FERTILITY HEAD/FEMALE FIGURE. CHUPICUARO PRE-COLUMBIAN. WESTERN MEXICO Length: 2 1/2" Width: 1 3/4" Thick: 1/2" Weight: 8 oz This Pre-Columbian ... moreFemale Fertility Effigy comes from the Mexican state of Jalisco. It was part of a major 19th century collection assembled by an American banker. The ancient Chupicuaro devoted their time and skills to creating pottery figurines. And other small artifacts. Characteristically flat. Chupícuaro human figurines can also be realistically three dimensional or shaped into vessels. They are distinguished by their slanted, coffee-bean shaped eyes. The figurines are typically depicted as female, indicated by a part in the center of the hair or headdress, and can be fashioned with intricately molded clay clothing and jewelry. Most figurines were left unpainted, but occasionally some were decorated with bright colors. Hundreds of years later, the remnants of red paint can still be seen on some of their faces and jewelry. This artifact was used to promote fertility among the ancients. Typically it was nightly placed atop the female womb with the requisite prayers and rituals. While broken from a larger piece. This artifact maintains the paint integrity and the remarkable detail of the Chupicuaro culture. On Aug-06-13 at 21:26:33 PDT. Seller added the following information: Posted with

Pre-Columbian Figural Vessel - Nayarit Culture / 200 BC - 250 AD/ Western Mexico
Pre-Columbian Mexican Sitting Figural Vessel Nayarit Culture. 250 BC- 200 AD ~ please scroll down for more photos ~ Pre-Columbian terra cotta figural vessel from Western Mexico. Nayarit Culture. 250 BC to 200 AD. SIZE: Height- 8.25" 12 cm) Width- 4.5" 11.5 cm) Depth- 3.5" 9 cm) An anthropomorphic male sitting figure. Leaning forward with his left hand holding an object in, or up to his mouth. His right hand is on his right knee. The figure has foreshortened legs, long curving arms of unequal length, a flattened face with a proportionate nose and coffee bean eyes. He is wearing multiple ear spools. This figure's head. Body, and legs are hollow and there is a large round opening at the top of his head, making the piece into a vessel as well as a figure. The figure's hair is cut into bangs across the forehead and the details ... moreof the hair were inscribed into the clay before firing. The neckline also has dimension and is raised up from the body. Depicting the figure to be wearing clothing. The surface of the figure is of the red burnished- polished clay and there are remnants of white and possibly black slip pigments painted on the face. There may have been yellowish designs on the chest. As well, but if so they hardly visible now. The surface shows dark dimensional manganese deposits in many areas. And some light encrustations of dirt and other substances in the crevices. This piece is between 1.800 and 2,250 years old. It was collected during the 1940's and was obtained from an old San Francisco collection. Condition: This piece is in good excavated condition with no losses. The following is noted: A tight. Stable, very thin hairline extending from the front of the figure's throat, over his right shoulder, to the back of his neck. It appears that there is a very old repair where the upper left part of the head has been glued back after a separation. A line showing this runs under his left eye, up the forehead and hair and down the back of his head and over the left ear(please see photos

ANCIENT Female WARRIOR Pre-Columbian Jalisco,Mexico 100 B.C.- 250 A.D ARTIFACT
This rare sculptural pottery female/mother figure measures approx 10" a tad under that) and approx 6" wide- from arm to arm. She weighs approx. 429.2 g or 15.140 oz. I feel she is in excellent vintage. Ancient condition with a"worm" hole in the back, a tiny shallow one on her chin and an intentional hole in front of her ear, which I believe might have once held an earring? On the back"heel" of her right foot there appears to be restoration to the pointed"heel" but she stands well and looks like a million bucks for her age! Please view all photos and ask questions and I will answer them as forthrightly as I am able. My guess is this tribal"mother"WARRIOR" figure represents the archetype or the ancestor or the fertility goddess of the culture. She has incredible features that depict royal"aztec" ... moreindian or mayan blood lines. Full breasts at shoulder level as a symbolic message- strength, stability, NURTURING power. All in all this is an excellent. Precious and ancient piece of Ancient History whether your interest lies in Latin American, South American, The Americas or Native American History! We ship globally.

It has oddly defined features which look much like those of the alien creatures often associated with the so-called flying saucer crash in"Area 51" in Nevada many years ago. Is it possible aliens from another world visited the Aztecs many years ago? Not likely, but I must admit this is one of the strangest clay figure heads I've handled in the past 60 years! I'll let the buyer be the judge. These heads were once on full human clay figures but were broken off and cast into the fields to ensure crop fertility. It's made of fired reddish/tan ... moreclay and in fair condition. My Feedback Profile and eBay preferred seller reputation attest to my integrity and honesty. The authenticity of my artifacts and relics is guaranteed for life, OR YOUR MONEY BACK! Buyer pays $3.00 S/H. Shipping charges to foreign buyers may be greater. No reserve. Good luck!

