Precolumbian #72, red, bliss, baby face, Vera Cruz, Mexico, 1,000-2,000 yrs old
1) Precolumbian. Sculpted, ceramic head; most likely 1,000 to 2,000 years old. 2) Dimensions. 5" high. 3) Medium. clay. Hard fired under great heat. 4) Provenance. I collected precolumbian sculpture from 1965 through 1967 in Mexico when I was a teenager and- from 1966 through'67- as an anthropology student at the Universidad de las Americas in Mexico City. I did not find this one myself. I bought it in a Mexican archaeological zone(when it was legal to do so) I don't have a specific recollection of where this is from. 72. Red, bliss, baby face, typical of Vera Cruz, Gulf Coast. Some people wonder if these blissful faces are people on drugs. I don't know. But I think the genre is appealing. How to distinguish an authentic precolumbian sculpture from a fake: a) provinance; know the source; b) study precolumbian anthropology; ... moresee what's in the museums and the books; c) lick. Or otherwise wet, the object and see how long it takes to dry; ancient ceramics take a long time to dry because they are more porous than new ceramics. Photos show front and back of head. The back shows the felt pen mark I wrote on it when I acquired it in November 1967- 11/67"

Rare Vera Cruz pottery Head
8th Century Vera Cruz pottery head. Appraised by Pre-columbian expert with North Florida university. Purchased over 60 years ago in Mexico. Has small metal stand, has been missing one small ear which doesn't detract from the head's appearance, probably when it was purchased. Wonderful treasure for museum or antiquity collectors. Similar ones are in museum collections, and it's almost impossible to find an antiquity such as this other than from another collector. Large Precolumbian Vera Cruz Head ( 500 AD) 5" X 5"
Fine large Vera Cruz Head from a much larger Figure. Strong realistic features measuring approx. 5" X 5" circa 600-900 AD. Losses cracks and surface wear attest to its age. From an old NYC collection.
Pre-Columbian Vera Cruz Standing Figure Circa 600 A.D.
Vera Cruz figure depicting a warrior with helmet or ball player. This piece comes from the collection of deceased collector Ed Young who came to New Mexico in the 1940's after WWII and traveled frequently to Mexico during the 1950's and 60's when he collected pre-Columbian objects. This ceramic sculpture is in excellent condition but has a repair. See crack in neck area. There is still earth clinging to the sculpture but underneath in places can be seen a light colored slip and there is black pigment(probably chapopote) on the thighs and lower part of the face. The chapopote.Round nose ornament, treatment of arms and legs, and the way the appendages terminate suggest an early classic era Vera Cruz.

RARE Pre Columbian Vera Cruz dying Deity terracotta artifact art pottery COA
This is a rare and very unusual figural effigy of a Pre Columbian terracotta. Pottery dying deity figure lying on a bed with a blanket. It has also been described as a sleeping deity. In any event it is a real eye grabber. Figure much more realism based than a lot of Pre Columbian art complete with open mouth and teeth. Figure lying supine with legs up and either dying or sleeping. Head has holes through it but I don't know the meaning of this. He is not demanding and will not ask much attention. This really caught my eye and is a striking Vera Cruz artifact that will really be a conversation piece. I purchased it from Artemis Gallery and it comes with Certificate of Authenticity. Culture: Vera Cruz culture. Eastern Mexico. CA: 6-800AD. Size:10 inches long. 6 inches high, 4 inches wide. Provenance: ex Paul Punks collection. ex Arte Primitivo, ... moreex Artemis Gallery. Rare Pre-Columbian Wheeled Jaguar Effigy- Toy Vera Cruz- Mayan Classic to Late Post-Classic Period 250 AD-1200 AD ~ please scroll down for more photos and information ~ SIZE: Length- 4 1/2” 11 cm) Width- 2 1/4” 5.5 cm) Height- 2 5/8” 6.5 cm) DESCRIPTION: Very rare Pre-Columbian ceramic toy or effigy with four wheels in the form of a Jaguar. Late Classic or Post-Classic Mayan or Vera Cruz Culture- Circa 250 AD- 1200 AD. El Salvador or Mexico. A number of these wheeled pieces are known and are thought to date from the Classic to Late Post-Classic Mayan Period(250 AD- 1200 AD) Various attributions for similar objects are to the Olmec. Mayan, Toltec, and Vera Cruz cultures, so maybe they were made by a number of cultures. It seems that it is not known whether these wheeled pieces were made as children’s toys, ceremonial effigies, or had some ... moreother purpose. Probably ceremonial, possibly burial pieces. This piece is hand-made and has all four wheels. It is in the form of a jaguar. With a long tail, upright ears, a detailed face and an open mouth. The piece appears to have four original wheels, but the axles(sticks) have been replaced since the original wood would long ago have deteriorated. There are traces of red paint on the face. The surfaces show. In addition to some traces of paint, darkening, light encrustation, old wear to the rolling surfaces of the wheels, and an overall aged darkened patina. There are several archeological or collection markings to the underside of the jaguar. As you can see in the photographs. This piece was purchased at a Butterfield and Butterfield auction in San Francisco about 20 years ago and was part of an old collection being sold. I bought it from the purchaser shortly after he obtained it from the auction house. It has been in my own collection since 1994. An image search on google for“precolumbian toy” will bring up quite a bit of information about similar pieces. AGE: Circa 250 AD- 1200 AD. Mayan or Vera Cruz(probably) CONDITION: Good condition. As shown in
