They are best known for their distinctive monochromatic pottery and fine metal work. The main types of Chimú ceramics are small sculptures, manufactured molded and shaped pottery for daily use and those made for ceremonial use for offerings at burials. While the pitcher has all the trademarks of pre-Columbian/Columbian pottery we are not certain of its origins or age. The spout/top is surrounded by what looks like a monkey whose head and arms are on one side and whose legs and tail are beneath the handle. The pitcher/ewer is approximately 4-1/2 inches tall. 3-1/2 inches at the widest(head to handle) and 3 inches wide(without handle) There is a small chip out of the rim and a hole in the side(see photos) Please note that we are not experts and describe these items to the best of our abilities. May be some candle wax residue in bowl. There was a fair amount of dust on this item when it was photographed and shows especially on the jagged rim of the bowl. ADDED DETAILS: This is an unusual piece depicting a 4-legged figure with a bowl/vessel on its back. The face is typical for the region-slit eyes. Beaked nose and broad spool ears. The high headress becomes part of the razor-jagged-edge of the bowl. The bowl is broad and deep and is dark. Possibly from incense or small ceremonial burnings. The figure is female/male showing breast and penis. There are faint decorative markings visible randomly throughout. Please view photos ... morecarefully for detail. A Fine Pre Columbian Peru Inca Pottery Vessel w/ Zoomorphic Decoration ca. 1400 AD. The vessel with spotted Feline handles and the body decorated with avian and geometric decoration in black and rust over cream background. I recently did a storage cleanout. Where I found a lot of very old pottery and art, these two pieces were wrapped together, and inside the one of them was a piece of paper that says, your candle container is a pre Columbian pril que cup used as a drinking vessel, the vase was to cook in circa 900AD signed tim and patty, I don't know much about pottery but this guy had a lot of it, so I am guessing these are what it is said to be.

The cream slipped body is decorated with a series of vertical brown bands. Most Chancay vessels display an elementariness of form and the seemingly spontaneous application of painted decoration as shown in this piece. Little is known of the Chancay society. But evidence indicates that it represented a small regional state made up of several ethnic groups inhabiting the coasts, desert lands and valleys of central Peru between 1000-1435 A.D. This is a great Moche stirrup portrait vessel. Made in Peru by the Moche Culture that antededed the Incas. They were prolific artisans. This vessel has checkerboard geometric patterns with Cross shapped glyphs on it. There appears to be a few clear mineral deposits but overall there are not a lot or root markings. The piece is guraranteed authentic and was bought from Artemis Gallery who deals with antiquities. COA is available on request. This is a beautiful large intact authentic Colima melon vessel. Trimmed with ribbed sides and fluted or flared rim and tripod legs. Terrific condition for this item. This is a striking piece of brown ware pottery from Chupicraro culture. Western Mexico. It is possibly from Colima or Nayarit cultures of Mexico. It is intact and good condition. Rounded bottom and flared rim. Rim has four decorative small carvings. There are good manganese deposits and root marks and a good earthy smell when inside is wetted. There are charming smoke clouds from the uneven glazing and shadings blending from black. Brown, tan and gray colors. I bought this from a collector that was not sure of the exact culture but it is authentically pre Columbian work with nice rounded lines. CA 500BC- 200 AD Diameter 8 inches. The Tairona culture lived north of what is now Ecuador, in Columbia. It is a single color and the glazing seems splotchy with wear in less its a tarnished effect. This is a really nice Nazca culture kero. Or vase vessel with rounded bottom. Slight concave body with slight flare to rim It has alligator head designs and almost appears the design is circle being held up by painted legs. Nazcas lived in Southern Peru coast long before Incas arrived. A polychrome piece with great vibrance and good glaze. Stable crack repaired inside and a frpew areas where paint wearing. Great figure of authentic Pre Columbian terra cota figure of what appears to be a warrior with shield. It has been noted he may be a ball player because he is in act of throwing what may be a ball. However the ball games in much of Mexico were played with a larger ball and with the shield I believe he is warrior. Throwing a rock. In any event, he is in action. Very nice Pre Columbian Tairona olla vessel with decorated patterns at the top by rim. It is one color with a nice fat body and slightly flaired rim. Good earthy smell when wetted inside. I had it looked at and it is authentic. Solid stable piece with round bottom and displays well on a stand. Nice piece for a beginning collector priced well to start and leave room for a resale. A lovely piece of Inca art with a bichrome stirrup vessel figure of a beggar drinking. Great coloring still though there some scratches and variations in color and glaze. Some due to uneven heat in kiln. Good manganese mineral deposits and there are root markings. Typical form of vessels from Inca culture with cream and red colors on stirrup vessels. No cracks I can see and the colors are still vibrant. The bottom is very dark I believe from the firing. May have been a ceremonial. Burial or effigy artifact. A tribute to a poor man. This is a great piece of rare Chimu art with two birds looking over their shoulder. There appears to be a tiny monkey sitting against the spout. Authentic piece of Pre Columbian pottery vessel with unusual form. Good condition with the usual surface scratches. There is a small 1 inch chip or crack behind one bird' swing but not full thickness. The black ware seems enhanced by a brownish tint in places on the glaze. Great collectors item from Peru. The Chimus came along just before the Incas and were defeated by the Incas but left wonderful art. Ht. 9 inches. Width and length 6 inches.
