Pre-Columbian Figural Vessel - Nayarit Culture / 200 BC - 250 AD/ Western Mexico
Pre-Columbian Mexican Sitting Figural Vessel Nayarit Culture. 250 BC- 200 AD ~ please scroll down for more photos ~ Pre-Columbian terra cotta figural vessel from Western Mexico. Nayarit Culture. 250 BC to 200 AD. SIZE: Height- 8.25" 12 cm) Width- 4.5" 11.5 cm) Depth- 3.5" 9 cm) An anthropomorphic male sitting figure. Leaning forward with his left hand holding an object in, or up to his mouth. His right hand is on his right knee. The figure has foreshortened legs, long curving arms of unequal length, a flattened face with a proportionate nose and coffee bean eyes. He is wearing multiple ear spools. This figure's head. Body, and legs are hollow and there is a large round opening at the top of his head, making the piece into a vessel as well as a figure. The figure's hair is cut into bangs across the forehead and the details ... moreof the hair were inscribed into the clay before firing. The neckline also has dimension and is raised up from the body. Depicting the figure to be wearing clothing. The surface of the figure is of the red burnished- polished clay and there are remnants of white and possibly black slip pigments painted on the face. There may have been yellowish designs on the chest. As well, but if so they hardly visible now. The surface shows dark dimensional manganese deposits in many areas. And some light encrustations of dirt and other substances in the crevices. This piece is between 1.800 and 2,250 years old. It was collected during the 1940's and was obtained from an old San Francisco collection. Condition: This piece is in good excavated condition with no losses. The following is noted: A tight. Stable, very thin hairline extending from the front of the figure's throat, over his right shoulder, to the back of his neck. It appears that there is a very old repair where the upper left part of the head has been glued back after a separation. A line showing this runs under his left eye, up the forehead and hair and down the back of his head and over the left ear(please see photos

Ancient Pre - Columbian Chancay Culture Pottery Vessel - 1200 AD
A pre-Columbian(Chancay culture) earthenware bottle or jar. This ovoid vessel with a flaring neck and arched handles has two appliquéd pods attached to one of its handles. The cream slipped body is decorated with a series of vertical brown bands. Most Chancay vessels display an elementariness of form and the seemingly spontaneous application of painted decoration as shown in this piece. Little is known of the Chancay society. But evidence indicates that it represented a small regional state made up of several ethnic groups inhabiting the coasts, desert lands and valleys of central Peru between 1000-1435 A.D. The Chancay are best known for their astonishing and unique craftsmanship that valued a high level of personalisation in decorative style. Producing woodworks. Textiles and ceramics, Chancay style artefacts are prevalent across central ... morePeru. This enigmatic society traded their goods widely with other regions either by land towards the Peruvian highlands and jungle or by sea to the north and south of their borders. As such, though the society does not appear to have wielded significant political power, the skill of their craftsmen appears to have been respected and admired. The artisan who produced this piece would have been under the control of the local kuraka(clan leader) Who regulated the production activities of the various specialists, farmers and festive activities within his community. A beautiful and highly desirable piece of pre-Columbian art. Condition: Excellent. Some minor restoration to rim. Height: 10 1/2 inches. Exhibited: The City Art Centre. Edinburgh, Scotland August 15th, 1983- October 2nd, 1983. Bayley Art Museum. University of Virginia November 15th, 1983- January 15th, 1984. Published: Full page illustration and description in. PRE COLUMBIAN - MOCHE culture "DOUBLE FLYING BIRD" pendant, ca. 100 to 800 AD
A very neat looking pre-Spanish contact(pre-Columbian) stylized double sided flying bird pendant carved from orange spondylous shell. Sourced from coastal Peru, probably Moche culture dating from about 100 to 800 AD, but possibly Lambayeque or Sican, dating as late as 1400 AD. T he condition is mostly good. Showing great age and wear overall, about 19 mm(about 3/4 inch) wide, by about 19 mm tall, and 4 mm in thickness. The flat style pendant has a suspension hole on each side of the back that pierces the back near the corners and comes out through the narrow sides(so the suspension holes cannot be seen from the front) The holes are at the bottom sides of the bird. Expressiv pre columbian bottle Chavin Culture with T.L. test document!!!
