it is authentic. It was represented to be. It appears old with black clouds on surface and earthy pungent smell when inside dampened. This goes along with being authentic. I don't see manganese deposits but they are often missing depending where they were. I think it may be authentic or a very old replica nicely done. A great conversation piece. There is a marking on the back. I don't know it it significant or a mark from the artist. Since I cannot guarantee this is not a replica. I am reducing to a low SALE price but the work is great and it appears genuine. It does not ... morelook like a tourist reproduction. So buy as is and you can check further if it actually is real, then you have a nice item at a very reasonable price and plays music too. Culture Inca Culture.