PRE-COLUMBIAN MEXICO ARTIFACT former MUSEUM CURATOR COLLECTION PIECE
Offered here is a nicely worked pre-columbian terra-cotta head figure. Prior to the Aztec empire's defeat by the Spanish there were a number of early cultures that occupied the region that we know as Mexico today. Matter of fact. Mexico leads the world in ruins of early cultures, over 11,000 archaeological sites have been discovered. Anything that relates to these early cultures is usually grouped under the general term, Pre-Columbian" before the discovery and conquest of the New World by the Spanish. The lives of these early Pre-Classic peoples were often dominated by the fertility cults and death rituals of the society. Remains of the these practices often involve bowls, jars and modelled figurines, in either anthromorphic or zoomorphic stylizations. The open-mouthed. Large earred head figure with headress, pictured here, was recovered ... morefrom one of the Pre-Classic States such as; Nayarit, Jalisco, Colima, or Michoaca that was found along Mexico's Pacific Coast. The cultures that existed in those specific regions date roughly from 200 B.C. to 400 A.D. This recovered piece was secured in a licensed archaeological expedition and belonged to a former museum curator. This human-styled head is genuine and authenticand in itself is roughly 2000 years old and measures approximately 2 inches x 3 inches x 1 inch at thickest. There are no repairs to the figurine and is in its"as found" Less light cleaning, condition. The large earred figure with headress was made of fired reddish/tan clay which is quite stable, considering the age of the object. Heads were commonly boken from the body during a ritual. Its in very good condition and displays well. This authentic Pre-Columbian head figure was purchased at an auction in the late 1980s. The display stand is not part of the figurine sale. But may be purchased separately for an additional $9.95 Please look at the enlarged photos for close-up views of the Huastec Pre-Columbian pottery bowl. Pre Columbian Mexico Pre Classic Olmec Jade CELT
Pre Columbian Mexico Pre Classic Olmec Jade CELT Amazing large Pre Columbian celt This piece is unique since it has a very comfortable shape for the hand to grasp it. There is a rounded end and immediately below a depression that is perfectly ergonomic. An expert in Pre Columbian artifacts mentioned o us that he had never seen one that has the depression for the rope to attach this as an ax on a handle. I believe this depression is to fit comfortably onto a hand and prevent the tool from slipping off. The photos do not depict it clearly but it is smooth on the working end. The stone is light green possibly from the Guerrero area and may possibly be Mezcala. Shows age and mineral deposits. CHUPICUARO Pre-Columbian MEXICO head EFFIGY 400 BCE -100 BCE preHorizon FRAGMENT
This ancient antiquity is a Chupícuaro head fragment from a Chupícuaro fertility effigy. I bought this in San Miguel. Mexico( located in the far eastern part of the state of Guanajuato) at an estate sale in the early 1970s when I was living there during the summer. The effigy fragment still has remnants of red paint. The nose and mouth. And left side are broken off. It measures 1 ½ x 1 ¼ x ½ inch depth. Stand not included. There is also glue residue on the back as the fragment as it was once attached to a velvet backed display case. Chupícuaro(a pre-Horizon culture) fertility effigies were placed into the dirt by a Chupícuaro farmer during the planting season to appease the goods to insure a bountiful harvest. Subsequently. After centuries of being plowed or tilled over, the heads usually break off from ... morethe bodies. Chupícuaro Excerpt from Wikipedia. The free encyclopedia The Chupícuaro culture was located in the mountains of central Mexico and is named for the area in which the artifacts have been found. It is an important pre-Hispanic archeological site from the late pre-classical or formative period; located west of the Mexican Plateau. On the hills nearby the Lerma River and its tributary Coroneo or Tiger River; which currently under water because of the Solis dam. Just 7 kilometers from Acamaro in the Guanajuato State, near the Michoacán State border in Mexico Little is known about the history of this site. And it was not until 1946, due to a dam construction, that the first explorations were performed, discovering pottery objects and tombs. The place is currently below dam water, although there are surrounding areas still being explored. According to several sources. It is believed that this settlement developed between 500 BC and 300 AD, although some scientists suggest an older development, as far back as 800 BC. Establishing a firm chronology for Chupícuaro has been very problematic. Due to a lack of stratigraphic excavations and reliable C 14 dates.
Pre-Columbian MEXICO fertility EFFIGY head FRAGMENT
This ancient Pre-Columbian head is a fragment of a fertility effigy from Mexico. It was given to me by a friend who was the former assistant to Alfred Barr at the Modern Art Museum in NYC and was a former curator at the Ringling Museum of Art. The terracotta effigy fragment has a grey patina as it was on the surface of a planting field when the unknown tribe slashed and burned the field prior to replanting. It has an incised scratch on its cheek(I didn’t slash it) revealing its original terracotta clay body. It measures 1 ½ x 1 ¼ x 1 inch depth. Stand not included. FERTILITY HEAD/FEMALE FIGURE, CHUPICUARO PRE-COLUMBIAN, WESTERN MEXICO
FERTILITY HEAD/FEMALE FIGURE. CHUPICUARO PRE-COLUMBIAN. WESTERN MEXICO Length: 2 1/2" Width: 1 3/4" Thick: 1/2" Weight: 8 oz This Pre-Columbian Female Fertility Effigy comes from the Mexican state of Jalisco. Most figurines were left unpainted, but occasionally some were decorated ... morewith bright colors.

AUTHENTIC Lot PRE COLUMBIAN JALISCO Pottery Vase Bowl Platter Mexico NO RESERVE
I purchased a large lot of pottery in a high-end auction. And these three pieces of Pre-Columbian pottery were included in it. A very old auction label on the bottom of one of the pieces identifies these as Jalisco. The vase in this lot has red painted details and is 4.5 inches tall. With an opening at the top of 3.5 inches in diameter. It is a beautiful piece but does have a chip on the top rim, which is shown in photos. There are also two very old labels on the bottom, which can be removed by the buyer if desired. The small bowl here is 4.25 inches in diameter and 2 inches tall. It has beautiful firing marks. Although it too has chips, shown in photos. The large platter/bowl is 9.5 inches in diameter and 2 inches tall. Again. Nice firing marks and overall a great looking piece. I am not a collector of this specific type of pottery. So please ... moreemail me if you have any questions I have not answered here. I am happy to reply. Happy bidding!