It is always amazing with the craftsmanship skill and without a potter's wheel such an even and wonderful ceramics of the Chavin culture are made. The round container fits comfortably in your hand. It is massive, but is easy. The round pattern shapes act like female nipples; a smooth long spout with molded edge round off the very beautiful vessel. The exact interpretation of the bottle I like to leave it to you, because that is exactly the very interesting thing about this mystical grave goods. Age-related condition on the spout is a small repair to detect. On the ground, a professional restoration was carried out. Such a nice old piece should be in every good pre-Columbian collection. Michael Hough Collection, ex. Terry Baxter Collection. From About.com. The term Greater Nicoya defines a Pre-Columbian cultural area that comprised the regions of Guanacaste and Nicoya in the northwestern portion of the modern Latin American countries of Costa Rica and part of the Pacific region of Nicaragua. Archaeologically. This region is part of the Intermediate Area, so defined because of its intermediate position between the Mesoamerican and South American cultural areas. In the history of Pre-Columbian archaeology. In fact, the cultural development of this region has often been treated as secondary or strictly linked to the development of"higher" civilizations of Mesoamerica or South America, rather than acknowledging an independent florescence. Ancient Pre - Columbian Chancay Culture Pottery Llama Vessel - 1200 AD
A published and exhibited pre-Columbian(Chancay culture) earthenware figure in the form of a llama. Dating to 1000- 1435 A.D. This hollow figure of a llama stands on four stubby legs. With the large egg shaped body acting as a humorous counterpoint to the undersized head. The doe eyed facial expression conveys a sense of almost child-like naivety, the ears have been pierced and would likely have been further decorated in antiquity. Most Chancay vessels display an elementariness of form and the seemingly spontaneous application of painted decoration as shown in this piece. Though its specific purpose is now a mystery. It is possible that such vessels were made as toys for children. Little is known of the Chancay society. But evidence indicates that it represented a small regional state made up of several ethnic groups inhabiting the coasts, ... moredesert lands and valleys of central Peru between 1000-1435 A.D. The Chancay are best known for their astonishing and unique craftsmanship that valued a high level of personalisation in decorative style. Producing woodworks. Textiles and ceramics, Chancay style artefacts are prevalent across central Peru. A charming piece of pre-Columbian art. Condition: Very good. Some minor restoration to right hind quarter. It has been perforated in the middle of the back during antiquity. This piece bears its original inventory sticker on the base. Length: 14 1/4 inches. Exhibited: The City Art Centre. Edinburgh, Scotland August 15th,

Pre Columbian Hohokam culture 2 Stone Palettes Sacaton Phase 950 - 1125 AD
Hi! Up for auction are two ancient Hohokam culture Sedentary Period Sacaton Phase Stone Palettes from the Phoenix Basin region. They are dated from 950 to 1125 AD. From the pictures. These two ancient Hohokam culture Stone Palettes were made of slate and have raised borders consisting of opposing crosshatched triangles. These two palettes were found containing traces of red, white, and green paint pigments. The red pigment is lead slag encrustations. It was likely lead carbonate and when burned glowed a strong red color(Hawly in Gladwin& others, 1965;282-289) The green glaze pigment patches are copper ore. Provenance: These Hohokam culture Sedentary Period Sacaton Phase Stone Palettes were found in a ruin along the Gila River in Florence. Arizona, USA. In the early 1960s, they were collected on a privately owned farm by an Arizonan artifact ... morecollector with permission from the landowner. Therefore. These artifacts are perfectly legal to buy and sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600. CHAPTER 14. Background History: During the Colonial and Sedentary Period. Many palettes were quite well shaped, exquisitely carved, and may have not been used to mix paint at all. Many palettes may have been used to grind hallucinogenic plants(Lowell 1990, White 2004) Most palettes easily fit in ones hand being rectangular in shape. Most measure between four to eight inches in length. However they were made in a wide range of sizes. Palettes are usually made of slate or slate-like schist. Earlier and later undecorated ones were usually made of harder stone. Many have a slight basin in or near the center caused by grinding. Some have been found containing traces of red, white, and yellow paints, although palettes may have been used to grind organic material as well. Many have been found with patches of lead slag encrustations on the surfaces, some of these have small vitreous green glaze patches also. Most palettes were offerings used in cremation ceremonies. But many were not. Palettes may have been use
